Book excerpt: The fuzzy set was conceived as a result of an attempt to come to grips with the problem of pattern recognition in the context of imprecisely defined categories. In such cases, the belonging of an object to a class is a matter of degree, as is the question of whether or not a group of objects form a cluster. A pioneering application of the theory of fuzzy sets to cluster analysis was made in 1969 by Ruspini. It was not until 1973, however, when the appearance of the work by Dunn and Bezdek on the Fuzzy ISODATA (or fuzzy c-means) algorithms became a landmark in the theory of cluster analysis, that the relevance of the theory of fuzzy sets to cluster analysis and pattern recognition became clearly established. Since then, the theory of fuzzy clustering has developed rapidly and fruitfully, with the author of the present monograph contributing a major share of what we know today. In their seminal work, Bezdek and Dunn have introduced the basic idea of determining the fuzzy clusters by minimizing an appropriately defined functional, and have derived iterative algorithms for computing the membership functions for the clusters in question. The important issue of convergence of such algorithms has become much better understood as a result of recent work which is described in the monograph.

Book excerpt: There are many books on neural networks, some of which cover computational intelligence, but none that incorporate both feature extraction and computational intelligence, as Supervised and Unsupervised Pattern Recognition does. This volume describes the application of a novel, unsupervised pattern recognition scheme to the classification of various types of waveforms and images. This substantial collection of recent research begins with an introduction to Neural Networks, classifiers, and feature extraction methods. It then addresses unsupervised and fuzzy neural networks and their applications to handwritten character recognition and recognition of normal and abnormal visual evoked potentials. The third section deals with advanced neural network architectures-including modular design-and their applications to medicine and three-dimensional NN architecture simulating brain functions. The final section discusses general applications and simulations, such as the establishment of a brain-computer link, speaker identification, and face recognition. In the quickly changing field of computational intelligence, every discovery is significant. Supervised and Unsupervised Pattern Recognition gives you access to many notable findings in one convenient volume.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy set theory - and its underlying fuzzy logic - represents one of the most significant scientific and cultural paradigms to emerge in the last half-century. Its theoretical and technological promise is vast, and we are only beginning to experience its potential. Clustering is the first and most basic application of fuzzy set theory, but forms the basis of many, more sophisticated, intelligent computational models, particularly in pattern recognition, data mining, adaptive and hierarchical clustering, and classifier design. Fuzzy Sets and their Application to Clustering and Training offers a comprehensive introduction to fuzzy set theory, focusing on the concepts and results needed for training and clustering applications. It provides a unified mathematical framework for fuzzy classification and clustering, a methodology for developing training and classification methods, and a general method for obtaining a variety of fuzzy clustering algorithms. The authors - top experts from around the world - combine their talents to lay a solid foundation for applications of this powerful tool, from the basic concepts and mathematics through the study of various algorithms, to validity functionals and hierarchical clustering. The result is Fuzzy Sets and their Application to Clustering and Training - an outstanding initiation into the world of fuzzy learning classifiers and fuzzy clustering.

Book excerpt: The Soft Computing techniques, which are based on the information processing of biological systems are now massively used in the area of pattern recognition, making prediction & planning, as well as acting on the environment. Ideally speaking, soft computing is not a subject of homogeneous concepts and techniques; rather, it is an amalgamation of distinct methods that confirms to its guiding principle. At present, the main aim of soft computing is to exploit the tolerance for imprecision and uncertainty to achieve tractability, robustness and low solutions cost. The principal constituents of soft computing techniques are probabilistic reasoning, fuzzy logic, neuro-computing, genetic algorithms, belief networks, chaotic systems, as well as learning theory. This book covers contributions from various authors to demonstrate the use of soft computing techniques in various applications of engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 10th Int- national Conference on Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, Data Mining, and Granular Computing, RSFDGrC 2005, organized at the University of Regina, August 31st–September 3rd, 2005. This conference followed in the footsteps of inter- tional events devoted to the subject of rough sets, held so far in Canada, China, Japan,Poland,Sweden, and the USA. RSFDGrC achievedthe status of biennial international conference, starting from 2003 in Chongqing, China. The theory of rough sets, proposed by Zdzis law Pawlak in 1982, is a model of approximate reasoning. The main idea is based on indiscernibility relations that describe indistinguishability of objects. Concepts are represented by - proximations. In applications, rough set methodology focuses on approximate representation of knowledge derivable from data. It leads to signi?cant results in many areas such as ?nance, industry, multimedia, and medicine. The RSFDGrC conferences put an emphasis on connections between rough sets and fuzzy sets, granularcomputing, and knowledge discoveryand data m- ing, both at the level of theoretical foundations and real-life applications. In the case of this event, additional e?ort was made to establish a linkage towards a broader range of applications. We achieved it by including in the conference program the workshops on bioinformatics, security engineering, and embedded systems, as well as tutorials and sessions related to other application areas.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Fuzzy Pattern Recognition with Applications to Finance and Engineering focuses on fuzzy clustering methods which have proven to be very powerful in pattern recognition and considers the entire process of dynamic pattern recognition. This book sets a general framework for Dynamic Pattern Recognition, describing in detail the monitoring process using fuzzy tools and the adaptation process in which the classifiers have to be adapted, using the observations of the dynamic process. It then focuses on the problem of a changing cluster structure (new clusters, merging of clusters, splitting of clusters and the detection of gradual changes in the cluster structure). Finally, the book integrates these parts into a complete algorithm for dynamic fuzzy classifier design and classification.
