Makareta is the chosen one - carrying her family's hopes. Missy is the observer - the one who accepts but has her dreams. Mata is always waiting - for life to happen as it stealthily passes by. Moving from the forties to the present, from the country to the protests of the cities, Cousins is the story of these three cousins. Thrown together as children, they have subsequently grown apart, yet they share a connection that can never be broken.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the history of a pioneering family of immigrant farmers (the Hopkirks) in southeastern Iowa. It begins in 1838 and ends with the early life of the author, their great-grandson, who was born in their house, moved with his family to California and what he experienced as an immigrant growing up in that state. It is a unique transect through history, complete with many original letters (1807+) and photographs (1850s+) which tell the story and bring it to life for the reader.

Book excerpt: This pioneering examination of travel writing about New Zealand in the colonial period discusses a wide range of writing that helped place New Zealand on the literary map, while providing an oblique history of the young nation in the 19th century. Exploring early newspaper accounts; the journals of missionaries, traders, and adventurers; and the guidebooks and specialized descriptions of fishing, and hunting, which promoted New Zealand as a sporting paradise, Wevers finds that writing about New Zealand was an essential tool in the colonization process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19--a disease caused by a virus known as SARS-CoV-2--a global pandemic. The year 2020 was the year that brought global change that requires a global shift, and we can't be tone-deaf to it. This shift demands we respond swiftly to the problems. Novel coronavirus claimed its first victim in Wuhan Province of China. In the blink of an eye, the invisible enemy had soared and has taken the lives of thousands with no regard for social class, race, or status. Those identified as the most powerful in the world were equally affected as money, power, and fame did nothing to stop the virus from spreading. As of April 30, 2021, about 3.17 million people died of COVID-19 worldwide. Many wonder why God, who is Love, would allow humanity to go through these horrendous times. The COVID-19 pandemic storm has revealed the debility of human beings and the perfection of our God. God might not hurriedly change the situation, but He uses the situation to change us. God uses this time to test the faith of those genuinely serving and fully committed to Him. In Canceling Appointment with Death, COVID-19 Pandemic, 'Tayo Emmanuel invites readers around the globe to learn how to dwell in the secret place of the Most High and how to build a personal Noah's Ark for the individual and the family at such a time as this. This secret place of the Most High and Noah's Ark is never a place or a structure. It is Jesus Christ who has established us inside a kingdom that cannot be shaken and who has all things under His perfect control, working all things after the counsel of His own will. How can every appointment with death, including COVID-19 and other future pandemics, be annulled? 'Tayo Emmanuel offers us answers from the revelation of God's Word that all enemies have been placed under Jesus's feet, including death, the last enemy. And the last days' church of Jesus Christ, the many membered body of Christ, are the feet of Jesus Christ that will take Jesus, the head of the body of Christ to every nation of the world to usher in the end of the old and the beginning of the new. But now we see--yet not all things--put under him clearly shows that the Lord Jesus Christ, through the power of His Holy Spirit, is at work at this moment in history.

Book excerpt: In the 1930s a number of Irishmen came to New Zealand to seek a better life, with many carrying bitter memories of the atrocities committed by the Black and Tans and the British during WWI and the early 1920s. With the onset of WWII came the threat of conscription into the armed forces. As citizens of a neutral country, many Irishmen refused to betray their homeland to fight for New Zealand and, by default, Britain. They formed the ire National Association (ENA) to represent them in their battle against conscription, which not only opened discussions with the New Zealand government under Peter Fraser but also with the Irish prime minister, amon de Valera, thus pioneering direct diplomatic relations between the two countries. Peter Burke's farther was one of the group of immigrant Irishmen, and he documents the ENA's struggles with officials and politicians and how 155 Irishmen, including his father, faced deportation back to Ireland in the middle of WWII. Peter Burke was born in Wellington and is an old boy of St Patrick's College. He has worked for more than 50 years as a journalist in television, radio, print, and public relations. He travelled widely overseas covering political and trade talks in Europe, Asia, North America and the Pacific, eventually specialising in agricultural journalism. Peter is a life member of the NZ Guild of Agricultural Journalists and the Science Communications Association of New Zealand. He's a keen (rather than good) golfer, loves Celtic and classical music and lives on a small farm south of Levin. Regarding Ireland as his second home, Peter frequently spends time in the Emerald Isle, and his visits have led him to develop a love of Irish and family history.
