Book excerpt: This open access handbook, the first of its kind, provides a comprehensive and carefully curated multidisciplinary and genre-spanning view of the state of the field of Critical Menstruation Studies, opening up new directions in research and advocacy. It is animated by the central question: ‘“what new lines of inquiry are possible when we center our attention on menstrual health and politics across the life course?” The chapters—diverse in content, form and perspective—establish Critical Menstruation Studies as a potent lens that reveals, complicates and unpacks inequalities across biological, social, cultural and historical dimensions. This handbook is an unmatched resource for researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and activists new to and already familiar with the field as it rapidly develops and expands.

This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little has been written on the subject of old age in pre-industrial Europe and even less on old women. The topic of post-menopausal women in the Middle Ages has not received much attention in historical scholarship. Attitudes Toward Post-Menopausal Women in the High and Late Middle Ages, 1100-1400, examines didactic and prescriptive sources, literary sources, and evidence of lived lives in regard to post-menopausal women during the High and Late Middle Ages in England, France, Germany, the Low Countries, and Italy. It investigates some of the attitudes and perceptions held by medieval writers concerning post-menopausal women and whether their discourses reflected or diverged from how they actually lived their lives.

Download or read book Mastering Menopause written by Deborah M. Merrill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interviews with and case studies of women in the U.S., accompanied by research in this text, show how our perceptions, thoughts, and spiritual practices can help women through menopause without drugs and their potential side effects. More and more women today are seeking natural ways to cope with menopause, including through mindfulness techniques and Eastern practices such as meditation. Women of various races, ages, and socioeconomic status interviewed at length for this study explain their experiences, victories, and setbacks in their quests to overcome this natural but body- and brain-altering change. Complementing findings from her research with wider outside research, author Deborah Merrill explains how popular culture depictions, race, class, and education all alter women's perceptions of the meaning of menopause, and how those perceptions can complicate, exacerbate, or alleviate physical and psychological symptoms. She details the "medical view" that views menopause as a problem to be solved, rather than as a natural event. And, through women's words and case studies, she details psychospiritual approaches many are adopting to cope, instead of seeking potentially harmful medicines. Readers will find new insights, wisdom, and potential solutions in the array of voices, experiences, and paths taken and presented in this book.

Download or read book Assessing Symptom Perception and Management of Menopausal Symptoms in Middle-aged Women in a Faith-based Community written by Vivian L. Stamps and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common assumption that menopause is experienced by all women in the same way. However, factors such as ethnic and cultural differences, age, and personal beliefs influence the way an individual perceives and manage their menopausal symptoms. The purpose of the project was to assess symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women in a faith-based community. A descriptive research design was used to assess symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms among sixteen midlife women in a metropolitan church in the southeast. A thirty-six item questionnaire was used to measure the perceptions of the participants of their emotional and physical health. There appeared to be some correlation between age and symptom perception among the participants. There was no relationship between age, marital status, or education in regards to methods of treatment choice. Well-informed nurses have a greater advantage in preparing women during this major transitional period in their lives. Additional research on symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms in diverse groups of women is needed to provide holistic health care to all women.
