Book excerpt: This thesis provides the first comprehensive theoretical overview of the electronic and optical properties of two dimensional (2D) Indium Selenide: atomically thin films of InSe ranging from monolayers to few layers in thickness. The thesis shows how the electronic propertes of 2D InSe vary significantly with film thickness, changing from a weakly indirect semiconductor for the monolayer to a direct gap material in the bulk form, with a strong band gap variation with film thickness predicted and recently observed in optical experiments. The proposed theory is based on a specially designed hybrid k.p tight-binding model approach (HkpTB), which uses an intralayer k.p Hamiltonian to describe the InSe monolayer, and tight-binding-like interlayer hopping. Electronic and optical absorption spectra are determined, and a detailed description of subbands of electrons in few-layer films and the influence of spin-orbit coupling is provided. The author shows that the principal optical excitations of InSe films with the thickness from 1 to 15 layers broadly cover the visible spectrum, with the possibility of extending optical functionality into the infrared and THz range using intersubband transitions.

Book excerpt: We have measured the optical properties of films of the organic semiconductors PTCDA and HBC, prepared by Organic Molecular Beam Expitaxy (OMBE), on different substrates by means of Differential Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS). The optical setup used [51] allows to characterize the samples in situ and during the film growth. This enables us to directly follow the thickness dependent optical properties of the organic films, starting from submonolayer coverage up to thicker films on the order of 20 monolayers (ML) film thickness. However, due to the different optical nature of the different substrates used, i.e., mica, glass, Au(111), and HOPG, the DRS signal can not directly be interpreted in terms of the absorption of the films. Rather, the optical constants n (index of refraction) and k (absorption index) of the organic films have to be calculated to be able to discuss the spectral absorption of the films. We have proposed a method by which the calculation of the optical constants of thin films on arbitrary substrates from just one spectral measurement (in our case the DRS) becomes possible. The results fulfill a priori a Kramers-Kronig consistency, characteristic for physically meaningful values of the optical constants, and no specific model is needed to express the spectral behavior of the optical constants. Still, the requirement that the absorption index has to approach zero sufficiently at the measurement intervals restricts the application of our method to a class of materials, which exhibit distinct and well-separated absorption bands, like e.g. organic semiconductors. By means of appropriate extrapolation procedures, the method is able to account for small non-zero values of the absorption index at the boundaries of the measurement interval. Although we exclusively discussed the application of our method to differential reflectance spectra, it is anticipated that it works for all other optical quantities likewise.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a broad overview of the fundamental materials science of thin films that use silicon as an active substrate or passive template, with an emphasis on opportunities and challenges for practical applications in electronics and photonics. It covers three materials classes on silicon: Semiconductors such as undoped and doped Si and SiGe, SiC, GaN, and III-V arsenides and phosphides; dielectrics including silicon nitride and high-k, low-k, and electro-optically active oxides; and metals, in particular silicide alloys. The impact of film growth and integration on physical, electrical, and optical properties, and ultimately device performance, is highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline and Amorphous Thin Films and Devices is a compilation of papers that discusses the electronic, optical, and physical properties of thin material layers and films. This compilation reviews the different applications of thin films of various materials used as protective and optical coatings, thermal transfer layers, and selective membranes from submicron- area VLSI memory units to large-area energy conservation devices. Some papers discuss the basic properties, such as growth, structure, electrical, and optical mechanisms that are encountered in amorphous and polycrystalline thin semiconductor films. For example, experiments on electronic structure of dislocations have led to a model for the intrinsic properties of grain boundaries in polycrystalline semiconductor thin films that can have an impact on the designs of high-efficiency, thin-film solar cells. Other papers review the problems encountered in these thin layers in active semiconductor devices and passive technologies. Techniques in film growth and control variables of source, substrate temperature, and substrate properties will determine the successful performance of the devices installed with these thin film layers. This compilation can prove valuable for chemists, materials engineers, industrial technologists, and researchers in thin-film technology.
