Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first interdisciplinary discussions of taphonomy (the study of how fossil assemblages are formed) and paleoecology (the reconstruction of ancient ecosystems), this volume helped establish these relatively new disciplines. It was originally published as part of the influential Prehistoric Archeology and Ecology series. "Taphonomy is plainly here to stay, and this book makes a first class introduction to its range and appeal."—Anthony Smith, Interdisciplinary Science Reviews

Book Synopsis Estuarine Processes by : Martin Wiley
Download or read book Estuarine Processes written by Martin Wiley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuarine Processes, Volume II: Circulation, Sediments, and Transfer of Material in the Estuary provides information pertinent to estuarine processes and focuses on dynamic interactions at several levels of organization. This book describes the effects of physical alterations on estuarial hydraulics, dissolved and particulate material support, and on aquatic biota. Organized into six parts encompassing 27 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the historic changes in salinity balance in the estuarial zone of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This text then reviews the effect of enlargement of artificial waterway of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, which has resulted in substantial alterations of the physical hydrography, biotic populations and chemical environment of the canal and its approaches. Other chapters consider the elements in a mathematical model for estuarial sediment transport. This book discusses as well sediment transport rates in coastal waters. The final chapter deals with accurate estimates of fish abundance for models of many estuarine processes. This book is a valuable resource for ecologists, environmentalists, and scientists.

Book Synopsis Paleontological Events by : Carlton Elliot Brett
Download or read book Paleontological Events written by Carlton Elliot Brett and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent renaissance in the field of "event" stratigraphy has promoted a much more thorough examination of the geologic record of particular fossil-bearing strata. This reference work compiles the findings of leading researchers on fossil beds, epiboles and global bioevents, mapping out a definitive temporal and regional classification of event horizons. Based primarily on research with Lower and Middle Paleozoic rocks of eastern North America, 'this volume significantly links these events to relatively short-term phenomena, including storms and climate-forcing cycles. An invaluable resource for specialists and students in the fields of paleontology, paleoecology, stratigraphy, and sedimentology, Paleontological Events helps to clarify the biological and taphonomic significance of these horizons.

Book Synopsis Tidal Signatures in Modern and Ancient Sediments by : B. W. Flemming
Download or read book Tidal Signatures in Modern and Ancient Sediments written by B. W. Flemming and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IAS Special Publication contains 23 papers presented at the 3rd International Research Symposium on Modern and Ancient Clastic Tidal Deposits. This symposium series has an enviable international reputation for its quality, and so the contributions represent the latest developments in the field. The conference was preceded and followed by a number of field trips to some of the most prominent tidal flat and barrier island systems of continental Europe, and these have been written up as overview papers that summarize the current state of knowledge about these various tidal regions. The latest research results from this very specialized field. Book Synopsis Coastal Sedimentary Environments by : R.A. Jr. Davis
Download or read book Coastal Sedimentary Environments written by R.A. Jr. Davis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard A. Davis The zone where land and sea meet is composed of a variety of complex environ ments. The coastal areas of the world contain a large percentage of its population and are therefore of extreme economic importance. Industrial, residential, and recreational developments, as well as large urban complexes, occupy much of the coastal margin of most highly developed countries. Undoubtedly future expan sion in many undeveloped maritime countries will also be concentrated on coastal areas. Accompanying our occupation of coasts in this age of technology is a dependence on coastal environments for transportation, food, water, defense, and recreation. In order to utilize the coastal zone to its capacity, and yet not plunder its resources, we must have extensive knowledge of the complex environ ments contained along the coasts. The many environments within the coastal zone include bays, estuaries, deltas, marshes, dunes, and beaches. A tremendously broad range of conditions is represented by these environments. Salinity may range from essentially fresh water in estuaries, such as along the east coast of the United States, to extreme hypersaline lagoons, such as Laguna Madre in Texas. Coastal environments may be in excess of a hundred meters deep (fjords) or may extend several meters above sea level in the form of dunes. Some coastal environments are well protected and are not subjected to high physical energy except for occasional storms, whereas beaches and tidal inlets are continuously modified by waves and currents.
Book Synopsis Paleontology in Ecology and Conservation by : Julien Louys
Download or read book Paleontology in Ecology and Conservation written by Julien Louys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fossil record contains unique long-term insights into how ecosystems form and function which cannot be determined simply by examining modern systems. It also provides a record of endangered species through time, which allow us to make conservation decisions based on thousands to millions of years of information. The aim of this book is to demonstrate how palaeontological data has been or could be incorporated into ecological or conservation scientific studies. This book will be written by palaeontologists for modern ecologists and conservation scientists. Manuscripts will fall into one (or a combination) of four broad categories: case studies, review articles, practical considerations and future directions. This book will serve as both a ‘how to guide’ and provide the current state of knowledge for this type of research. It will highlight the unique and critical insights that can be gained by the inclusion of palaeontological data into modern ecological or conservation studies.
