Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oilseed rape, a major crop in many parts of the world, is attackedby a wide range of insect pests, many of which are of considerableeconomic importance. With the increasing demand to reduceagrochemical inputs on arable crops, the Commission of the EuropeanCommunities supported a three-year programme in which scientificparticipants reviewed the natural enemies of oilseed rape insectpests. The various outputs from this important work form the basisof this comprehensive new book. Biocontrol of Oilseed Rape Pests commences with a reviewof the oilseed rape crop, followed by chapters on pests, pestmanagement strategies and parasitoids of specific pests or groupsof pests. Detailed information is also included on sampling, trapping and rearing pests, their parasitoids and predators; theidentification of hymenopterous parasitoids; pathogens of oilseedrape pests, predators, predator taxonomy and identification, andthe impact of on-farm landscape structures and systems onpredators. This book is an essential purchase for all those involved withoilseed rape and for anyone with an interest in agriculturalbiocontrol strategies. It is also essential reading and aninvaluable source of reference for agricultural scientists, entomologists, crop protection specialists, advisers andconsultants. All agrochemical companies should have multiple copiesof this book on their shelves, as should all libraries inuniversities and research establishments where biological andagricultural sciences are studied and taught. Dr David V. Alford, based in Cambridge, UK, has manyyears of experience working as a government entomologist.

Book excerpt: These three volumes deal with the diseases of primarily cultivated annual edible oilseeds, i.e., peanut (groundnut), rapeseed-mustard, sesame, sunflower, safflower, and nigerseed. It is reliably believed that this book will be of great help not only to students, reseachers, and teachers but also to agricultural extension workers, field workers, seed growers, and seed crop inspectors, and subsequently to the farmers, to achieve the over-all objective of increase in oilseed crop yields throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Control of phoma stem canker in oil rapeseed crops typically depends on cultivars resistant to L. Maculans, the virus that causes it. Recently, virus populations have overcome resistance, causing serious canker outbreaks in Australia and Europe. There is an urgent need to find sources of resistance to L. maculans. This book synthesizes studies in management of resistance genes control L. maculans, and will stimulate further research on this important model system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present status of rapeseed-mustard crops as the third most important source of edible oils is attributable to the success of plant breeders and associate researchers in developing high yielding varieties with improved quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the need to maximize the production gains and quality at lower economic costis greater than ever before. "Breeding Oilseed Brassicas" was thus conceived to review the past accomplishments in order to identify research gaps and suggest ways and means to meet the challenge of sustainable productivity upgradation. Theoretical and applied aspects ofbreeding, genetics, cytogenetics, crop physiology, and biotechnology are covered. The emphasis is on the application of theoretical knowledge to the solution of problems that confront the Brassica breeders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one is privileged to participate long enough in a professional capacity, certain trends may be observed in the dynamics of how challenges are met or how problems are solved. Agricultural research is no exception in view of how the plant sciences have moved forward in the past 30 years. For example, the once grand but now nearly forgotten art of whole plant physiology has given way almost completely to the more sophisticated realm of molecular biology. What once was the American Society of Plant Physiologists’ is now the American Society of Plant Molecular Biology; a democratic decision to indemnify efforts to go beyond the limits of the classical science and actually begin to understand the underlying biological basis for genetic regulation of metabolic mechanisms in plants. Yet, as new technologies open windows of light on the inner workings of biological processes, one might reminisce with faint nostalgia on days long past when the artisans of plant physiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and other scientific disciplines ebbed and waned in prominence. No intentional reference is made here regarding Darwinism; the plant sciences always have been extremely competitive. Technology is pivotal. Those who develop and/or implement innovative concepts typically are regarded as leaders in their respective fields. Each positive incremental step helps bring recognition and the impetus to push a scientific discipline forward with timely approaches to address relevant opportunities.

Book excerpt: This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar on 'Production and Utilization of Protein in Oilsead Crops', held at Braunschweig from 8 to 10 July, 1980. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, as part of the EEC Common Research Programme on Plant Protein Improvement. Methods for the intensive production of meat and milk have been adopted to an increasing extent in EEC coun±ries over the past two decades, their success is based on animal diets of high quality, balanced for energy and protein contents. The substantial improvements in cereal yields in EEC over this period has kept pace with the increasing demand for dietary energy in concentrated animal foodstuffs, but provision of the necessary protein supplementation has required ever-increasing imports of soybean products. Grain legumes and oilseed meals are the two main sources of concentrated protein for the animal feeds industry, and there is an urgent need for increased EEC production of both. Seminars on grain legumes have been held at regular intervals since 1976; the meeting at Braunschweig, now reported, was the first to consider in detail the potential contribution from oilseed crops suitable for EEC conditions. Local arrangements for the seminar were made by Professor Dr. M. Dambroth, Dr. C. Sommer, and their colleagues at the Institut fUr Pflanzenbau und Pflanzenzuchtung, Braunschweig - Volkenr6de.
