Book excerpt: A high vacuum catalytic reactor was developed to measure the rates of catalytic and surface chemical processes occurring during the interaction between ethanol and atomically clean germanium and silicon surfaces as a function of temperature, pressure, controlled surface contamination, and bulk semiconductor doping. Germanium powders catalyzed the steady state dehydrogenation of ethanol, and the reaction rate was determined over a wide range of experimental conditions. Atomically clean germanium surfaces abstracted oxygen from ethanol producing ethylene, hydrogen, and a non-reducible surface oxide. The dehydrogenation activity of the germanium surfaces was independent of bulk doping over the entire range investigated. Ethanol was chemisorbed much more strongly by clean silicon surfaces than germanium. Silicon surfaces were oxygenated at temperatures above 300C, in a fashion similar to germanium, by ethanol; and they possessed no steady state dehydrogenation activity. The catalytic activity of the germanium surfaces was attributed to their ability to form covalent bonds with hydrogen.

Heating the CdS crystal in oxygen at 200C induces adsorption on the (0001) SPECULAR surface. The (0001) MATTE surface of a high purity CdS crystal was ex amined. The results for this crystal showed the presence of surface planes in agreement with the results for the same face of another CdS crystal whose purity was unknown. The (0001) MATTE surface of a high purity CdS crystal was prepared for examination without chemical etch and without exposure to temperatures higher than 400C. A weak diffraction pattern characteristic of diffraction from a (0001) plane and containing half integral as well as integral order beams in two major azimuths was obtained in agreement with the results for the (0001) SPECULAR surface. These results show that the chemical etch exposes the planes on the MATTE surface. Heating the crystal near 500C in a vacuum caused the appearance of planes as in the case of the chemical etch. Thus the plane on the MATTE surface is unstable under the conditions of chemical etch or heat treatment near 500C in a vacuum. (Author).

However, twelve chapters are essentially new, with the bulk of this work being devoted to important current topics which give this volume an almost encyclopaedic form. The first three chapters discuss various aspects of modern band theory and the next two analyze impurities in semiconductors. Then follow chapters on semiconductor statistics and on surfaces, interfaces and band offsets as they occur in heterojunctions. Chapters 8 to 19 report on newer topics (though a survey of transport properties of carriers is also included). Among these are transport of hot electrons, and thermoelectric effects including here and elsewhere properties of low-dimensional and mesoscopic structures. The electron-hole liquid, the quantum Hall effect, localisation, ballistic transport, coherence in superlattices, current ideas on tunnelling and on quantum confinement and scattering processes are also covered.
