Book excerpt: DANS CETTE THESE NOUS NOUS INTERESSONS AU SUPPORT DES APPLICATIONS PRESENTANT DES CONTRAINTES DE QUALITE DE SERVICE (QOS) TEMPORELLES. LA PRISE EN COMPTE DE CES CONTRAINTES EST AJOURD'HUI FAITE MANUELLEMENT PAR LE DEVELOPPEUR D'APPLICATIONS QUI DOIT LES TRADUIRE EN DIRECTIVES D'ORDONNANCEMENT. NOUS PROPOSONS UNE APPROCHE DANS LAQUELLE LES CONTRAINTES DE QOS TEMPORELLES SONT AUTOMATIQUEMENT TRADUITES EN DIRECTIVES D'ORDONNANCEMENT. DANS CETTE APPROCHE, LE DEVELOPPEUR D'APPLICATIONS SPECIFIE DES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES ENTRE LES EVENEMENTS IMPORTANTS DE SON APPLICATION (SOUS FORME D'EQUATIONS DE QOS SIMPLES). CES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES SONT ALORS AUTOMATIQUEMENT TRADUITES EN DIRECTIVES D'ORDONNACEMENT. POUR CE FAIRE, LES FILS DE CONTROLE DE L'APPLICATION SONT DECOUPES EN BRINS AUXQUELS ON ASSOCIE DES ECHEANCES DERIVEES DES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES SPECIFIEES. LA DECOMPOSITION EN BRINS GUIDE L'ORDONNANCEMENT DES FILS DE CONTROLE APPLICATIFS ASSOCIES. LE SYSTEME SUPPORT MET EN UVRE UN MECANISME D'ORDONNANCEMENT COOPERATIF BASE SUR UN DIALOGUE ENTRE L'ORDONNANCEUR DU SYSTEME D'EXPLOITATION ET L'ORDONNANCEUR APPLICATIF. LES DEUX ORDONNANCEURS APPLIQUENT UNE POLITIQUE D'ORDONNANCEMENT EDF (ECHEANCE LA PLUS PROCHE D'ABORD). ILS ORDONNANCENT AU MIEUX EN TENANT COMPTE DES CONTRAINTES IMPOSEES. ETANT DONNE QUE CETTE APPROCHE NE PERMET PAS DE GARANTIR LE RESPECT DES CONTRAINTES DE QOS TEMPORELLES, LES APPLICATIONS DOIVENT ETRE CAPABLES D'ADAPTER CES CONTRAINTES A L'ENVIRONNEMENT D'EXECUTION ET PAR LA-MEME AUX VARIATIONS DE LA CHARGE DU SYSTEME. POUR CETTE RAISON, L'ORDONNANCEUR APPLICATIF MET EN UVRE UNE POLITIQUE DE GESTION DES VARIATIONS DE LA CHARGE BASEE SUR LES SPECIFICATIONS DU DEVELOPPEUR D'APPLICATIONS. UN PROTOCOLE DE PARTAGE DES RESSOURCES EST EGALEMENT PROPOSE POUR PERMETTRE AUX FILS DE CONTROLE APPLICATIFS DE PARTAGER DES RESSOURCES SANS RISQUE D'INTER-BLOCAGE. DES MESURES DU COUT ADDITIONNEL ENGENDRE PAR L'ORDONNANCEMENT AUTOMATIQUE SONT EFFECTUEES GRACE A UN DEMONSTRATEUR QUE NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE. LES MESURES SONT ENCOURAGEANTES. ELLES SONT, CEPENDANT TRES DEPENDANTES DE LA STRUCTURE DU GRAPHE DE DEPENDANCES GENERE A PARTIR DES PORTIONS DE CODE DE L'APPLICATION.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CETTE THESE S'INTERESSE A L'ORDONNANCEMENT DU CPU POUR DES APPLICATIONS DE PRESENTATION MULTIMEDIA REPARTIES, DANS LE CADRE DES SYSTEMES D'EXPLOITATION A BUT GENERAL OU LA QUALITE DES APPLICATIONS PEUT S'ADAPTER AUX CONDITIONS D'EXECUTION. LES FLOTS MULTIMEDIA PRESENTENT DES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES QUI DOIVENT ETRE PRISES EN COMPTE LORS DE L'ALLOCATION DE RESSOURCES, AUSSI BIEN DANS LES RESEAUX QUE DANS LES SYSTEMES, AFIN DE SATISFAIRE LA QUALITE DE SERVICE (QOS) DEMANDEE PAR L'UTILISATEUR. CES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES SE REFERENT A LA CONTINUITE DES FLOTS INDIVIDUELS, AUSSI APPELEE SYNCHRONISATION INTRA-FLOT, AINSI QU'AUX RELATIONS TEMPORELLES ENTRE FLOTS DIFFERENTS, OU SYNCHRONISATION INTER-FLOTS. L'ALLOCATION DU CPU DANS DES SYSTEMES UNIX TRADITIONNELLES NE PERMET PAS D'OFFRIR AUX APPLICATIONS MULTIMEDIA UN SERVICE CAPABLE DE SATISFAIRE CES CONTRAINTES. LES APPROCHES EXISTANTES VISANT A RESOUDRE CE PROBLEME NE CONSIDERENT QUE LES BESOINS DES FLOTS INDIVIDUELS, LA SYNCHRONISATION INTER-FLOTS N'ETANT DONC PAS ASSUREE. NOUS PROPOSONS UN MODELE D'ORDONNANCEMENT QUI PERMET DE GERER L'ALLOCATION DU CPU EN RESPECTANT AUSSI BIEN LA CONTINUITE QUE LA SYNCHRONISATION INTER-FLOTS. DANS LE CADRE DE CE MODELE, NOUS DEFINISSONS UNE STRUCTURE D'APPLICATION GENERIQUE QUI PERMET DE PROJETER LES BESOINS DES FLOTS CONTINUS SUR DES UNITES D'EXECUTION DU SYSTEME, ET DE TRANSMETTRE LES BESOINS DE QOS DE SYNCHRONISATION A L'ORDONNANCEUR SOUS FORME DE TSPN (TIME STREAMS PETRI NETS). NOUS DEFINISSONS UN ALGORITHME D'ORDONNANCEMENT DONT LE BUT EST DE RESPECTER LES CONTRAINTES TEMPORELLES DES FLOTS LES PLUS SENSIBLES, TOUT EN MINIMISANT LA DEGRADATION POUR LES FLOTS ADAPTATIFS POUR UNE CAPACITE DE CPU DONNEE, ET EN PRESERVANT LES RELATIONS TEMPORELLES ENTRE LES FLOTS. L'ADAPTATION EST DONC CONTROLEE PAR LE BIAIS DE L'ORDONNANCEUR, ELIMINANT UNE COUCHE DE DECISION QUI PEUT PROVOQUER DES DEGRADATIONS PLUS IMPORTANTES QUE NECESSAIRE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding how to make the best of human skills and knowledge is essential in the design of technology and jobs, particularly where these involve decision-making and uncertainty. Recent developments have been made in naturalistic decision-making, distributed cognition and situational awareness, particularly with respect to aviation, transport and strategic planning, the nuclear industry and other high-risk industries. Despite the integration of computer-based support systems in production scheduling in recent years, the reality is that most enterprises consist of reactive re-scheduling, involving a high degree of human involvement. It is often with the insight, knowledge and skills of people that scheduling skills can function with any degree of success. Human Performance in Planning and Scheduling covers many industries, including clothing, steel, machine tools, paper/board, and the automobile industry. Using international case studies from various manufacturing industries, they highlight the fact that the human scheduler is a pivotal element in the scheduling process. Each section of the book includes an introduction with an overview of the material to follow, clearly identifying themes, discussion points and highlights inter-connections between the authors' work.

Book excerpt: The evolution of broadband access networks toward bimodal fiber-wireless (FiWi) access networks, described in this book, may be viewed as the endgame of broadband access. After discussing the economic impact of broadband access and current worldwide deployment statistics, all the major legacy wireline and wireless broadband access technologies are reviewed. State-of-the-art GPON and EPON fiber access networks are described, including their migration to next-generation systems such as OCDMA and OFDMA PONs. The latest developments of wireless access networks are covered, including VHT WLAN, Gigabit WiMAX, LTE and WMN. The advantages of FiWi access networks are demonstrated by applying powerful network coding, heterogeneous optical and wireless protection, hierarchical frame aggregation, hybrid routing and QoS continuity techniques across the optical-wireless interface. The book is an essential reference for anyone working on optical fiber access networks, wireless access networks or converged FiWi systems.

Book excerpt: This book is a significant contribution to the subject of mining time-changing data streams and addresses the design of learning algorithms for this purpose. It introduces new contributions on several different aspects of the problem, identifying research opportunities and increasing the scope for applications. It also includes an in-depth study of stream mining and a theoretical analysis of proposed methods and algorithms. The first section is concerned with the use of an adaptive sliding window algorithm (ADWIN). Since this has rigorous performance guarantees, using it in place of counters or accumulators, it offers the possibility of extending such guarantees to learning and mining algorithms not initially designed for drifting data. Testing with several methods, including Naïve Bayes, clustering, decision trees and ensemble methods, is discussed as well. The second part of the book describes a formal study of connected acyclic graphs, or 'trees', from the point of view of closure-based mining, presenting efficient algorithms for subtree testing and for mining ordered and unordered frequent closed trees. Lastly, a general methodology to identify closed patterns in a data stream is outlined. This is applied to develop an incremental method, a sliding-window based method, and a method that mines closed trees adaptively from data streams. These are used to introduce classification methods for tree data streams.

Book excerpt: This book considers both the present state of Arctic shipping and possible future trends with reference to the various sectors of maritime transportation: cruise tourism, container traffic and bulk shipping. Ports are analysed as tools that support the strategies of coastal states to foster the development of resource extraction, enhance the attractiveness of Arctic shipping lanes and enable the control of maritime activities through coast guard deployment. The aim of this book is to draw a picture of the trends of Arctic shipping. How is traffic evolving in Canada’s Arctic, or along the Northern Sea Route? Are there significant differences between bulk and container shipping segments when considering the Arctic market? How are the ports and the hinterland developing and what are the strategies behind those? How is the legal framework shaping the evolution of maritime transportation? The contributors to this book consider all of these questions, and more, as they map out the prospects for Arctic shipping and analyse in detail the development of Arctic shipping as a result of multi-variable interactions. This book will be key reading for industry professionals and post-graduate students alike.

Book excerpt: In 2017, the new journal Internet Histories was founded. As part of the process of defining a new field, the journal editors approached leading scholars in this dynamic, interdisciplinary area. This book is thus a collection of eighteen short thought-provoking pieces, inviting discussion about Internet histories. They raise and suggest current and future issues in the scholarship, as well as exploring the challenges, opportunities, and tensions that underpin the research terrain. The book explores cultural, political, social, economic, and industrial dynamics, all part of a distinctive historiographical and theoretical approach which underpins this emerging field. The international specialists reflect upon the scholarly scene, laying out the field’s research successes to date, as well as suggest the future possibilities that lie ahead in the field of Internet histories. While the emphasis is on researcher perspectives, interviews with leading luminaries of the Internet’s development are also provided. As histories of the Internet become increasingly important, Internet Histories is a useful roadmap for those contemplating how we can write such works. One cannot write many histories of the 1990s or later without thinking of digital media – and we hope that Internet Histories will be an invaluable resource for such studies. This book was originally published as the first issue of the Internet Histories journal.

Book excerpt: With a novel, less classical approach to the subject, the authors have written a book with the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The treatment is therefore less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual aspects, the idea being to allow the readers to think about the subject at a higher conceptual level, thus building the foundations for more advanced topics. The book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vein, the last chapter pulls together the individual topics as discussed throughout the book into an in-depth look at the development of an end-to-end communication system, namely, a modem for communicating digital information over an analog channel.
