Book Synopsis Understanding by Design by : Grant P. Wiggins
Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Synopsis Competency in Teaching by : Eric N. Tuxworth
Download or read book Competency in Teaching written by Eric N. Tuxworth and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, the author reviews the actual and potential use of competence and performance based teacher education (C/PBTE) in regard to further education in England. He describes the concept of further education, reviews existing practices, and makes a number of suggestions for future action. The author first outlines the development and use of this individualized modular system in the United States and then analyzes the arguments for and against such a behaviorist approach to teacher skills. He claims that while much work is needed in adapting this system to the English system, experience elsewhere indicates the C/PBTE removes "some of the mystique and institutional restrictions which surround teacher education." The author notes that the development of these modules in the United States required an investment of $2 million and says that not all of the 100 modules available are relevant to the United Kingdom. He suggests, however, that various bodies, including the further education establishment, could valuably support developmental work based on the modular approach. (Two appendixes to the report describe the tentative approaches that have been made in the United Kingdom in this field, while other appendixes describe modules that are available and how they are used.) Book Synopsis Demand-Driven Approaches in Vocational Education and Training by : Muthuveeran Ramasamy
Download or read book Demand-Driven Approaches in Vocational Education and Training written by Muthuveeran Ramasamy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muthuveeran Ramasamy shows that the formal way of vocational education and training (VET) in rural areas often ignores the illiterate, the less educated, and the poor. The author demonstrates that VET programs need to be demand-driven and consider the socio-economic aspects of particular regions. Therefore, the significance of the study at grassroots level helps customize VET programs to respond to the demand of the individuals’ vocational training needs of rural people by keeping their endogenous needs at the centre of vocational skill development processes. The findings and lessons learnt from action research are also intensively discussed as guiding principles of demand-driven approaches from the learners’/societal perspectives.
