Book Synopsis The Benedictine Order in the United States by : Joel Rippinger
Download or read book The Benedictine Order in the United States written by Joel Rippinger and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By the early part of the nineteenth century, political forces had reduced Benedictine houses on the European continent to their lowest numbers in over a millennium. At the century's close, however, the Order was enjoying a glorious springtime. This growth was nowhere more vigorous than in North America, where, beginning in 1846, an ever-increasing number of Benedictine men and women arrived to minister to the German-speaking immigrants. These monastic missionaries would carry Benedictine ideals across the frontier, providing a leaven for a growing American Catholic Church. The present account of this restoration and expansion is a fascinating one. While individual monasteries and convents have left written records of their own history, the contribution of this work lies in weaving these various strands into their religious, political and cultural context. The resulting synthesis is a valuable addition to the literature not only of the Benedictine Order, but also of the Catholic Church in the United States." [Back cover].

Book Synopsis Abbatial Authority and the Writing of History in the Middle Ages by : Benjamin Pohl
Download or read book Abbatial Authority and the Writing of History in the Middle Ages written by Benjamin Pohl and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that abbatial authority was fundamental to monastic historical writing in the period c.500-1500. Writing history was a collaborative enterprise integral to the life and identity of medieval monastic communities, but it was not an activity for which time and resources were set aside routinely. Each act of historiographical production constituted an extraordinary event, one for which singular provision had to be made, workers and materials assigned, time carved out from the monastic routine, and licence granted. This allocation of human and material resources was the responsibility and prerogative of the monastic superior. Drawing on a wide and diverse range of primary evidence gathered from across the medieval Latin West, this book is the first to investigate systematically how and why abbots and abbesses exercised their official authority and resources to lay the foundations on which their communities' historiographical traditions were built by themselves and others. It showcases them as prolific authors, patrons, commissioners, project managers, and facilitators of historical narratives who not only regularly put pen to parchment personally, but also, and perhaps more importantly, enabled others inside and outside their communities by granting them the resources and licence to write. Revealing the intrinsic relationship between abbatial authority and the writing of history in the Middle Ages with unprecedented clarity, Benjamin Pohl urges us to revisit and revise our understanding of monastic historiography, its processes, and its protagonists in ways that require some radical rethinking of the medieval historian's craft in communal and institutional contexts.

Book excerpt: By the turn of the 20th Century, Cullman was firmly established as the preeminent settlement in the hill country between the Tennessee Valley and the mineral region surrounding Birmingham. The Cullman, Alabama Tribune continued to record news of the development of the city, county, and surrounding region. As with the first five books of this series, microfilm was obtained from the State Archives in Montgomery and Wallace College at Hanceville and reviewed, but the originals from the Cullman County Court House was the primary source. A page by page examination of the film and originals was conducted with every birth, death, marriage, obituary, and some news items important to the history and development of Cullman County was recorded. This book is important to any genealogist or historian with connections to Cullman County and contains many rare accounts and mentions of the earliest settlers of the region.
