Book excerpt: Systems analysis represents an approach to, or a way of looking at, complex problems of choice under uncertainty. It offers a means of discovering how to design or to make effective use over time of technologically complex structure in which the different componetns may have apparently conflicting objectives; that is, an approach to choosing a strategy that yields the best balance among risks, effectiveness, and costs. Its purpose is to place each element in its proper context so that in the end the system as a whole may achieve its aim with a minimal expenditure of resources. Thus systems analysis is a common sense approach to problems of decision.

Download or read book Systems Analysis and Modeling in Defense written by R. Huber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of an interna tional symposium devoted to Modeling and Analysis of Defense Processes in the context of land/air warfare. It was sponsored by Panel VII (on Defense Applications of Operational Research) of NATO's Defense Research Group (DRG) and took place 27-29 July 1982 at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Except perhaps for the Theater-Level Gaming and Analysis Workshop, sponsored by the Office of united 1 states Naval Research in 1977 , this symposium was the first international scientific meeting on Operations Research/Systems Analysis in the area of land/air war fare since the conference on Modeling Land Battle Systems 2 for Military Planning sponsored by NATO's Special Pro gramme Panel on Systems Science in 1974. That conference dealt primarily with modeling small unit (company, bat talion) engagements and, to a lesser extent, large unit (corps, theater) campaigns with principal emphasis on attrition processes and movement in combat. It was considered as rather successful in that it revealed the state-of-the art around 1972 and identified problem areas and promising approaches for future developments. lWith regard to foreign attendance, this wo- shop was largely limited to participants from the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany (see L.J. Low: Theater-Level Gaming and Analysis Workshop for Force Planning, Vol II-Summary, Discus sion of Issues and Requirements for Research, SRI Report, May, 1981).
Book Synopsis History of Operations Research in the United States Army, V. 3, 1973-1995 by : Charles R. Shrader
Download or read book History of Operations Research in the United States Army, V. 3, 1973-1995 written by Charles R. Shrader and published by Department of the Army. This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new science of operations research played an important role in the winning of World War II and must be reckoned with the other major scientific discoveries of that era--radar, sonar, rockets and guided missiles, the proximity fuse, and the atomic bomb. In the ensuing half-century, ORSA techniques have been applied to the solution of a broad range of complex problems, and Army leaders have come to rely on ORSA analysts to assist them in the development of weapons, organization, tactics, training, management, and indeed all the fields of military endeavor. The success achieved by Army ORSA managers and analysts in their appointed task is amply demonstrated by the rapid buildup of forces in the Persian Gulf in 1990-1991 and the victory of U.S. and allied forces in the 100-hour ground war against Iraqi forces that followed in February 1991. That victory was the product of nearly fifty years of steady progress in the application of operations research/systems analysis to Army decision making.

Book Synopsis Developments in Operational Research by : R. W. Eglese
Download or read book Developments in Operational Research written by R. W. Eglese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Operational Research reviews developments in operational research (OR) and includes numerical examples to illustrate techniques and applications. Topics covered include some of the most widely used OR ""techniques"", such as mathematical programming and simulation, together with the contribution of OR methodology to specific application areas, such as capital investment appraisal and purchasing. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an introduction to the state of mathematical programming systems, along with the relevance of other optimization algorithms to OR and techniques for handling certain types of nonlinearity. The discussion then turns to network optimization techniques and their applications for the New Zealand Justice Department as well as for the wheat and dairy industries. The following chapters focus on computer simulation as applied in OR, with emphasis on various approaches to discrete event modeling; application of OR to industrial maintenance and replacement; financial appraisal methods, including discounting methods; and the use of Bayesian decision analysis to decision making. This text concludes by looking at the purchasing function and the limitations of classical stock control theory in practice. Models and procedures are developed to cope with real situations. Materials requirements planning, quantity discounts, price inflation, commodity purchasing decisions, and blending problems are considered. This monograph will be of interest to planners, decision makers, and others involved in operations research.
Book Synopsis Advanced Operations Management for Complex Systems Analysis by : Jingzheng Ren
Download or read book Advanced Operations Management for Complex Systems Analysis written by Jingzheng Ren and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on operations management methods for analysing complex systems from a system engineering perspective. It presents various advanced multi-criteria decision analysis methods for investigating factors that influence complex systems. In turn, it shows how to improve systems’ performance, including their competitiveness, safety, and sustainability. The book also draws on examples of typical virtual systems such as tourism, aviation maintenance, and waste-to-wealth systems to illustrate the operations management methods discussed. Cases from day-to-day life are used to elicit heuristic questions on the operations management methods presented in each chapter. The book will help researchers, operations managers, and engineers alike to understand the latest advances in operations management methods for analysing complex systems from the standpoint of system engineering.
