Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family is a complex decision unit in which partners with potentially different objectives make consumption, work and fertility decisions. Couples marry and divorce partly based on their ability to coordinate these activities, which in turn depends on how well they are matched. This book provides a comprehensive, modern and self-contained account of the research in the growing area of family economics. The first half of the book develops several alternative models of family decision making. Particular attention is paid to the collective model and its testable implications. The second half discusses household formation and dissolution and who marries whom. Matching models with and without frictions are analyzed and the important role of within-family transfers is explained. The implications for marriage, divorce and fertility are discussed. The book is intended for graduate students in economics and for researchers in other fields interested in the economic approach to the family.

Book excerpt: This book presents the basic model of an agricultural household that underlies most of the case studies undertaken so far. The model assumes that households are price-takers and is therefore recursive. The decisions modeled include those affecting production and the demand for inputs and those affecting consumption and the supply of labor. Comparative results on selected elasticities are presented for a number of economies. The empirical significance of the approach is demonstrated in a comparison of models that treat production and consumption decisions separately and those in which the decisionmaking process is recursive. The book summarizes the implications of agricultural pricing policy for the welfare of farm households, marketed surplus, the demand for nonagricultural goods and services, the rural labor market, budget revenues, and foreign exchange earnings. In addition, it is shown that the basic model can be extended in order to explore the effects of government policy on crop composition, nutritional status, health, saving, and investment and to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the effects on budget revenues and foreign exchange earnings. Methodological topics, primarily the data requirements of the basic model and its extensions, along with aggregation, market interaction, uncertainty, and market imperfections are discussed. The most important methodological issues - the question of the recursive property of these models - is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic models in much of the public economics literature have been slow to reflect the significant changes towards double-income households throughout the developed world. This graduate-level text develops a more sophisticated approach to household economics, one that allows for multiple-income earners and shared decision-making. This approach is used to present a fundamentally new view of consumption. It then applies this to an analysis of tax systems, combining theoretical analysis of optimal taxation and tax reform with careful empirical study of the characteristics of income tax systems in four different countries: Australia, Germany, the UK and the USA. The book is particularly concerned with analysing, both theoretically and empirically, the impact of taxation on female labour supply, and identifying its effects on work incentives and fairness of income distribution. All this adds up to a fascinating new approach to the economics of household for researchers in both public and private sectors.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a household production function model for the production of health and education of the children in the household. The model assumes that a household derives utility from the children in the household being healthy and well-educated. The household produces health and education by applying a variety of inputs that include market goods like food, medicines, classes, and housing; and also non-market goods like the time of parents and other family members, and inculcating health- and education-enhancing habits in children. The model is in the tradition of Becker (1965, 1967), Ben-Porath (1967) and Grossman (1972). This model focuses on housing-related inputs. These inputs include the physical characteristics of the dwelling, neighborhood characteristics, and housing mobility (or locational stability). Housing expenditures play a role in the demand for inputs because they form a large share of the family's budget, and affect the residual income available to purchase other inputs. The paper explores the relevant empirical literature (in housing economics and policy, health economics, sociology, education, public health, and medicine) to highlight salient findings on the connections between housing-related inputs and children's health and education. Finally, the paper suggests strategies for estimating household production function models of children's health and education with a focus on housing-related inputs.

Book excerpt: Although the number of immigrant households in the Netherlands is substantial, the labor supply choices of this group are usually neglected in empirical studies because these households are usually under-sampled. We use a stratified sample of Turkish, Surinamese/Antillean and Dutch households that enables us to discuss how two-earner households allocate their time to different activities. In order to do so, we empirically estimate a collective household labor supply model. The main findings are that: (1) Leisure and household income are the most important variables in the utility function of the male. (2) Leisure, total household production and total household production interacted with family size are important variables in the utility function of the female. The latter two are especially important for Turkish and Surinamese/Antillean females. (3) The utility of Turkish and Dutch males weighs slightly more than the utility of the partner in the household utility function. For Surinamese/Antillean families we find the opposite. (4) Utility weighting depends on the presence of children and on the hourly wage rates of both partners. (5) The labor supply curve is forward bending for both male and female in terms of their own wage. The labor supply curve is backward bending for both male and female in terms of the partners wage. We find this for all household types. (6) The presence of (more) children reduces the hours of labor supplied by women and increases the number of hours supplied by men.

Book excerpt: This article develops a two-stage collective household production model for household food expenditures, parental time allocation, and childhood overweight. The model fills four gaps in the literature: (i) the “black box” treatment of intrahousehold decision making, (ii) exclusion of the child's decision input, (iii) exclusion of noneconomic variables, and (iv) absence of theory-supported instrument identification. The traditional unitary household production model with children is a special case of the model developed. Using a unique data set, the unitary model is rejected. There are important differences in the policy implications to be drawn from both models based on the data set used.

It covers both theory, from the initial 'unitary' model that postulates that the family behaves as a single decision maker, to modern 'collective' approaches that concentrates on differences in preferences and power relationships and empirical applications. Including an original Introduction by the Editors, a special emphasis is placed on dynamic approaches, in particular issues related to intra-household commitment, and on policy implications.
