Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Pioneer Historical Societies Convinced that they were doing great things, and anxious that the story should be properly told, the men Of the Revolutionary era were ready to be impressed with the need of assembling material for the future historian. Individuals could collect docu ments and write books as David Ramsay did, and William Gordon, and John Marshall; but, after all, materials had to be collected on a scale too large for any individual effort, before the historian could have proper foundations on which to build a solid structure. In the summer of 1789, while Washington and his associates were gradually putting into operation the new machinery of the federal government, there were a number of men who already had this subject much on their minds. Conspicuous among them were these three: Jeremy Belknap, of Boston, John Pintard, of New York, and Ebenezer Hazard, the postmaster-general of the Confederation and one of the' keenest antiquarians of the time. Book Synopsis Pioneer History of Indiana by : William Monroe Cockrum
Download or read book Pioneer History of Indiana written by William Monroe Cockrum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer History of Indiana: Including Stories, Incidents, and Customs of the Early Settlers In this volume many of the early happenings that occurred during the settling of Indiana are given for the first time and if this opportunity were not improved, a large amount of interesting history of our state would be lost. The writer claims no special credit for securing this history as it has been a pleasing task, self assigned. If the reader shall gain as much satisfaction from reading this volume as the author has from gathering the data from which to compile it, he will be amply repaid for the few hours he is so engaged. It is very gratifying to be able to go back to the settling of Indiana and tell about the brave men and women who first invaded its wildness and from whom sprang the hardy and superior race of people in all stations of life that now live within its confines. For fifty years the data for this volume has been collecting: From personal acquaintance with the pioneers, from a history of incidents transmitted from parents to children and from tradition that is accepted as reliable. From the above three sources it is believed that the truest history of the people of that early date, their manners and customs, the dangers they encountered from the Indians, the hunting for game and the many terrible encounters with savage beasts, has been secured. In submitting this work to the public the author wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to those who aided him in his researches and made the existence of this volume possible. These favors have come from all parts of the country - from historical societies, public libraries and men in official positions. The names of those giving the most valued assistance is hereby given. Download or read book A Settler's Year written by Kathleen Ernst and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a book with great meaning for those of us who grew up on farms, and a book to be shared with young people eager to know more about pioneer life." --Jerry Apps, author of "Old Farm: A History" and "Whispers and Shadows: A Naturalist's Memoir" "A Settler's Year" provides a rare glimpse into the lives of early immigrants to the upper Midwest. Evocative photographs taken at Old World Wisconsin, the country's largest outdoor museum of rural life, lushly illustrate stories woven by historian, novelist, and poet Kathleen Ernst and compelling firsthand accounts left by the settlers themselves. In this beautiful book, readers will discover the challenges and triumphs found in the seasonal rhythms of rural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As they turn the pages--traveling from sprawling farm to tidy crossroads village, and from cramped and smoky cabins to gracious, well-furnished homes--they'll experience the back-straining chores, cherished folk traditions, annual celebrations, and indomitable spirit that comprised pioneer life. At its heart "A Settler's Year" is about people dreaming of, searching for, and creating new homes in a new land. This moving book transports us back to the pioneer era and inspires us to explore the stories found on our own family trees.
