Book excerpt: All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, 'Oh, why can't you remain like this for ever!' This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end. Of course they lived at 14, and until Wendy came her mother was the chief one. She was a lovely lady, with a romantic mind and such a sweet mocking mouth. Her romantic mind was like the tiny boxes, one within the other, that come from the puzzling East, however many you discover there is always one more; and her sweet mocking mouth had one kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectly conspicuous in the right-hand corner.

Barrie, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel.Although the character appeared previously in Barrie's book the small White Bird, the play and its novelisation contain the story of Peter Pan mythos that's best known. the 2 versions differ in some details of the story, but have much in common. In both versions Peter makes night-time calls on the Darlings' house in Bloomsbury, [4] listening in on Mrs. Mary Darling's bedtime stories by the open window. One night Peter is spotted and, while trying to flee, he loses his shadow. On returning to say it, Peter wakes Mary's daughter, Wendy Darling. Wendy succeeds in re-attaching his shadow to him, and Peter learns that she knows many bedtime stories. He invites her to Neverland to be a mother to his gang, the Lost Boys, children who were lost in Kensington Gardens. Wendy agrees, and her brothers John and Michael go along.Their magical flight to Neverland is followed by many adventures. the youngsters are blown out of the air by a cannon and Wendy is almost killed by the Lost Boy Tootles. Peter and therefore the Lost Boys build a touch house for Wendy to measure in while she recuperates (a sort of structure that to the present day is named a Wendy house). Soon John and Michael adopt the ways of the Lost Boys.Illustration by F. D. Bedford from the primary editionPeter welcomes Wendy to his underground home, and she or he immediately assumes the role of woman . Peter takes the Darlings on several adventures, the primary truly dangerous one occurring at Mermaids' Lagoon. At Mermaids' Lagoon, Peter and therefore the Lost Boys save the princess Tiger Lily and get entangled during a battle with the pirates, including the evil Captain Hook. Hook is Peter's nemesis who is hunted by a crocodile which bit off his left and needs to eat the remainder of him. he's named after the hook that replaced his missing hand. The crocodile also swallowed a ticking clock, so Hook is scared of all ticking sounds. Peter is wounded when Hook claws him. He believes he will die, stranded on a rock when the tide is rising, but he views death as "an awfully big adventure". Luckily, a bird allows him to use her nest as a ship, and Peter sails home.In gratitude for his saving Tiger Lily, her tribe guard his home from subsequent imminent pirate attack. Meanwhile, Wendy begins to fall crazy with Peter and asks him what quite feelings he has for her. Peter says that he's like her faithful son. at some point while telling stories to the Lost Boys and her brothers, John and Michael, Wendy recalls her parents then decides to require them back and return to England. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to Peter, Wendy and therefore the boys are captured by Captain Hook, who also tries to poison Peter's medicine while the boy is asleep. When Peter awakes, he learns from the fairy Tinker Bell that Wendy has been kidnapped - in an attempt to please Wendy, he goes to drink his medicine. Tink doesn't have time to warn him of the poison, and instead drinks it herself, causing her near death. Tink tells him she might be saved if children believed in fairies. In one among the play's most famous moments, Peter turns to the audience watching the play and begs those that believe fairies to clap their hands.

Barrie's classic work Peter Pan (1904) tells the story of the Darling children's journey to the magical islands of Neverland with Peter Pan, an adventurous young boy who refuses to grow up. The omniscient narrator--who addresses the audience in the first person--introduces the Darling family, which includes Mr. and Mrs. Darling; their three children, Wendy, John, and Michael; and a dog named Nana. The family resides in London, where the children share a nursery. In the present, Wendy tells Mrs. Darling about a boy named Peter Pan, who visits her dreams from a place called Neverland. After the children go to sleep, Peter Pan unexpectedly enters through their bedroom window, startling Mrs. Darling. When Mr. and Mrs. Darling leave the house to attend a nearby dinner party, Peter returns with his fairy, Tinker Bell. Wendy awakes and helps Peter attach his shadow to his body. Peter tells Wendy that he has no parents and that he refuses to ever become an adult; he lives in Neverland with a group of abandoned children who refer to themselves as "the lost boys." Intrigued with Neverland, Wendy asks him about fairies, which reminds Peter that he accidentally trapped Tinker Bell inside a closed drawer. The play Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up was first produced in December 1904, with Gerald du Maurier--Sylvia's brother and the father of writer Daphne du Maurier--playing both Mr. Darling, the father of the children spirited away by Peter Pan, and Captain Hook, the villainous pirate whom Peter defeats. That play added a new character to the mythology of the English-speaking world in the figure of Peter Pan, the eternal boy. Though the popular conception of the character is that of a charmingly impish figure, bent more on adventure and escaping the tedium of adulthood than anything truly sinister, the Peter of the play and books is anarchical, selfish, and murderous. For example, he kills his compatriots "the Lost Boys" when they show signs of maturing. Notes by Barrie indicate that Peter was in fact intended to be the true villain of the story. The scene in the play introducing Captain Hook was included only as a means of filling the time needed for a set change. The iconic buccaneer was retained in the 1911 novelization of the play, Peter and Wendy. Most of Barrie's stage triumphs have been dismissed by critics as marred by ephemeral whimsicalities, but at least six of his plays--Quality Street (1901), The Admirable Crichton (1902), What Every Woman Knows (1908), The Twelve-Pound Look (1910), The Will (1913), and Dear Brutus (1917)--are of indisputably high quality. Barrie idealized childhood and desexualized femininity but took a disenchanted view of adult life, as reflected in the gentle melancholy of those works. Sometimes he expressed his disenchantment humorously, as in The Admirable Crichton, in which a butler becomes the king of a desert island, with his former employers as serfs; sometimes satirically, as in The Twelve-Pound Look; and sometimes tragically, as in Dear Brutus, in which nine men and women whose lives have come to grief are given a magical second chance, only to wreck themselves again on the reefs of their own temperaments. The elaborate stage directions in Barrie's plays are sometimes more rewarding than their dialogue itself. Barrie proved himself a master of stage effects and of the delineation of character, but the sentimental and whimsical elements in his work have discouraged frequent revivals.Barrie was created a baronet in 1913 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1922. He became president of the Society of Authors in 1928 and chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in 1930.

Peter then blows fairy dust on the three Darling children, and they start flying across the room. Meanwhile, Nana broke into the Darlings' dinner to warn the parents that something is happening with the children, but before the parents arrive at the nursery, the children have already flown with Peter and Tinker Bell out the window and into the stars. The Darling children, flying over Neverland, find familiar landmarks from their dreams. However, as they prepare to land, the sky darkens; Peter warns them of the pirates on the island, explaining that he is responsible for the loss of Captain James Hook's right hand, having thrown it at the crocodile that ate it. Soon after, the pirates fire a cannon into the sky. John and Michael land in a different area than Wendy and Tinker Bell, and Peter is nowhere to be found. The narrator introduces the lost children, the rest of the pirates, and the Redskins. Together with Peter, the lost boys live in an underground house. When Wendy and Tinker Bell arrive, the boys initially mistake Wendy for a bird, and one of them, Tootles, shoots her with an arrow, just before Peter arrives. Luckily, Wendy survives and is soon reunited with her siblings, but is still unconscious. Afterward, Peter insists that they build Wendy a house. Once finished, the children knock on Wendy's new door and she invites them to read Cinderella. Peter and the children convince Wendy to be their mother. Overtime, which is difficult to calculate in Neverland, Wendy, John and Michael get used to living with lost children. As Wendy watches over the children, she worries when John and Michael seem to forget their parents. However, Wendy is confident that her mother has left the window open for her and her siblings to return. The group decides to visit the Laguna de las Sirenas to live an adventure. While there, two of Hook's companions, Smee and Starkey, arrive at the lagoon, with ...
