They all worked as carpenters before becoming famous in movies and politics. Most carpenters are not hoping for fame, nor are they working in their craft temporarily while planning for another career. Carpenters love what they do and are happy to build rewarding careers that will last a lifetime. Carpentry is a craft that primarily involves making things from wood. Most carpenters use their skills to build and repair residential and commercial buildings. Within the construction industry, there are several types of carpentry, each requiring different specialized skills. The two main types are rough carpentry and finish carpentry. Roofers and framers are rough carpenters. Their work is rarely seen. Finish carpenters work on all the fine details that will be seen, like trim, molding, and fixtures. Not all carpenters work in the construction industry. Some build bridges and ships, while others make furniture or boats. Some even create theatrical sets for movies and TV. Within the construction industry, carpentry projects can vary widely from one project to the next. However, most involve the same basic steps. It starts with reading blueprints and other instructions provided by supervisors or homeowners. From there, carpenters carefully measure, mark, and organize materials. The materials are cut and shaped with hand and power tools, then joined together with nails, screws, staples, and glue. Levels, plumb bobs, and framing squares are used at every step to make sure everything is straight and smooth. Sometimes carpenters use prefabricated components rather than creating pieces from scratch. Installing factory-made staircases, wall panels, pre-hung windows, and roofing assemblies is quicker and easier than cutting and assembling many small pieces. Carpenters work in every city and community because they are needed everywhere. Once they are fully trained, they can find employment anywhere in the US. Those who live in cities often work for large construction companies that hire crews of dozens or even hundreds of carpenters, each of whom is assigned to a specific task. Carpenters working in smaller communities are less likely to specialize and will usually put a broader range of skills to good use. They are typically employed by small contractors and residential builders. There are also many carpenters who are self-employed. In fact, one out of three carpenters is an independent contractor who usually seeks work directly from homeowners. There is a high demand for carpenters. The number of positions available for new carpenters is on the rise. Because of the high turnover and the never-ending need for more buildings, there will always be jobs for those who want them. The prospects are excellent for those entering the field, however, job opportunities are best for well-trained carpenters with diverse skills. These skills are often learned on the job while working as apprentices or helpers to more experienced carpenters. No college is required, but it still can take three to five years to complete an apprenticeship. A career in carpentry has many attractive features, including excellent pay, easy entry, fulfilling work, flexibility, self-employment options, upward mobility, and good job outlook. If you are looking for a career with minimal stress and good work-life balance, that does not require a college degree, read on. Carpentry may be what you are looking for.

Book excerpt: With over thirty thousand occupations currently in existence, workers today face a bewildering array of careers from which to choose, and upon which to center their lives. But there is more at stake than just a paycheck. For too long, work has driven a wedge between families, dividing husband from wife, father from son, mother from daughter, and family from home. Building something that will last requires a radically different approach than is common or encouraged today. In Durable Trades, Groves uncovers family-centered professions that have endured the worst upheavals in history--including the Industrial Revolution--and continue to thrive today. Through careful research and thoughtful commentary, Groves offers another way forward to those looking for a more durable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with the black, African American, carpenter in mind. There are many books out there about construction but none that talk about the issues that confront the black carpenters. The subject matter in this book is laid out in a well thought out and progressive manner. Many hours of dedication and care have gone into its completion. It starts with developing the right mindset. From this foundation all the necessary character traits essential for success in the construction field are explained clearly in simple language. Next we explore the Black Contractors Association and the resources available for innercity black men and women seeking training in the construction trades. Since its conception its goal has been the training of master builders and tradesmen from the labor pool of black communities. Learn about apprenticeship training and the differences between the apprenticeship programs. Staying healthy and avoiding injuries explains correct lifting techniques that prevent serious back injuries, as well as the different types of PPE, an acronym for personal protective equipment that is designed to protect you the worker from injuries. Then we jump into the Union versus non-union companies, and go into detail about the benefits of belonging to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters or the AGC Associated General Contractors of America and will inform you on how to make an informed decision on which one will make more sense depending on your goals and career paths. You will also find out about the tools of the trade: what tools you should purchase, the bags you should wear and the clothing and PPE’s that are required to work on construction sites. We explore details about cordless and specialty tools and the different brands that carpenters use out in the field. Discover the different building materials used in the construction field. Learn about the different applications that fasteners can be used in on a building and what ones work best in special circumstances. Building systems reveals modern construction practices and systems carpenters and tradesmen use today out in the construction field to construct buildings and structures. Trade Specializations takes a look at all the different trades and specializations the construction field offers black workers. In applying at job-sites I will reveal how to get hired in two weeks or less when applying for work at construction sites. Determine how far you should travel when seeking employment and how to get compensated for traveling expenses. In Discrimination in the Industry we uncover how racially motivated politics is used to exclude blacks and minorities from management positions in the construction industry. I will also teach you how to resolve and report racial discrimination directed toward you on job-sites. In Staying Productive, we learn how a high level of energy and production can keep you employed for the long term. In Certifications & Trainings the reader will explore what the difference is between the two and what programs will help advance the worker’s career. Preparing for the contractors’ exam give the reader a detailed road map and the requirements to prepare to pass the states contractor exam. Continue Learning reviews the learning process and how to continue to ask the right questions and develop a lifelong education plan that will advance your career for years to come. Construction Terms is a glossary of housing terms used in the construction field. Learning and memorizing these terms will give you an inside look at the language used by carpenters and builders in construction. These terms will also allow you to see how building materials and construction applications come together in a construction project. More about the Author is a short bio on how I arrived in the construction field as a carpenter.
