This is a unique poetic response by Jorie Graham illuminating the shrill quietness of Jeannette Montgomery Barron's photographs. Cavafy. Yeros has produced nearly seventy photographic illustrations using a mixture of models and fellow members of the artistic community such as Gore Vidal, Clive Barker, and Jeff Koons as his subjects. These striking images bring out every nuance of Cavafy’s writing—with romance, intrigue, humor, despair, and eroticism each playing a part. In addition to its visual richness, the book presents new English poetic translations of Cavafy by David Connolly (Eroticon, Journal of an Unseen April) which are faithful to the original Greek works while bringing them to life for a new group of readers. Stunning portraiture and erotic photography paired with new English translations of the poetry of C. P. Cavafy—called the greatest modern Mediterranean poet. Literary, artistic, celebrity and gay interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOUIS DIENES (1925-2016), poet and photographer, was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and, as a boy, moved with his family to Boston. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then New York University. In 1943 he began the study which, as he describes in this book, changed his life magnificently: the study of the philosophy Aesthetic Realism with its founder, the poet and critic Eli Siegel. Louis Dienes says that Black & White expresses, “along with my enthusiasm for photography, my gratitude to Eli Siegel for teaching me that poetry arises from the oneness of the permanent opposites in reality as seen by an individual.” Photographs by Louis Dienes have appeared in numerous group shows at the Terrain Gallery. In 1962 he had a one-person exhibition at the Terrain. And, with the Aesthetic Realism Photographers, his work was included in travelling exhibitions throughout the United States. As poet, he is a co-author of the landmark book Personal & Impersonal: Six Aesthetic Realists (Definition Press, 1959). And poems by him have been published in such journals as Black Mountain Review, Georgia Review, Pegasus, Midland Poetry Review and the New York Herald Tribune Poet’s Column. Louis Dienes often spoke about how much he learned as he continued to attend classes in poetry and in the relation of art and life, conducted by the Aesthetic Realism Chairman of Education, Ellen Reiss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominee for the 2021 NAACP Image Award in Poetry An elegiac and moving meditation on the ways in which we witness "bodies" of grief and healing. Poems and photographs collide in this intimate collection, challenging the invisible, indefinable ways mourning takes up residence in a body, both before and after life-altering loss. In radiant poems—set against the evocative and desperate backdrop of contemporary events, pop culture, and politics—Rachel Eliza Griffiths reckons with her mother’s death, aging, authority, art, black womanhood, memory, and the American imagination. The poems take shape in the space where public and private mourning converge, finding there magic and music alongside brutality and trauma. Griffiths braids a moving narrative of identity and its possibilities for rebirth through image and through loss. A photographer as well as a poet, Griffiths accompanies the fierce rhythm of her verses with a series of ghostly, imaginative self-portraits, blurring the body’s internal wilderness with landscapes alive with beauty and terror. The collision of text and imagery offers an associative autobiography, in which narratives of language, absence, and presence are at once saved, revised, and often erased. Seeing the Body dismantles personal and public masks of silence and self-destruction to visualize and celebrate the imperfect freedom of radical self-love.

Book excerpt: Now more than ever, we must take advantage of students' increasing fascination with graphic images as opposed to written words. Reflect and Write capitalizes on this situation by marrying dynamic images to original poems written by students at the junior and senior high school levels, teachers, and other writers nationwide. Additionally, each page contains keywords, as well as popular quotations by well-known authors, designed to inspire critical thinking. Taken together, the more than 300 poems, photographs, and quotations will help stimulate spirited class discussion and provide prompts that will evoke meaningful writing by students. Like Kellner's previous best-selling book, Write What You See, Reflect and Write will encourage students to read, relate to, and respond to modern verse and inspiring photographs both verbally and in writing. The book includes online access to the photographs and student pages. Grades 7-12
