Book Synopsis Opportunities for Carcass Trait Genetic Improvement of Canadian Heavy Lambs by : Erin Massender
Download or read book Opportunities for Carcass Trait Genetic Improvement of Canadian Heavy Lambs written by Erin Massender and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carcass yield and quality have a major impact on the profitability of meat lamb production. This thesis presents the first genetic parameter estimates for carcass traits in a Canadian heavy lamb population, as well as their relationship with economically important growth and ultrasound traits. The impact of alternative slaughter end points was also evaluated. Finally, the value of including carcass traits in existing terminal sire selection indexes was assessed. Carcass yield and quality traits were found to be moderately heritable and substantial genetic improvement was expected through selection. Alternative slaughter end points had little impact on heritability estimates, but did have an effect on the magnitude and direction of genetic correlations. The inclusion of hot carcass weight in existing terminal sire selection indexes was found to increase the accuracy and efficiency of selection, but further research is needed to determine optimal methods to improve carcass quality traits.

Book Synopsis Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition by : Mario Luiz Chizzotti
Download or read book Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition written by Mario Luiz Chizzotti and published by Brill Wageningen Academic. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in feeding frequency may lead to difference in utilization of dietary nutrients. The effects of feeding frequency have been tested in growing pigs and finishing pigs using respiratory quotient and postprandial kinetics of plasma metabolites. A reduced feeding frequency resulted in an increased lipogenesis and proteolysis shortly after the meal both in growing and finishing pigs. Nevertheless, growing and finishing pigs exhibit different metabolic pathways when feeding frequency is reduced.
Download or read book Goat Science written by Sándor Kukovics and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goat science covers quite a wide range and varieties of topics, from genetics and breeding, via nutrition, production systems, reproduction, milk and meat production, animal health and parasitism, etc., up to the effects of goat products on human health. In this book, several parts of them are presented within 18 different chapters. Molecular genetics and genetic improvement of goats are the new approaches of goat development. Several factors affect the passage rate of digesta in goats, but for diet properties, goats are similar to other ruminants. Iodine deficiency in goats could be dangerous. Assisted reproduction techniques have similar importance in goats like in other ruminants. Milk and meat production traits of goats are almost equally important and have significant positive impacts on human health. Many factors affect the health of goats, heat stress being of increasing importance. Production systems could modify all of the abovementioned characteristics of goats.

Book Synopsis Changes in the Sheep Industry in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Changes in the Sheep Industry in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. sheep industry is complex, multifaceted, and rooted in history and tradition. The dominant feature of sheep production in the United States, and, thus, the focus of much producer and policy concern, has been the steady decline in sheep and lamb inventories since the mid-1940s. Although often described as "an industry in decline," this report concludes that a better description of the current U.S. sheep industry is "an industry in transition."

Download or read book 52nd International Congress of Meat Science and Technology written by Declan Troy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contains over 300 offered papers in addition to 4 papers from invited speakers presented at the 52nd International Congress of Meat Science and Technology, held in Dublin, Ireland, from 13-18 August 2006. Under the theme of harnessing and exploiting global opportunities, areas covered in the congress included meat quality encompassing genomics and biotechnology, animal production and production systems, muscle biology and biochemistry; meat safety, meat processing and packaging technology, consumer topics and meat and health. A new approach this year was to address specific hot topics important to the industry and meat scientists, in particular, electrical stimulation and new instrumental methods for evaluation of meat quality characteristics. These proceedings reflect the truly global nature of meat research and give an insight into the current research issues for the industry."
Book Synopsis Improving the Sensory and Nutritional Quality of Fresh Meat by : Joseph Kerry
Download or read book Improving the Sensory and Nutritional Quality of Fresh Meat written by Joseph Kerry and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-01-22 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of the scientific basis of quality attributes in meat is becoming more advanced, providing more effective approaches to the control of meat eating and technological quality. This important collection reviews essential knowledge of the mechanisms underlying quality characteristics and methods to improve meat sensory and nutritional quality.Part one analyses the scientific basis of meat quality attributes, such as texture and tenderness, colour, water-holding capacity and flavour development. Chapters on the nutritional quality of meat and meat sensory evaluation complete the section. Part two discusses significant insights into the biology of meat quality obtained from genomic and proteomic perspectives, with chapters focussing on different types of meat. Parts three and four then review production and processing strategies to optimise meat quality, considering aspects such as production practices and meat nutritional quality, dietary antioxidants and antimicrobials, carcass interventions, chilling and freezing and packaging. Methods of meat grading and quality analysis are also included. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Improving the sensory and nutritional quality of fresh meat is a standard reference for those industrialists and academics interested in optimising meat quality. - Reviews methods to improve meat sensory and nutritional quality considering the effects of different production practices such as chilling, freezing and packaging - Analyses the scientific basis of meat quality attributes covering texture, tenderness, colour and water-holding capacity - Examines production and processing strategies to optimise meat quality, including the current state of development and future potential
