Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oft Told Tales Retold "Prove all things, hold fast to that which is good." These stories were taken from the Holy (?) Bible - at least that was on the cover. The object in treating them in every-day language is not to make light of sacred things, or to destroy any one's faith in the All-Good, but to discover truth and if possible to tear away the mantle of hypocrisy that covers with a "Thus saith the Lord" the most unspeakable atrocities in history. I have endeavored to keep as close to the text as possible, barring the few comments, and I think I have treated the subjects with as much reverence as they inspire. The stories in themselves are quite interesting and I trust the reader will leave out that unction that usually attaches itself to the mind on reading the scriptures, and for once, give his mind freedom to act, letting these stories take pot-luck with others of a fictitious character. I do not believe for one moment that the Great First Cause is identical with the Jewish Jehovah who in these stories is endowed with a character a decent man would scorn to possess; whose very name was jealousy (Exodus 34:14), and who was green with jealousy most of the time, who would fly in a passion at the drop of a hat and kill some innocent person to get even with the guilty (Josh. 7:5-24). Its aim has been to tell some oft told stories in a form likely to attract those who are not yet of an age to study the larger classical works on the subjects chosen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twice-Told Tales, Vol. 2 of 2 Ambling on foot in the spring of my 5 a life and the summer of the year, I came one afternoon to a point which gave me the choice of three directions. Straight bemre me, the main road extended its dusty length to Boston; on the left a. Branch went towards the sea, and would have lengthened my journey a tri fle, of twenty or thirty miles while, by the right hand path, I might have gone over hills and lakes to Canada, visiting in my way the celebrated town of Stamford. On a level spot of grass, at the foot of the guide-post, appeared an object, which, though locomotive on a different principle, reminded me of Gulliver's portable mansion among the Brobdig nags. It was a huge covered wagon, or more pmperly, a small' house on wheels, with a door on one side and a window shaded by green blinds on the other. Two horses, munching provender out of the baskets which muzzled them, were fastened near the vehicle a delectable sound of music pro ceeded from the interior; and I immediately con. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories to Tell the Littlest Ones Gradually other loves have taken their place in the home-story world, and I have told my boy and girl many tales of many kinds, true, fairy, and foolish, as they call humorous stories, but they still love the one that begins with Peter Rabbit. Once in a while, in the long series Of days, some happy inspiration has given me a better thought than usual, and a real story has popped out of my mouth in place of the mediocre inventions of habit. These few real stories have been retold by request of the original audience, and told again to larger audiences many times. It has seemed to me that the best of them might prove of value to other teach ers and mothers of very, little children, for the demand is continuous, and the sup ply of material suitable for such tiny hearers is exceedingly small.
