Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our National Defense, the Patriotism of Peace Ammunition is necessary to win a battle. Where it is a great Battle for Peace, to be fought with pen and voice, the ammunition needed is facts. Whenever the people of the United States know the facts relating to the subject to which this book is devoted, then what it advocates will be done. Much fault has been found with Congress because of the country's unpreparedness. Congress is not at fault. "The stream cannot rise higher than the fountain." The will of the people is the law. The people of this nation are unalterably opposed to a big Standing Army. When they know that the safety of the nation can be assured without either the cost or the menace of militarism, the people will demand that it be done, and Congress will register that popular decree, gladly and willingly. It is not at all surprising that Congress does not yield to the clamor of the militarists when they know the adverse sentiment of the people on that subject. President Schurman of Cornell recently said: "It would be self-deception of the grossest character if Americans made their love of peace the criterion of the military policy and preparedness of their country. It would be madness to enfeeble and imperil the United States because we believe peace the chief blessing of the nations." All that is true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and National Defence The dreams of the New England colonists along the Connecticut valley were never darker than when the startled sleepers awoke with the war-whoop of the french-indian raids; but the story would have been sadder now, if the piety and good sense, of the Puritans had not alike taught them that their duty and their safety was to fight. Such wars and fightings came not of their lusts, but of their manhood. This, in a nutshell, contains the solution of all doubtful disputations on the peace question. Nothing that I shall say can diminish the ardor with which we most devoutly pray: Lord, send peace in our time. With this introduction I propose to discuss, in a prac tical manner, certain points that are worthy of general consideration. Wars have always occurred with a ten deney to periodicity - enough so, at all events, to require no prophet to tell us that they will probably occur again enough so to show that we cannot yet beat our swords into ploughshares, nor neglect the duties of preparation, both of material resources and of the virtues of courage to use them promptly and successfully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gettysburg in War and in Peace The heroism of the American soldier has won (as it so well de served, ) the applause and admiration of the world. N ow in the days of tranquil peace, with our country united, prosperous and wonderfully progressive, we are a nation of patriotic citizens. It is that same patriotism that prompts and encourages us to visit the scenes and localities now dedicated and consecrated to the perpetua tion of American valor, there to do homage to the memory of our fallen kindred of the blue or the grey, who, inspired by an intuitive sense of duty, sacrificed all - home, friends, position and life itself - in defense of the cause they thought was right. Let not one thought or bitter prejudice suggest the passions of that awful conflict. The war is over, and with it should terminate every semblance of hatred and every recollection of individual sacrifice. Therein exists the evidence of true patriotism, without which the soldier's valor must be devoid of earnestness and manly courage. Peace reigns supreme, and now in friendship true, United are the boys who wore the grey and blue. Each valiant hero of that sturdy fight Fought nobly for the cause he thought was right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace With Patriotism At the present moment, when issues vaster and more imminent overshadow all our thinking, the mere question of why the Army sniffs at the University, and the University sniffs back at the Army, is too little actual, seriously to engage anyone's attention. The don has turned soldier, and proudly, if a little shamefacedly, parades the uniform which, ten years ago, would have been to him anathema. Still, even in this sudden fraternity rumour says that, as between Regular and Territorial, brotherly love does not wholly continue. Be this as it may, a trivial and merely professional rivalry or even animosity would not at a time so critical be worth analy sis, save that this very rivalry is significant of bigger issues of those momentous issues of War and Peace on which our whole being is now exclusively focussed. It is because, with every fibre of body and mind, I stand for Peace that I want to try and understand this ancient animosity. If I seem to start from matters parochial, I can promise to end with ques tions international. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace, Patriotic and Religious Addresses: Delivered During His Administration The International Peace Forum takes pleasure in presenting to the public the accompanying addresses delivered during his present administration by President William Howard Taft. They are but few of his platform efforts in behalf of the religious, educational and patriotic interests of the country, but they show how faithfully he has served every good cause of Church and State, without partisanship, sectionalism or sectarianism, and therefore how much he is entitled to the gratitude and esteem of all who are devoted to the spiritual, moral and political welfare of the Nation. The Forum is not a political organization. It is enlisted in the cause of Industrial, Social and International Peace. It is not unmindful, however, of the noble and inspiring service of President Taft in behalf of the Peace movement, and therefore does not hesitate to urge the importance of his re-election, that there may be no backward step in the advance toward Industrial and International Peace that has been so pronounced during the Test administration. Towering above narrow partisanship, ignoring sectional lines and overflowing the boundaries of denominationalism, he has served the people, regardless of creed, caste and party, exalted the flag, defended the Constitution, and made his country first among the nations of the earth. Remarks of President Taft to Miss Booth and Officers of the Salvation Army, in the East Room of the White House, February 20, 1911. "Anything that I can do to testify to the feeling that I have in respect to the good work that you and your Association are doing, I am glad to do, and Mrs. Taft sympathizes with me in that. I valued the opportunity to hear you last night, and I thank you for giving it to me." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why "America First"?: The Basis of Our Patriotism If there has been a departure from this principle on the part of the government, is it because the citizen has lost his sense of individual dignity, lost his grasp on his relations and responsibility to the government? Can it be that the original American idea has been modified with time by in uences that are alien, nay, hostile to the fundamental principles of American institutions? This is our government, our country, and when there is a question of preference, when it is America or some other country, it is and must be America first. We are the last to call in question the hearty love and veneration that another may have for his native land. We know that it is natural and entitled to respect. Moreover, we have always respected it. We have a right to expect, however, nay, we demand that native sons, as also men who have sworn allegiance to the United States, never forget for a moment that this Republic, on questions in volving peace and war, commands absolute subordination of any and all political interests to the interests of the United States. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bugle Calls of Liberty: Our National Reader of Patriotism Throughout our history the greatest waves of patriotism have been awakened and inspired by the speeches of those who, thrilled with the spirit of a great cause, have sounded a note which roused the country to action. It was President Wilson's message to Congress in April, 1917, that sounded the call that roused America to service, sacrifice and battle, just as Patrick Henry's speech in 1775 roused the Virginians. This book gives some of the great speeches which have either inspired our fore-fathers or have inspired us to use the vast resources of our country for the causes of liberty, freedom, justice or World Democracy. It gives these speeches in the order of their occurrence, and by way of introduction tells enough of the story of the times so that one may understand the full significance of each of these great masterpieces. The historical setting and the speeches together present a very important part of the history of our country in a most impressive way. The reading of this book cannot fail to make better American citizens - imbued with a still more patriotic spirit and with a much greater reverence for our flag. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the 20th century featured a strategic competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. That competition avoided World War III in part because during the 1950s, scholars like Henry Kissinger, Thomas Schelling, Herman Kahn, and Albert Wohlstetter analyzed the fundamental nature of nuclear deterrence. Decades of arms control negotiations reinforced these early notions of stability and created a mutual understanding that allowed U.S.-Soviet competition to proceed without armed conflict. The first half of the 21st century will be dominated by the relationship between the United States and China. That relationship is likely to contain elements of both cooperation and competition. Territorial disputes such as those over Taiwan and the South China Sea will be an important feature of this competition, but both are traditional disputes, and traditional solutions suggest themselves. A more difficult set of issues relates to U.S.-Chinese competition and cooperation in three domains in which real strategic harm can be inflicted in the current era: nuclear, space, and cyber. Just as a clearer understanding of the fundamental principles of nuclear deterrence maintained adequate stability during the Cold War, a clearer understanding of the characteristics of these three domains can provide the underpinnings of strategic stability between the United States and China in the decades ahead. That is what this book is about.

Introduction The Backbone of the Armed Forces To be a member of the United States Armed Forces--to wear the uniform of the Nation and the stripes, chevrons, or anchors of the military Services--is to continue a legacy of service, honor, and patriotism that transcends generations. Answering the call to serve is to join the long line of selfless patriots who make up the Profession of Arms. This profession does not belong solely to the United States. It stretches across borders and time to encompass a culture of service, expertise, and, in most cases, patriotism. Today, the Nation's young men and women voluntarily take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and fall into formation with other proud and determined individuals who have answered the call to defend freedom. This splendid legacy, forged in crisis and enriched during times of peace, is deeply rooted in a time-tested warrior ethos. It is inspired by the notion of contributing to something larger, deeper, and more profound than one's own self.
