Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Physics - Quantum Physics, grade: 4.00, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, course: Nanostructure Physics, language: English, abstract: We have investigated electron transmission through non-tunneling regime of a semiconductor nanostructure called Coupled Quantum Well (CQW). Oscillatory transmission coefficient as a function of energy is found to show spectacular waxing and waning in amplitude. Corresponding features are expected to be observed in optical (Physical Review B 54 (1996) 1541) and quantum transport (Physical Review Letters 58 (1987) 816) experiments and hence the results besides verifying the Physics will have impact on future devices based on CQW.

Book excerpt: The relaxation of isolated quantum many-body systems is a major unsolved problem of modern physics, which is connected to many fundamental questions. However, realizations of quantum many-body systems which are both well isolated from their environment and accessible to experimental study are scarce. In recent years, the field has experienced rapid progress, partly attributed to ultra-cold atoms. This book presents the experimental study of a relaxation phenomenon occurring in a one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junction. The system consists of two 1D quasi Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb, magnetically trapped on an atom chip. Using radio-frequency dressing, the author deforms a single harmonic trap, in which the atoms are initially condensed, into a double-well potential and realizes a splitting of the wave function. A large spatial separation and a tilt of the double-well enable the preparation of a broad variety of initial states by precisely adjusting the initial population and relative phase of the two wave packets, while preserving the phase coherence. By re-coupling the two wave packets, the author investigates tunneling regimes such as Josephson (plasma) oscillations and macroscopic quantum self-trapping. In both regimes, the tunneling dynamics exhibits a relaxation to a phase-locked equilibrium state contradicting theoretical predictions. The experimental results are supported with an empirical model that allows quantitative discussions according to various experimental parameters. These results illustrate how strongly the non-equilibrium dynamics differ from the equilibrium one, which is well described by thermodynamics and statistical physics.

Book excerpt: We report strong, amplitude modulated, oscillatory resonant transmission of electron through non-tunneling regime (E > V0) of the nanostructure called symmetric double barrier. We present thorough and complete analytical calculation and thorough numerical investigations. Amplitude of the oscillations shows spectacular waxing and waning as a function of energy E. We could not fathom anything like this before the numerical investigations. We have successfully accounted for the waxing and waning both qualitatively and quantitatively showing nearly perfect agreement. The book contains background on Quantum Mechanics, Microelectronics and Nanostructure Physics so that readers having no background of Microelectronics and Nanostructure Physics can assimilate the book completely. Content of the book is stunning and novel: not known to anybody or reported by anybody anywhere else, to our knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of single charge tunneling comprises of phenomena where the tunneling of a microscopic charge, usually carried by an electron or a Cooper pair, leads to macro scopically observable effects. The first conference entirely devoted to this new field was the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Single Charge Tunneling held in Les Hauches, France, March 5-15, 1991. This book contains a series of tutorial articles based on lectures presented at the meeting. It was intended to provide both an introduction for nonexperts and a valuable reference summarizing the state of the art of single charge tun neling. A complementary publication with contributions by participants of the NATO Advanced Study Institute is the Special Issue on Single Charge Tunneling of Zeitschrift für Physik B, Vol. 85, pp. 317-468 (1991 ). That issue with original papers provides a snapshot af the leading edge of current research in the field. The success of the meeting and the publicatian of this volume was made possible through the generaus support af the NATO Scientific A:ffairs Division, Brussels, Belgium. The Centre de Physique des Hauches has provided a superbly situated conference site and took care af many lacal arrangements. Both far the preparation of the conference and the handling af some manuscripts the suppart af the Centre d 'Etudes de Saclay was essential. The editing of the proceedings volume would not have been passible without the dedicated efforts of Dr. G. -1. Ingald, who tailared a 1\.

Book excerpt: When I was contacted by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Fall of 200 I, inviting me to edit a volume of papers on the issue of electron transport in quantum dots, I was excited by what I saw as an ideal opportunity to provide an overview of a field of research that has made significant contributions in recent years, both to our understanding of fundamental physics, and to the development of novel nanoelectronic technologies. The need for such a volume seemed to be made more pressing by the fact that few comprehensive reviews of this topic have appeared in the literature, in spite of the vast activity in this area over the course of the last decade or so. With this motivation, I set out to try to compile a volume that would fairly reflect the wide range of opinions that has emerged in the study of electron transport in quantum dots. Indeed, there has been no effort on my part to ensure any consistency between the different chapters, since I would prefer that this volume instead serve as a useful forum for the debate of critical issues in this still developing field. In this matter, I have been assisted greatly by the excellent series of articles provided by the different authors, who are widely recognized as some of the leaders in this vital area of research.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the electronic and optical properties of two low-dimensional systems: quantum dots and quantum antidots and is divided into two parts. Part one is a self-contained monograph which describes in detail the theoretical and experimental background for exploration of electronic states of the quantum-confined systems. Starting from the single-electron picture of the system, the book describes various experimental methods that provide important information on these systems. Concentrating on many-electron systems, theoretical developments are described in detail and their experimental consequences are also discussed. The field has witnessed an almost explosive growth and some of the future directions of explorations are highlighted towards the end of the monograph. The subject matter is dealt with in such a way that it is both accessible to beginners and useful for expert researchers as a comprehensive review of most of the developments in the field.Furthermore the book contains 37 reprinted articles which have been selected to provide a first-hand picture of the overall developments in the field. The early papers have been arranged to portray the developments chronologically, and the more recent papers provide an overview of future direction in the research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantum transport theory, which dates back to the time of the Landauer theory in the field of mesoscopic physics, is now expanding its power on materials science and chemistry by earning chemical accuracy and physical reality and has become a new subject of non-equilibrium quantum transport theory for charge and heat at nanoscale. This growing subject invites cross-disciplinary developments, for example, the local heating theory developed earlier was examined and applied to the self-heating problem in the field of semiconductor- and nanoelectronic-device physics. This book compiles 25 key published papers to provide readers with convenient and comprehensive access to the important results and developments in the field. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers from varied backgrounds, especially those involved in charge- and/or heat-transport problems that widely spread over various subjects in materials science, chemistry, electric engineering, and condensed matter physics.
