Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism "A philosophical system": That sounds audacious enough in days when we are being constantly told that philosophers have ceased to frame systems, and now merely write essays. No further back than 1900, Sidgwick wrote that "the philosophic mind of the modern world is now at the ebb, with its constructive impulses comparatively feeble" (Mind, 1900). Doubtless he was thinking mainly of metaphysical construction, of which he had at another time said that system-making is pre-eminently the affair of philosophy (Mind, 1895). But, even as to "system," it is possible to do a bold thing in a modest spirit. I have called my "Theistic Idealism" a "system" because it is, as far as may be, concerned with, and drawn from, the system of things, rather than from the systems of the Schools. To all of these latter I am yet debtor, and like Gods people when they spoilt the Egyptians, I have not hesitated to lay violent hands - but more frequently critical hands - on what is valuable in any of them that incidentally chanced to lie in the line of my thought-aims and purpose. But this without savour of anything resembling eclecticism, or the admission of heterogeneous elements into the synthesis. I share the modern aversion to the word "system," but so long as thought remains orderly and systematic, system is necessary, and need convey no outworn suggestions of finality. The best-known forms of idealism in Western philosophy are Berkeleyan idealism, which gives ontological priority to the mental (minds and ideas) over the physical (bodies), and Kantian idealism, which gives a kind of explanatory priority to the mental (the structure of the understanding) over the physical (the structure of the empirical world). Although idealism was once a dominant view in Western philosophy, it has suffered almost total neglect over the last several decades. But it has, at the same time, an ulterior and higher value than that of a volume of detached essays. For, in its choice of subjects, it has been designed and purposed to serve as a supplementary volume to my recent large work, entitled ' A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism.' All the subjects dealt with in the present volume were touched upon in that work, but, because I could not, without serious disproportion, give them in that work, "elaborate" as it was said to be, the extended treatment which I desired, I have provided this in the present volume. This enhances the value of the present work, by placing the contents of its chapters in a systematic relation and connection. It, at the same time, extends the range and widens the usefulness of the larger work, which it so supplements. This to me is important, for, however some philosophers may choose to entertain indifference as to the value of system, that appears to me no high or satisfying philosophic plane in which the mind is content to be the abode of merely individual, sporadic, and unrelated problems. There is no lack of philosophical variety in the work. Epistemology, Ontology and Metaphysics, and Ethics, are all represented in its chapters, in whose discussions Psychology and Logic also find frequent place. The chapters on "The Character of Cognitive Acts," "Philosophy and Faith," and "The Phenomenology of Pain" appear for the first time. My best thanks are tendered to Mrs Paul Cams for cordial permission to republish the chapters on "The Greatest Problem in Value," and on "Rationalism and Voluntarism," which appeared in "The Monist"; to Dr. Silas M'Bee, editor of 'The Constructive Quarterly,' New York, from which journal the chapters on "The Ontological Consciousness" and "The Unity of God and Man" are reprinted; and to Professor James H.
