They have a unique property in which the bulk of the material acts as an insulator, while the surface states display metallic behavior. Using infrared, optical and magneto-optical spectroscopy, we have studied 3D topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 to understand their optical properties. The measurements were carried out using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer at varying temperatures ranging from 5 Kelvin to 300 Kelvin and at varying magnetic fields up to 18 Tesla. We use the Drude-Lorentz model to replicate the experimental data of the samples allowing to gain an understanding of the physical phenomena happening in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet regions of radiation. This understanding gives us insight on the optical properties of the materials such as charge dynamics. Results show that the temperature and magnetic field have an effect on the charge carriers especially near the plasma frequency.

Book excerpt: Topological Insulators, volume six in the Contemporary Concepts of Condensed Matter Series, describes the recent revolution in condensed matter physics that occurred in our understanding of crystalline solids. The book chronicles the work done worldwide that led to these discoveries and provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the field. Starting in 2004, theorists began to explore the effect of topology on the physics of band insulators, a field previously considered well understood. However, the inclusion of topology brings key new elements into this old field. Whereas it was thought that all band insulators are essentially equivalent, the new theory predicts two distinct classes of band insulators in two spatial dimensions and 16 classes in three dimensions. These "topological" insulators exhibit a host of unusual physical properties, including topologically protected gapless surface states and exotic electromagnetic response, previously thought impossible in such systems. Within a short time, this new state of quantum matter, topological insulators, has been discovered experimentally both in 2D thin film structures and in 3D crystals and alloys. It appears that topological insulators are quite common in nature, and there are dozens of confirmed substances that exhibit this behavior. Theoretical and experimental studies of these materials are ongoing with the goal of attaining the fundamental understanding and exploiting them in future practical applications. Usable as a textbook for graduate students and as a reference resource for professionals Includes the most recent discoveries and visions for future technological applications All authors are prominent in the field

Book excerpt: Most macroscopic properties of a material (electrical, thermal, and optical) can be understood on the basis of its band structure and the dynamical behavior of its electrons. However, resolving electron dynamics directly is difficult using conventional techniques because the underlying interactions typically occur on a femtosecond timescale. Ultrafast photoemission spectroscopy is an experimental technique which can probe electronic band structure with femtosecond time resolution. This dissertation presents work using this technique to study dynamic phenomena in the topological insulator Bi2Se3, a fascinating material due to the coexistence of its insulating bulk and metallic surface electronic structures. It will demonstrate three types of novel measurements that can be performed with ultrafast photoemission spectroscopy which are unattainable by other methods: (1) By performing two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy, it is possible to resolve unoccupied band structure above the Fermi level. In Bi2Se3 this reveals a second, topologically protected surface state. (2) Time-resolved 2PPE (tr2PPE) is used to record real-time "movies" of the electron relaxation which follows optical excitation. This allows for the identification of intra- and inter- band electron scattering pathways in the material. Temperature-dependent tr2PPE measurements are performed on the conduction band to help understand the role of electron-phonon coupling. A model of fundamental electron-phonon scattering processes is implemented to describe the results. (3) In a time- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) experiment, intense optical excitation is used to drive coherent motion of A1g optical phonon modes in Bi2Se3. These modes lead to periodic binding energy shifts in the bulk conduction band and surface state. A slight red-shift of the phonon frequency is observed in the surface state, which is used to deduce a softening of the phonon due to the abrupt termination of the crystal at its surface.

Book excerpt: Topological Insulators (TIs) are insulators in the bulk, but have exotic metallic states at their surfaces. The topology, associated with the electronic wavefunctions of these systems, changes when passing from the bulk to the surface. This work studies, by means of infrared spectroscopy, the low energy optical conductivity of Bismuth based TIs in order to identify the extrinsic charge contribution of the bulk and to separate it from the intrinsic contribution of the surface state carriers. The extensive results presented in this thesis definitely shows the 2D character of the carriers in Bismuth-based topological insulators. The experimental apparatus and the FTIR technique, the theory of optical properties and Surface Plasmon Polaritons, as well as sample preparation of both crystals and thin films, and the analysis procedures are thoroughly described.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topological insulators are a new class of three-dimensional quantum materials whose interior or bulk is an insulator but whose surface is a conductor. Bi2Se3 is a prototypical topological insulator that physicists at MIT are manufacturing and studying. Various interesting properties of the topological insulator include the flow of pure spin currents and topological protection. Pure spin current, distinct from electric current, is a net flow of spin without a net flow of charge. Recent research at MIT has revealed that shining circularly polarized laser light on a topological insulator turns its surface's pure spin current into a spin-polarized electrical current. The band structure of the bulk of a topological insulator resembles that of an ordinary insulator; the conduction band and valence band are separated, with the Fermi level falling between them. However, for Bi2Se3, the conducting surface's dispersion relation can be modeled by a Dirac cone, which crosses the Fermi level. Electrons with opposing spins reside on opposite sides of the Dirac cone. Illuminating a topological insulator with either left or right circularly polarized light depopulates one side of the Dirac cone, leaving on the other side the desired spin-polarized electrical current. In the experiment performed for this thesis, thin films of Bi2Se3 were grown on substrates of sapphire via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Electrical devices on a micron scale were then fabricated on the thin film surface and used to measure surface currents. Steps of this experiment included characterizing the surface quality of a sapphire substrate using atomic force microscopy (AFM), making electrical devices with Bi2Se3 via the processes of optical lithography, ion milling, and electron beam metal deposition. Photocurrents across these electrical devices were induced by the manipulation of optics and lasers and measured using low noise electronics. Experimental results revealed that it was indeed possible to induce spin-polarized electrical currents on thin films of MBE grown Bi2Se3. The desired photocurrent was observed when the laser beam spot size was enlargened to illuminate the entirety of the Bi2Se3 device simultaneously. These results were not replicable when the laser was more tightly focused onto a smaller area. Scanning the focused laser beam across the Bi2Se3 confirmed that different photocurrents were being induced at different points; these results led us to the conclude that there was something inhomogenous about our device. The reason behind this device inhomogeneity is still under investigation.

As an ideal candidate for low power electronics, spintronic and quantum computation, topological insulators have been actively studied both theoretically and experimentally in the past couple of years. To achieve high quality thin films of topological insulators and understand their properties thoroughly is a critical step towards all potential applications. In this dissertation, I will introduce methods to fabricate high quality topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films using both pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with a radio frequency (RF) cracker cell. Using PLD, bilayers of topological insulator Bi2Se3 and insulating ferromagnet EuS were fabricated. Weak localization of the surface states was observed at the interface under the Curie temperature of EuS, as a direct evidence of the proximity effect. Using MBE with the RF cracker cell, high quality ultrathin Bi2Se3 films were successfully grown. Analysis of the magneto-resistance of those ultrathin samples measured at low temperature shows both the characteristic weak antilocalization from the surface states and the weak localization from the quantized bulk states, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. With our abilities to add various dopants during the deposition, and to deposit high quality thin films of different materials other than topological insulators, in both the MBE and PLD systems, we are excited to see the door to more interesting structures and fascinating physics opening in front of us.

Book excerpt: This book presents the transport studies of topological insulator thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Through band structure engineering, the ideal topological insulators, (Bi1−xSbx)2Te3 ternary alloys, are successfully fabricated, which possess truly insulating bulk and tunable conducting surface states. Further transport measurements on these ternary alloys reveal a disentanglement between the magnetoelectric and thermoelectric properties. In magnetically doped topological insulators, the fascinating quantum anomalous Hall effect was experimentally observed for the first time. Moreover, the topology-driven magnetic quantum phase transition was Systematically controlled by varying the strength of the spin-orbital coupling. Readers will not only benefit from the description of the technique of transport measurements, but will also be inspired by the understanding of topological insulators.
