Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sixty-seventh anniversary year of the groundbreaking Supreme Court decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case that outlawed segregation in the nation’s public schools, research reveals that schools have undergone significant re-segregation. The anguish that many of us feel about this incredible failure of public policy underscores the layered aspect of achieving racial equality in America. In Florida, and across the nation, the steps that have been taken to implement affirmative action in higher education have been under constant attack by conservatives, and a series of actions by various state and federal courts have resulted in reduced access and enrollment of students of color in several states. In 1999, Governor Jeb Bush used his authority to redefine affirmative action in his state by issuing an executive order that established the One Florida Initiative (OFI). Bush’s claim that the OFI was intended to increase diversity and opportunities for people of color in Florida’s state university system appears to be contradicted by findings that minority representation actually decreased in most of the state universities after the policy was implemented. Hilton and colleagues provide a cogent analysis of the effects of the OFI on enrollment patterns in the state’s public law schools to help us understand how changes in public policy can have detrimental effects on particular communities. The research is both enriched and complicated by the inclusion of the two law schools: Florida A&M and Florida International Universities, both of which are minority-serving institutions (MSIs). These schools were developed independently of the OFI but had a potential effect on the level of diversity that can be calculated across the system. The use of critical race theory offers an approach that will prove unnerving to some readers, but is one that provided insights that may not have been revealed through a different framework.
Book Synopsis In the Land of Good Living by : Kent Russell
Download or read book In the Land of Good Living written by Kent Russell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wickedly smart, funny, and irresistibly off-kilter account of an improbable thousand-mile journey on foot into the heart of modern Florida, the state that Russell calls "America Concentrate." In the summer of 2016, Kent Russell--broke, at loose ends, hungry for adventure--set off to walk across Florida. Mythic, superficial, soaked in contradictions, maligned by cultural elites, segregated from the South, and literally vanishing into the sea, Florida (or, as he calls it: "America Concentrate") seemed to Russell to embody America's divided soul. The journey, with two friends intent on filming the ensuing mayhem, quickly reduces the trio to filthy drifters pushing a shopping cart of camera equipment. They get waylaid by a concerned citizen bearing a rifle; buy cocaine from an ex-wrestler; visit a spiritual medium. The narrative overflows with historical detail about how modern Florida came into being after World War II, and how it came to be a petri dish for life in a suddenly, increasingly diverse new land of minority-majority cities and of unrivaled ethnic and religious variety. Russell has taken it all in with his incomparably focused lens and delivered a book that is both an inspired travelogue and a profound rumination on the nation's soul--and his own. It is a book that is wildly vivid, encyclopedic, erudite, and ferociously irreverent--a deeply ambivalent love letter to his sprawling, brazenly varied home state.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Only One Florida: Considered From Every Point of View; A New Book States, but the trees, plants, animals, soils and seasons have changed, and even the dwellings and clothing of the people. In the forests he will miss nearly every tree with which' he is familiar, or if he sees one, it is in a cold Wet soil, or an extreme northern county, and in diminutive proportions. The woods of Florida are of other families and species, not less valuable, but dif' ferent. The new comer may be amused for a season, but the chances are even that the difference will work dissatisfaction in a short time. If he comes irem the rocky hills and mountains of New England, from the drift and boul' der regions of Michigan and Wisconsin, he will miss the stone fences and gravel soils. If from the black sedimentary plains of Illinois and Iowa, he will be disgusted with the sands of Florida. He will not find the clays and muds of Ohio and Kentucky. Come from where he may, he will find a change from all he has before seen and known. He will not see fields of hundreds of acres waving with wheat, oats, barley and corn, nor four horses hitched to a gang of plows turning over ten acres of soil in a day, or to a reaper that cuts and binds ten acres of grain in a day. The grain seeder is not seen in the field. Come from where he may, expect what he may, he is sure to find un expected changes. With superficial knowledge, he will declare the ridges and dry grounds barrens, and the flat lands swamps. Se he makes up his mind in a day and nothing can change it. Back he goes, and talks and writes in his ignorance. Florida is better for his absence Some come expecting a change; they find more than they expected. They investigate the causes.
