Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 The publication of a third volume of 'Papers' by the British School at Rome may fairly be taken as evidence of its continued activity and usefulness. The first paper contains a further instalment of the valuable work which the Assistant-Director, Mr. Ashby, is doing for the recovery of the lost history of the Campagna Romana. In this department of study Mr. Ashby has won for himself a well-deserved reputation as an indefatigable explorer, and a scrupulously accurate observer. It may be added in proof of the estimation in which Mr. Ashby is held by foreign scholars, and also of the friendly relations existing between the British School and the other foreign schools in Rome, that some of his shorter papers have been published by the French School in their Melanges. The papers by Mr. Stuart Jones and Mr. Wace are both of them valuable contributions to the study of a subject which has only recently received its due share of attention, the growth and development of Roman historical sculpture. Of especial importance are Mr. Stuart-Jones's arguments in favour of assigning the Borghese reliefs to the time of Trajan, and Mr. Wace's claim to have discovered in the Lateran and Vatican Museums fragments of reliefs belonging to the time of Domitian, which help to fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of Roman historical reliefs. Book excerpt: After the Roman empire fell, medieval Europe continued to be fascinated by Rome itself, 'the Chief of Cities', once the centre of the empire, including its history, its buildings, and above all its early Christian martyrs, and the papacy, central to the western Latin church. This book explores ways in which the city itself was preserved, envisioned, and transformed not only by its residents, but also by the many pilgrims who flocked to Rome, and by northern European cultures (in particular, the Irish and English) who imagined and imitated the city as they understood it.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 The title of this volume sufficiently indicates its character. The two monographs which it contains are the first fruits of the work done by the newly founded British School at Rome, and the hope of the Committee is that they will be followed in due course by many other similar papers, and will form a series not unworthy to be compared with the Mélanges of the French School at Rome. Of the two papers, that by the Director on S. Maria Antiqua will no doubt be found the most interesting by the majority of readers, but Mr. Ashby's possesses an importance of its own as a contribution to the task of reconstructing the Roman Campagna as it was before desolation and silence fell upon it. Book excerpt: These essays offer scholars, teachers, and students a new basis for discussing attitudes toward, and technological expertise concerning, water in antiquity through the early Modern period, and they examine historical water use and ideology both diachronically and cross regionally. Topics include gender roles and water usage; attitudes, practices, and innovations in baths and bathing; water and the formation of identity and policy; ancient and medieval water sources and resources; and religious and literary water imagery. The authors describe how ideas about the nature and function of water created and shaped social relationships, and how religion, politics, and science transformed, and were themselves transformed by, the manipulation of, uses of, and disputes over water in daily life, ceremonies, and literature. Contributors are Rabun Taylor, Sandra Lucore, Robert F. Sutton, Jr., Cynthia K Kosso, Kevin Lawton, Evy Johanne HA land, HA(c)lA]ne Cazes, Alexandra Cuffel, Mark Munn, Brenda Longfellow, Gretchen Meyers, Sara Saba, Scott John McDonough, Etienne Dunant, E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rome, Pollution and Propriety brings together scholars from a range of disciplines in order to examine the historical continuity of dirt, disease and hygiene in one environment, and to explore the development and transformation of these ideas alongside major chapters in the city's history, such as early Roman urban development, Roman pagan religion, the medieval Church, the Renaissance, the Unification of Italy and the advent of Fascism. This volume sets out to identify the defining characteristics, functions and discourses of pollution in Rome in such realms as disease and medicine, death and burial, sexuality and virginity, prostitution, purity and absolution, personal hygiene and morality, criminality, bodies and cleansing, waste disposal, decay, ruins and urban renovation, as well as studying the means by which that pollution was policed and controlled.
