Book excerpt: The purpose of this literature review was to inform researchers of those predictive factors of job satisfaction previously identified for part-time faculty in higher education. They used the information gathered to help develop a survey instrument that was administered to 700 part-time faculty at their own institution. The results of the study, and an explanation of the technical elements of the instrumentation, became the subject of two other peer-reviewed publications. The review of the literature focused on studies from the 1990s to the present (2007), which surprisingly yielded only a few that were devoted to a study of job satisfaction for part-time faculty in higher education. It also briefly examined the theoretical constructs of two motivational theorists, Frederick Herzberg and Abraham Maslow. The most important research conducted so far on job satisfaction for part-time faculty was completed by Judith Gappa (Princeton University) and David Leslie (Florida State University) in 1993. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has also conducted a study known as the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF) every five or six years, i.e., 1988, 1993, 1999, and 2004, that includes a section for part-time faculty. This review examined three other academic studies and one on employee job satisfaction conducted by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)--something it has done each year beginning in 2007. It became evident to the researchers, after this review of the literature, that the following factors most appeared to predict job satisfaction for part-time faculty: autonomy, teaching schedule, pay, work preference, faculty support, recognition, status, class facilities, quality of students, and job security.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In 1990, two-year colleges nationwide reported that approximately 38% of their faculty were part-time. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics' (NCES) 1999 National Study of Post-Secondary Faculty (NSOPF), this percentage continues to rise, and currently exists at 40% or more in some two-year and four-year institutions. To retain competent, qualified, and successful teachers, it is critical for higher education administrators to determine factors that may contribute to part-time faculty's job satisfaction. This study investigated whether the use of instructional technology for curriculum delivery affected part-time faculty job satisfaction by investigating four specific areas that may be affected. The first component explored whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to overall part-time faculty job satisfaction in and four- year institutions. The second examined whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty in their first year of teaching. Third, it was the intent of the researcher to determine whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education contributed to the overall job satisfaction of part-time male and female faculty. In the fourth component, by applying an adaptation of the Center for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) curriculum classification scheme to group teaching fields, the researcher observed whether the use of a technology-based educational delivery system in higher education influenced the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty in each teaching discipline. The results of this study confirmed in eight of the research questions the notion that the use of instructional technology when teaching had no effect on the overall job satisfaction of part-time faculty. Two areas of statistical significance evolve around the Computer Science and Social Sciences disciplines. Although both null hypotheses were statistically rejected, a closer look at both of these areas demonstrates the need for further understanding of their statistical significance. The results of this study demonstrate that during the moment in time when the 1999 NSOPF survey was conducted, instructional technology may not have been a large enough component in the total package of teaching deliverables to make a measurable difference in job satisfaction (NCES, 2005). This observation applies to most liberal arts teaching disciplines and affects the variables of gender, years of teaching experience, and type of institution equally with little exception.

Numerous internal stressors uniquely affecting women and minorities must be recognized and dealt with to enhance job satisfaction and create a better fit between the faculty role and the person involved. It has been shown that women faculty members are less satisfied with their positions than their male counterparts because they are often forced to sacrifice more in terms of their personal lives in order to meet the demands of their jobs, as well as their families. As for minority faculty members, they generally find themselves less likely to be tenured compared to whites, are often concerned about lower salaries, feel isolated and less supported, and often encounter prejudice and racism. Leaders and faculty in higher education must implement a variety of recruiting and retention strategies if a faculty representing a diverse culture is to become a reality. Actions include: (1) recruiting women and minorities into undergraduate and graduate programs in sufficient numbers to fill the pool for faculty positions; (2) attracting women into disciplines where they are currently underrepresented; and (3) using incentives for departments to diversify. On the academic side, adjunct faculty have played a key role in post-secondary education for decades. As use of part-time adjunct faculty increases, now more than ever colleges should be focusing on attracting and retaining qualified adjunct faculty. Increasing enrollment, a changing demographic of student, modern technology and cost implications are all reasons why there has been an increase in demand for non-tenured or part-time faculty. With increased demand comes competition for the most qualified and able instructors. While competitive salary is a consideration, there are many other factors such as reputation, flexibility, comfort, and training that should be considered. This quantitative, Ex-Post- Facto (Casual-Comparative) study focused on Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory of Motivation, utilized the Part-Time Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey (P-TFJSS), specifically the subscale for overall job satisfaction, drew from a sample size of 250 adjunct faculty with 83 participants. Two outliers were removed leaving the sample size of 81 participants. A Mann-Whitney U test allowed the researcher to reject the null hypothesis. The researcher concluded that informal mentoring does indeed impact adjunct faculty job satisfaction.

There has been a paucity in the study of job satisfaction for faculty working in this sector of higher education (Kinser, 2006). Job satisfaction was measured by using the Job Descriptive Index (Stanton, Sinar, Balzer & Smith, 2002a) within the conceptual framework of faculty job satisfaction developed by Hagedorn (2000). The facets selected for study were: the work itself, salary, advancement, administration, and collegial relationships. The findings indicated that the job-satisfaction facets with the highest scores were administration and collegial relationships. The facets with the lowest scores were salary and advancement. Because these results were generally contrary to the scholarly literature on this topic, one primary recommendation was to continue this line of research using qualitative as well as quantitative methods.
