Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Türckische Cammer once owned by the Electors of Saxony is one of the most important collections of its kind worldwide. Unlike the so-called 'Turkish Booty' of the late 17th century, the Electors amassed an exotic collection over several centuries that had little to do with the looting engaged in by Saxon troops on campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Much more important for this collection, which goes back to the 16th century, were diplomatic presents, an active acquisitions policy and works executed on commission. With the re-opening of the Türckische Cammer after a lapse of nearly seventy years, Dresden has gained another world-class museum to complement the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and the Green Vault. In a survey of the collection, which is, of course, much larger, the catalogue showcases fifty choice pieces from the Ottoman period, featuring costumes, showy weapons and exquisite oriental equestrian accoutrements.

Book excerpt: Born in Gyffin, near Conway, Wales, John Gibson (1790-1866) moved with his family to Liverpool, where he trained as a cabinet-maker and mason. The historian and banker William Roscoe whetted Gibson's appetite for classical statuary, and provided him with a scholarship and funds to visit Rome. Gibson arrived in the city in 1817 and entered the workshop of Europe's pre-eminent sculptor: Antonio Canova. Soon acclaimed in his own right, Gibson remained in the city until his death in 1866. Contact with artists and patrons on the Grand Tour ensured lasting links with Britain, and this publication highlights Gibson's sculptures in such collections as the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, Parliament and the Royal Collection. Gibson bequeathed to the Royal Academy drawings, plasters and sculptures, as well as correspondences, accounts and notebooks; some reproduced here for the first time. AUTHOR: Anna Rath has recently completed a doctorate on the subject of Gibson in Rome at the University of Vienna. Annette Wickham is Curator of Works on Paper at the Royal Academy. She is co-author of 'Daniel Maclise: The Waterloo Cartoon' (RA Publications). SELLLNG POINTS: * Examines the work of the Victorian era's most celebrated, yet often overlooked, sculptor * Describes Gibson's time in the workshop of Canova, the greatest of Neoclassical artists, and in the Eternal city * This volume uses letters, plaster reliefs, marbles, drawings, notebooks and objects to present a comprehensive account 50 colour

Book excerpt: "Peasant festival imagery began in sixteenth-century Nuremberg, when the city played host to a series of religious and secular festivals. The peasant festival images were first produced as woodcut prints in the decade between 1524 and 1535 by Sebald Beham. These peasant festival prints show celebrating in a variety of ways including dancing, eating and drinking, and playing games. In Before Bruegel, Alison Stewart takes a fresh look at these images and explores them within their historical and cultural contexts, including the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation into the town's institutions and the accompanying re-evaluation of the town's popular festivals. Stewart goes beyond the black-and-white approaches of previous interpretations, to examine the festival prints in a more complex manner. In the first publication of its kind, Stewart makes the case for a range of meanings these works held for a sixteenth-century audience and for Beham's pictorial inventiveness and his business savvy. Beham is credited with inventing the subject of peasant festivals in Northern Renaissance art and for creating a market for the subject by the middle of the sixteenth century, with his large-scale woodcuts at Nuremberg and with tiny engravings at Frankfurt. Stewart shows that the market Beham created for prints with the theme of peasant festivals paved the way for Pieter Bruegel's Netherlandish paintings of the same theme, dating but a few years later."--Provided by publisher.
