Book excerpt: With more than 1 million copies sold worldwide, The Elements is the most entertaining, comprehensive, and visually arresting book on all 118 elements in the periodic table. Includes a poster of Theodore Gray's iconic photographic periodic table of the elements! Based on seven years of research and photography by Theodore Gray and Nick Mann, The Elements presents the most complete and visually arresting representation available to the naked eye of every atom in the universe. Organized sequentially by atomic number, every element is represented by a big beautiful photograph that most closely represents it in its purest form. Several additional photographs show each element in slightly altered forms or as used in various practical ways. Also included are fascinating stories of the elements, as well as data on the properties of each, including atomic number, atomic symbol, atomic weight, density, atomic radius, as well as scales for electron filling order, state of matter, and an atomic emission spectrum. This of solid science and stunning artistic photographs is the perfect gift book for every sentient creature in the universe.

Book excerpt: This “excellent” popular science book explores just what we—and the things around us—are made of (Aftenposten, Norway). Some elements get all the attention: glittering gold, radioactive uranium—materials we call “precious” because they are so rare. But what could be more precious than the building blocks of life—from the oxygen in our air to the carbon in all living things? In The Elements We Live By, physicist and award-winning author Anja Røyne reminds us that we’d be lost without the quiet heroes of the periodic table. Our bodies need phosphorous to hold our DNA together, potassium to power our optic nerves, and many more elements—in just the right amounts—to function. Other fundamental elements keep our technology (and society) running: Our phones contain arsenic, boron, and gallium to control signals and store information; indium and tin for the touch screen; and lithium for the battery. Everything is made of elements—every galaxy, star, and planet—from the iron in Earth’s core to the silicon in its sand. But that doesn’t mean the elements we rely on will never run out; for example, about half the lithium we need is extracted from rocks in Australia, and the other half is from saltwater in Argentina and Chile. As Røyne travels the world to find where these elements exist (some in ever-shrinking amounts), she shows how vitally urgent it is for us to protect them—the elements of our very existence. “Not just a discussion of basic chemistry, this is a volume that looks at the human impact on the planet and what we can learn from nature...Useful for science or sociology courses that address the various impacts of natural resource development or for popular science readers.” —School Library Journal

Book excerpt: An element of obvious importance, mercury is also hazardous in the environment and corrosive to many materials. A knowledge of its solubility is inestimable in addressing problems concerning the element's concentration in our surroundings. This volume presents all relevant data published on the solubility of mercury up to June 1986. By combining these data with the mercury equilibrium vapour pressure, Henry's constant and Ostwald coefficients can be calculated.

Book excerpt: The cocrystallization of Fe in trace quantities with oxine formed homogeneously in solution by the hydrolysis of 8-acetoxyquinoline was studied. The distribution of microcomponent between the solid phase and the mother liquor was profoundly affected by the degree of supersaturation. After relief from supersaturation, a constant distribution coefficient was calculated by an equation which was predicated upon the Doerner-Hoskins equilibrium. The cocrystallization of other elements was also examined with an arbitrarily established set of conditions. Pu, Ce, and Pr were quantitatively recovered from solution. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands have a well-documented capacity for extracting metals, particularly uranium, from ground and surface waters containing only very dilute concentrations of the metals. The plutonic and volcanic rocks of the Colorado Rockies contain uranium concentrations high enough to serve as a uranium source to waters that feed wetlands. Reconnaissance sampling was conducted in 145 montane and subalpine wetlands in Colorado to determine how many of them are uraniferous. Forty-six percent of the wetlands showed the presence of moderate or high concentrations of uranium, but unless the price of uranium substantially increases none of the deposits is of economic value. Many of the processes responsible for concentrating uranium and other metals in organic-rich sediments of wetlands are reversible, however, and serious environmental consequences may occur if anthropogenic or natural disturbances change the chemical conditions in a wetland sufficiently to release uranium or other metals.

Book excerpt: There is now compelling evidence that the complexity of higher organisms correlates with the relative amount of non-coding RNA rather than the number of protein-coding genes. Previously dismissed as “junk DNA”, it is the non-coding regions of the genome that are responsible for regulation, facilitating complex temporal and spatial gene expression through the combinatorial effect of numerous mechanisms and interactions working together to fine-tune gene expression. The major regions involved in regulation of a particular gene are the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions and introns. In addition, pervasive transcription of complex genomes produces a variety of non-coding transcripts that interact with these regions and contribute to regulation. This book discusses recent insights into the regulatory roles of the untranslated gene regions and non-coding RNAs in the control of complex gene expression, as well as the implications of this in terms of organism complexity and evolution.
