Book Synopsis What is Digital Journalism Studies? by : Steen Steensen
Download or read book What is Digital Journalism Studies? written by Steen Steensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Digital Journalism Studies? delves into the technologies, platforms, and audience relations that constitute digital journalism studies’ central objects of study, outlining its principal theories, the research methods being developed, its normative underpinnings, and possible futures for the academic field. The book argues that digital journalism studies is much more than the study of journalism produced, distributed, and consumed with the aid of digital technologies. Rather, the scholarly field of digital journalism studies is built on questions that disrupt much of what previously was taken for granted concerning media, journalism, and public spheres, asking questions like: What is a news organisation? To what degree has news become separated from journalism? What roles do platform companies and emerging technologies play in the production, distribution, and consumption of news and journalism? The book reviews the research into these questions and argues that digital journalism studies constitutes a cross-disciplinary field that does not focus on journalism solely from the traditions of journalism studies, but is open to research from and conversations with related fields. This is a timely overview of an increasingly prominent field of media studies that will be of particular interest to academics, researchers, and students of journalism and communication.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symbols, signs, and traces of copyright and related intellectual property laws that appear on everyday texts, objects, and artifacts have multiplied exponentially over the past 15 years. Digital spaces have revolutionized access to content and transformed the ways in which content is porous and malleable. In this volume, contributors focus on copyright as it relates to culture. The editors argue that what «counts» as property must be understood as shifting terrain deeply influenced by historical, economic, cultural, religious, and digital perspectives. Key themes addressed include issues of how: - Culture is framed, defined, and/or identified in conversations about intellectual property; - The humanities and other related disciplines are implicated in intellectual property issues; - The humanities will continue to rub up against copyright (e.g., issues of authorship, authorial agency, ownership of texts); - Different cultures and bodies of literature approach intellectual property, and how competing dynasties and marginalized voices exist beyond the dominant U.S. copyright paradigm. Offering a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective, Cultures of Copyright offers readers - scholars, researchers, practitioners, theorists, and others - key considerations to contemplate in terms of how we understand copyright's past and how we chart its futures.
Book Synopsis Dictators and Democrats by : Stephan Haggard
Download or read book Dictators and Democrats written by Stephan Haggard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous and comprehensive account of recent democratic transitions around the world From the 1980s through the first decade of the twenty-first century, the spread of democracy across the developing and post-Communist worlds transformed the global political landscape. What drove these changes and what determined whether the emerging democracies would stabilize or revert to authoritarian rule? Dictators and Democrats takes a comprehensive look at the transitions to and from democracy in recent decades. Deploying both statistical and qualitative analysis, Stephen Haggard and Robert Kaufman engage with theories of democratic change and advocate approaches that emphasize political and institutional factors. While inequality has been a prominent explanation for democratic transitions, the authors argue that its role has been limited, and elites as well as masses can drive regime change. Examining seventy-eight cases of democratic transition and twenty-five reversions since 1980, Haggard and Kaufman show how differences in authoritarian regimes and organizational capabilities shape popular protest and elite initiatives in transitions to democracy, and how institutional weaknesses cause some democracies to fail. The determinants of democracy lie in the strength of existing institutions and the public's capacity to engage in collective action. There are multiple routes to democracy, but those growing out of mass mobilization may provide more checks on incumbents than those emerging from intra-elite bargains. Moving beyond well-known beliefs regarding regime changes, Dictators and Democrats explores the conditions under which transitions to democracy are likely to arise.

Book Synopsis The Journalism Behind Journalism by : Gina Baleria
Download or read book The Journalism Behind Journalism written by Gina Baleria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s journalists need to know both the skills of how to write, interview, and research, as well as skills that are often thought of as more intangible. This book provides a practical, how-to approach for developing, honing, and practicing the intangible skills critical to strong journalism. Individual chapters introduce journalism’s intangible concepts such as curiosity, empathy, implicit bias, community engagement, and tenacity, relating them to solid journalistic practice through real-world examples. Case studies and interviews with industry professionals help to further establish connections between concept and practice, and mid-chapter and end-of-chapter exercises give the reader a concrete pathway toward developing these skills. The book offers an important perspective for the modern media landscape, where any journalist seeking to make an impact must know how to contextualize events, hold power to account, and inform their community to contribute to a healthy democracy. This is an invaluable text for courses in journalism skills at both the undergraduate and graduate level and anyone training the next generation of journalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, avant-garde artists from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean created extraordinary and highly innovative paintings, sculptures, assemblages, mixed-media works, and installations. This innovative book presents more than 250 works by some seventy of these artists (including Gego, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Xul Solar, and Jose Clemente Orozco) and artists' groups, along with interpretive essays by leading authorities and newly translated manifestoes and other theoretical documents written by the artists. Together the images and texts showcase the astonishing artistic achievements of the Latin American avant-garde. The book focuses on two decisive periods: the return from Europe in the 1920s of Latin American avant-garde pioneers; and the expansion of avant-garde activities throughout Latin America after World War II as artists expressed their independence from developments in Europe and the United States. As the authors explain, during these periods Latin American art was fueled by the belief that artistic creations could present a form of utopia - an inversion of the original premise that drove the European avant-garde - and serve as a model for
Book Synopsis The Poisoned Water by : Fernando Benítez
Download or read book The Poisoned Water written by Fernando Benítez and published by Carbondale : Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first English translation makes available to English-speaking readers a powerful modern Mexican novel, first published in 1961. Fernando Benítez, well-known Mexican author, journalist, and winner of Mexico's 1968 best-book award, exploits a true but little-known incident by building it into a tightly structured, tense, and tragic novel of social protest. The incident on which the novel is based is a bloody rebellion against the village feudal master touched off by joking comment on the "poisoning" of the water as one of Don Ulises's men is pushed into the plaza fountain. Feeding on itself, the rumor spreads that the "boss" has poisoned the local spring, and rebellion follows, with its violent and unforeseen consequences. The result is a frightening look at one of Mexico's major social problems and glaring ironies--that over fifty years after a revolution fought by the peasant and for the peasant, most rural groups are still living below the national economic standard.
