Book excerpt: The objective of this effort was to develop optical processing technology required to implement high performance signal processing systems. The work concentrated on the evaluation and characterization of GaAs nonlinear etalons and methods of using these etalons in optical processing functions. Experiments included the implementation of a one bit adder using symbolic substitution, a pattern recognizer that can distinguish between simple three spot patterns, an associative memory which can discriminate against two different input objects, and an all optical compare and exchange module which can compare the magnitude of two digital input signals and make an appropriate exchange decision. These experiments, although rudimentary, may be extendable to larger scales upon further development of the optical processing technology. Keywords: Multiple quantum wells; ZnS and ZnSe Interference filters; Associative memory; Gallium arsenide; Photorefractive crystals; Symbolic substitution; Pattern recognition; Optical bistability; Fabry perot etalons; Optical nonlinear directional coupler; Optical logic; Holographic optical elements. (KT).

Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.

Book excerpt: Optical computing has been effective at solving computationally difficult problems. Optical computing research has high risk, but high potential benefits. AFOR has had the lead role in basic optical computing research and must continue this role in coordination with other government and industrial funding. Current and future optical computing systems can be organized into a unified structure with five major components: input, processor array, interconnections, memory, output. Optics has great potential advantages in speed, bandwidth and parallelism, but electronics has the advantages of a well-developed technology. Basic research needs:-Materials - nonlinear, synthetic structures, processing element arrays - SMLs, interconnections/memories - materials, devices, arrays, architectures/algorithms - utilize parallelism.

Book excerpt: The conference "Nonlinear Optics and Optical Computing" was held May 11-19, 1988 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 13th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the invited and contributed papers presented at the conference, providing tutorial background, the latest research results, and future directions for the devices, structures and architectures of optical computing. The invention of the transistor and the integrated circuit were followed by an explosion of application as ever faster and more complex microelectronics chips became available. The information revolution occa sioned by digital computers and optical communications is now reaching the limits of silicon semiconductor technology, but the demand for faster com putation is still accelerating. The fundamental limitations of information processing today derive from the performance and cost of three technical factors: speed, density, and software. Optical computation offers the potential for improvements in all three of these critical areas: Speed is provided by the transmission of impulses at optical veloc ities, without the delays caused by parasitic capacitance in the case of conventional electrical interconnects. Speed can also be achieved through the massive parallelism characteristic of many optical computing architec tures; Density can be provided in optical computers in two ways: by high spatial resolution, on the order of wavelengths of light, and by computa tion or interconnection in three dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the art of optical signal processing technologies and devices. It presents breakthrough solutions for enabling a pervasive use of optics in data communication and signal storage applications. It presents presents optical signal processing as solution to overcome the capacity crunch in communication networks. The book content ranges from the development of innovative materials and devices, such as graphene and slow light structures, to the use of nonlinear optics for secure quantum information processing and overcoming the classical Shannon limit on channel capacity and microwave signal processing. Although it holds the promise for a substantial speed improvement, today’s communication infrastructure optics remains largely confined to the signal transport layer, as it lags behind electronics as far as signal processing is concerned. This situation will change in the near future as the tremendous growth of data traffic requires energy efficient and fully transparent all-optical networks. The book is written by leaders in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in optical technologies have made it possible to implement optical interconnections in future massively parallel processing systems. Photons are non-charged particles, and do not naturally interact. Consequently, there are many desirable characteristics of optical interconnects, e.g. high speed (speed of light), increased fanout, high bandwidth, high reliability, longer interconnection lengths, low power requirements, and immunity to EMI with reduced crosstalk. Optics can utilize free-space interconnects as well as guided wave technology, neither of which has the problems of VLSI technology mentioned above. Optical interconnections can be built at various levels, providing chip-to-chip, module-to-module, board-to-board, and node-to-node communications. Massively parallel processing using optical interconnections poses new challenges; new system configurations need to be designed, scheduling and data communication schemes based on new resource metrics need to be investigated, algorithms for a wide variety of applications need to be developed under the novel computation models that optical interconnections permit, and so on. Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections is a collection of survey articles written by leading and active scientists in the area of parallel computing using optical interconnections. This is the first book which provides current and comprehensive coverage of the field, reflects the state of the art from high-level architecture design and algorithmic points of view, and points out directions for further research and development.

Book excerpt: The main objective of the program is to utilize nonlinear optical wave mixing for spectrally parallel logic operations. In this program, we are investigating the parallel processing of information in the spectral domain. Specifically, we are investigating the optical implementation of spectrally parallel logic operations, including AND, XOR operations and logic inverter (also known as X-gates for set difference logic operations) using optical four wave mixing in nonlinear media such as photorefractive crystals, Kerr media. The spectral logic inverter, for example, can convert the spectrally encoded word of (1001) into a spectrally encoded word of (0110). In addition, we have also developed several new concepts in optical logic operations and optical computing. These include multiwavelength optical full adder with carry generation, multiwavelength full adder with polarization encoding scheme, modified signed digit arithmetic for multi-input digital optical computing, multiwavelength multiple beam splotters, optical fuzzy set reasoning, etc.
