Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1990 presents the Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and 8th International Conference on Thin Films, held in San Diego, California on April 2-6, 1990. It contains 219 papers covering a wide range of topics related to metallurgical coatings and thin films, including high temperature coatings, hard coatings, diamond films, tribology, and ion beam modification. Organized into 99 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion of a thermochemical model for diamond growth from the vapor phase and an experiment in large area diamond coating using a combustion flame torch in its traversing mode. It then explores the properties of diamond films, preparation of diamond-like carbon films using various ion-beam-assisted techniques, deposition of diamond-like films by laser ablation, and coating of cubic BN films on different substrates. The book examines surface processes and rate-determining steps in plasma-induced chemical vapor deposition, and addition of rare earths to improve scale adherence on heat-resisting alloys and coatings. The reader is introduced to high temperature wear and clearance control coatings, thermal barrier coatings, and corrosion resistant coatings. The book also discusses modification of coatings/surfaces to reduce friction; the mechanics of the tribology of thin films systems; mechanochemical interactions in the tribological behavior of materials; analysis and micromechanical testing of tribological coatings; surface modification using directed ion beams; and industrial equipment and processes. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in metallurgical coatings and thin films.

Book excerpt: Metallurgical coatings 1988 is a compilation of the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings. This volume is divided into four parts, which deal with synthesis and properties of coatings used in microelectronic applications; methods of characterizing coatings and modified surfaces; protective coatings for magnetic and optical thin film media; and thick and thin film censors. The first part of this volume is further subdivided into five sections focusing on thin film barrier layers, metallization for VLSI circuits, thin films used in packaging technology, new materials and emerging technologies and synthesis and microstructure of high Tc superconductors. The second part is also subdivided into four sections, each presenting different methods, such as the surface and thin film analysis techniques, microstructural characterization techniques, mechanical properties of films and coatings, and non-destructive characterization techniques. Part three discusses the preparation and characterization of reactively sputtered silicon nitride thin films, the bond structures and properties of chemically vapor-deposited amorphous SiC, and the wear of Co-Ni thin film magnetic recording tape against metallic and ceramic surfaces. Finally, this volume explores the insert-mounted thin film sensors for real-time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface & Coatings Technology, Volume 61 presents the proceeding of the 20th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films, held in San Diego, California, on April 19–23, 1993. This book discusses a variety of topics related to surface and coatings technology, including coatings for use at high temperature, hard coatings, and vapor deposition technology. Organized into 141 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the coating requirements for long-life bucket protection, how each of these coating systems has performed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. This text then discusses the gradient-free transition step achieved in the element analysis of the depth profiles. Other chapters consider the metastable yttrium oxide films that are synthesized using reactive sputter deposition. This book discusses as well the use of appropriate copper-based alloy coatings on structural components. The final chapter deals with the particle mechanical and thermal behavior in the process of high velocity oxy-fuel spraying. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers and metallurgists.

Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present study, a laser sintering/creep technique has been established to quantitatively determine the creep behavior of thermal barrier coatings under steady state high heat flux/high thermal gradient conditions. An approach is proposed to separate the strong influence of stress relaxation, based on the deduced strain rate changes with respect to time and temperature during testing. For a plasma sprayed zirconia-8wt.% yttria ceramic coating, a large primary creep strain and a low creep activation energy were observed. The significant primary creep stage and low apparent creep activation energy for the coating are attributed to stress induced mechanical sliding, and temperature and stress enhanced cation diffusion through the splat and grain boundaries. Possible creep mechanisms for the ceramic coating are also discussed. The elastic modulus evolution, the stress response and the total accumulated creep strain variation across the ceramic coating under laser imposed temperature and stress conditions are simulated using a finite difference approach. The modeled creep response is consistent with experimental observations.
