Download or read book Geochemistry of Some Quaternary Lavas from the Aleutian Arc and Mt. Wrangell written by Christopher Nye and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication contains previously unpublished geochemical analyses or re-analyses of lavas, magmatic inclusions, and a few gabbroic cumulate inclusions from Alaska volcanoes (Akutan, Augustine, Buzzard Creek, Dana, Douglas, Fourpeaked, Frosty, Great Sitkin, Iliamna, Kaguyak, Kiska, Okmok, Prindle Cone, Recheshnoi, Redoubt, Spurr, Ukinrek Maars, Vsevidof, Westdahl, Wrangell) collected by the authors and others over the past 35 years. It provides substantial data sets for three volcanoes (Vsevidof, Westdahl, and Douglas) for which little or no published data exist. All analyses were made by the GeoAnalytical laboratory at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. The ICP/MS data have been reduced using the 2006 calibration to ensure internal consistency of the data set despite the twenty-year span over which the analyses were made.
Book Synopsis Geology of Volcanic Rocks in the South Half of the Ishpeming Greenstone Belt, Michigan by : Theodore J. Bornhorst
Download or read book Geology of Volcanic Rocks in the South Half of the Ishpeming Greenstone Belt, Michigan written by Theodore J. Bornhorst and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The south half of the Ishpeming greenstone belt is domi- nated by a thick succession of subaqueously erupted volcanic rocks. A regional structural interpretation of the belt provides a framework for placing this succession in a stratigraphic order. The south half of the Ishpeming greenstone belt preserves the remnants of overlapping subaqueous volcanic complexes within an arc system. The Kitchi Formation, as redefined herein, comprises the lower half of the volcanic succession and is subdivided into three informal units. The basal basalt flow unit is composed of pillowed, tholeiitic, basalt flows and minor banded iron-formation and dacitic tuff. It is overlain by the second and third units, which are tuff and lahar (volcanic debris flow) units that inter- finger with one another. These units range in composition from calc-alkalic basalt to dacite. The Kitchi Formation represents an evolving tholeiitic, mafic shield to calc-alkalic, mafic to felsic subaqueous volcano. The Mona Formation, which is redefined herein, is in structural contact with the Kitchi Formation, but is likely younger. It is subdivided into three informal units. The base consists of a basalt flow unit, which is composed of pillowed, tholeiitic to magnesium-rich basalt flows and minor amounts of banded iron-formation and tuff. The basalt is overlain by a calc-alkalic dacite to rhyolite lapilli-tuff unit and a laterally continuous upper tuff unit of calc-alkalic basalt to andesite. The Mona Formation represents an evolving tholeiitic, mafic shield to mafic-felsic calc-alkalic, mafic to felsic subaqueous volcano. The Deer Lake Peridotite, an ultramafic sill complex that intrudes the Kitchi Formation, is speculatively interpreted as a subvolcanic ultramafic komatiite base of the Mona Formation.

Book Synopsis Petrologic and Geochemical Tracers of Magmatic Movement in Volcanic Arc Systems by : Owen Kelly Neill
Download or read book Petrologic and Geochemical Tracers of Magmatic Movement in Volcanic Arc Systems written by Owen Kelly Neill and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing, crystallization and degassing commonly affect magmas during storage, ascent and eruption from volcanoes. As these interactions cannot be observed directly, they must be characterized using chemical signatures of volcanic eruptive products. In this dissertation, geochemical tracers of magma mixing, crystallization and degassing were employed to investigate the magmatic systems of Kasatochi Island volcano, central Aleutian Islands, and Bezymianny Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, in three studies. The purpose of the first study was to characterize eruptive products from the 2008 eruption of Kasatochi Island volcano. This eruption produced pumiceous, medium-K andesite, as well as denser, medium-K basaltic andesite, with variable bulk compositions (~52-56 wt. %SiO2 for the basaltic andesite, ~58-62 wt. % SiO2 for the andesite). The basaltic andesite and andesite must have resided in separate storage areas until just prior to eruption, with mixing between these magmas limited to just prior to eruption. The second study focused on basaltic andesite from the 2008 Kasatochi eruption, which contains two plagioclase phenocryst populations and anomalously calcic plagioclase microlites. Compositional heterogeneity in the basaltic andesite resulted from pre-eruptive mixing between mafic and silicic compositional end members. As the calcic plagioclase phenocrysts and microlites are out of equilibrium with groundmass glass, these phenocrysts and microlites likely crystallized mostly in the hotter (900-1000 °C) mafic mixing end member, while more sodic phenocrysts crystallized in the cooler (800-950 °C) felsic end member. Mixing between the silicic and mafic end members imposed an undercooling on the mafic magma, triggering plagioclase microlite nucleation in these more calcic liquids. The purpose of the final study was to investigate magmatic evolution of Bezymianny Volcano in Kamchatka, Russia through analyses of major, trace and volatile element compositions of melt inclusions. Inclusions dominantly record pressures of inclusion entrapment

Book Synopsis Petrology and Geochemistry of the Lazufre Volcanic Complex by : Alicia Diane Wilder
Download or read book Petrology and Geochemistry of the Lazufre Volcanic Complex written by Alicia Diane Wilder and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lazufre volcanic complex is an area of active surface uplift (~25°14'S) situated between two potentially active Quaternary volcanic centers, Lastarria and Cordon del Azufre, in the Andean Central Volcanic Zone. Studies incorporated geologic field relationships, mineral compositions, textures, and whole rock geochemical and isotopic data to develop a petrogenetic model to identify the source area and petrogenetic processes for the Lazufre magmatic system. Whole rock K-Ar dates of lavas from Cordon del Azufre place the most recent eruptions at 0.6-0.3 Ma + or = 0.3 Ma. The most recent eruptive activity at Lastarria has been dated at ~0.5-0.1 Ma. Volcanic rocks erupted from Lazufre are andesites to dacites and conform to a medium- to high-K calc-alkaline suite. Typical phenocryst assemblage is plagioclase-orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-amphibole. Magmatic inclusions and mafic glomerocryst are present in most lava flow samples. Plagioclase and pyroxene phenocrysts in all rocks exhibit textures consistent with thermal disequilibrium. Important geochemical characteristics of these rocks include negative correlations for Mg, Fe, Ca and increased K and Na with increasing SiO 2 suggesting limited crystal fractionation. High Cr and Ni in some of the more mafic samples indicate mingling of a more mafic magma with a large volume of more silicic magma. Large ion lithophile elements are elevated at higher SiO 2 content, suggesting assimilation of more felsic rocks. A low range in 206 Pb/204 Pb, 87 Sr/86 Sr, and 143 Nd/144 Nd suggest partial melting of lower mafic crust as the dominant process in the generation of Lazufre extrusive rocks and indicate that there was relatively little involvement of ancient or felsic continental crust in magmagenesis of the area. The original magma was modified by homogenization and small degrees of mixing and assimilation and fractional crystallization during differentiation through ascent of the mid and upper crust. The results from this study are significant in that a multitude of differentiation processes and magma sources, specifically, a considerable mafic lower crustal component were involved in the generation of Lazufre Volcanic Complex magmas in the Andean Central Volcanic Zone.
