Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's involvement in sport has skyrocketed over the past thirty years, and the number of competitive elite female athletes is on the rise. Between 1972 and 1992, women's participation in the Olympic Games increased by 130 percent. The number of team sports offered for collegiate athletes has increased from slightly over 2 per school in 1972 to 8.32 teams in 2004. With this increase in the number of elite female athletes participating in sports it is important to explore what factors contribute to their talent development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the four factors of lived body, lived time, lived space and lived relations further by developing and administering a survey to elite female track and field athletes at the collegiate level. The study sought to reach a better understanding of how outside commitments, access to particular services/facilities and teammate roles affect athletic talent development. The survey instrument was drafted based on the conceptual foundations established in Burton's (2002) qualitative research, current literature on the topic and consultation of experts in the field. The survey instrument was tested for validity and reliability using a sample population of track and field athletes. The refined survey was distributed to elite female track and field athletes at twenty-six of the top Division I track and field programs. An elite level was assigned to each participant based on her track and field achievements. Based on the elite female track and field population in this sample, outside commitments do not have an effect on the athletes' development or performance. Access to facilities and services was important to all the athletes, regardless of elite level. Teammates were viewed as supporters, motivators and training partners by the athlete at all three elite levels, with the role of training partner considered to be the most important role. The small sample size made it difficult to complete in-depth statistical analy.

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate how intrapersonal and environmental factors shape the beliefs and experiences of talented athletes in Hong Kong, using a case study approach. The four participants involved in the study were elite athletes recognised for their outstanding sporting achievements. A literature review of previous studies suggested that genetic and environmental factors influence talent development in the sporting domain, with four key themes worthy of further investigation: self-perceptions of natural abilities in sport (talent), self-motivation, coach, and family and school. To achieve a deeper understanding of these variables, a qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews was used to examine the nature and complexity of the process of talent development. The results indicated that the participants did not tend to perceive themselves as significantly talented or "very special." However, there was evidence that the four factors identified above critically influenced the development of their talent, both positively and negatively. Based on the participants' stories, a conceptual framework was constructed to represent the interplay among the major influences on talent development. The findings have implications for improving or modifying the strategies commonly used to maximise talent development in elite athletes in Hong Kong. Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological interview study was to develop a deeper understanding of the perceptions of female basketball players of color regarding their head coaches' and assistant coaches' influence on their academic success. The conceptual framework that guided this investigation was Comeaux and Harrison's (2011) model of student athlete academic success. Findings from this study indicated that all 12 research participants believed it was important for coaches to have an impact on the academic success of their student athletes. However, regarding head coaches, they verbalized that this relationship only existed for a chosen few players. Far more often, assistant coaches played an important role in the players' academic development. Strategies identified by the participants to improve these relationships with head coaches included seeing the players as students first and athletes second, fostering a culture of academic success for all, applying group problem solving dynamics and requiring diversity training for coaches and athletic departments. Participants reported several challenges to developing relationships with their coaches that can enhance student athletes' academic success. These challenges included knowing who their players really are, including their strengths and weaknesses not just on the court, but in the classroom. This research also identified the need to improve the connection and cohesiveness among the players on the team to further foster a culture of academic success. Future research opportunities include exploring the perceptions of former male basketball players of color, and conducting a study comparing the perceptions of White former female basketball players as compared to those of former, female, basketball players of color. Where implemented, the recommendations identified in the current study about cultivating an environment of academic success should be further evaluated to determine their effectiveness.

Also, a grounded theory depicting the importance of a social support system in athletic talent development emerged. This study supported aspects of previous research, yet expanded it because of the materialization of the importance of overcoming adversity. Therefore, developing innate talent through critical social influences was central to overcome critical incidents in order to develop into a highly successful college athlete.

Book excerpt: This mixed method study explored student athletes' perception of parental influence in their high school athletic endeavours and how this perceived influence affected their self efficacy and academic success. The quantitative data was derived from surveys that gauged student perceived parental involvement, self efficacy and academic success in two high schools in a large metropolitan school district in British Columbia. One of the schools was a school composed primarily of students of mid to high social economic status while the other was designated an inner-city school. The qualitative focus group consisted 10 athletes from each of the schools - a male and female from each grade - discussing students' feelings about perceived parental involvement and how it affected their self-efficacy and academic success. The findings showed that all of the student athletes - regardless of which school they attended - perceived that their parents were involved in their high school athletic careers. This perceived parental influence did not, however, substantially influence their self-efficacy or academic success. Student athletes did feel increased membership when part of a high school athletic team and the interactions with their peer group and positive role models is linked to engagement in school, stronger feelings of self-worth, and academic success. This study showed that perceived parental influence, while likely a positive support for students, had very little effect on the students' perception about themselves or their academic success.
