Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent history of one of South Carolina's historically black colleges and its significant role in the civil rights movement Since its founding in 1896, South Carolina State University has provided vocational, undergraduate, and graduate education for generations of African Americans. Now the state's flagship historically black university, it achieved this recognition after decades of struggling against poverty, inadequate infrastructure and funding, and social and cultural isolation. In South Carolina State University: A Black Land-Grant College in Jim Crow America, William C. Hine examines South Carolina State's complicated start, its slow and long-overdue transition to a degree-granting university, and its significant role in advancing civil rights in the state and country. A product of the state's "separate but equal" legislation, South Carolina State University was a hallmark of Jim Crow South Carolina. Black and white students were indeed provided separate colleges, but the institutions were in no way equal. When established, South Carolina State emphasized vocational and agricultural subjects as well as teacher training for black students while the University of South Carolina offered white students a broad range of higher-level academic and professional course work leading to a bachelor's degree. Through the middle decades of the twentieth century, South Carolina State was an incubator for much of the civil rights activity in the state. The tragic Orangeburg massacre on February 8, 1968, occurred on its campus and resulted in the deaths of three students and the wounding of twenty-eight others. Using the university as a lens, Hine examines the state's history of race relations, poverty and progress, and the politics of higher education for whites and blacks from the Reconstruction era into the twenty-first century. Hine's work showcases what the institution has achieved as well as what was required for the school to achieve the parity it was once promised. This fascinating account is replete with revealing anecdotes, more than sixty photographs and illustrations, and a cast of famous figures including Benjamin R. Tillman, Coleman Blease, Benjamin E. Mays, Marian Birnie Wilkinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, Modjeska Simkins, Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington Williams, James F. Byrnes, John Foster Dulles, James E. Clyburn, and Willie Jeffries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever dreamed, or had a fantasy about owning a sports franchise? This is a compelling story about the author's journey through his American dream. His story covers the years 1979 to 1983, during which he successfully acquired a professional indoor soccer team franchise in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), with no money down, and how he subsequently lost it. The author has a practical leveraging method, which when used, can be applied to buying or acquiring any business. He clearly and simply lays out those guidelines. This is a story of a working man's desire and how he figured out how to initially get a franchise funded with other people's money (OPM). And, after funding, to market it successfully against other established and popular sport leagues, then only to see how quickly it vanished. Guidelines to the steps to acquiring a sports franchise are laid out. The birth of the author's dream begins in 1979, while vacationing on the beautiful island of Virgin Gorda. In Chapter 1 we are exposed to his vision, which at this time is nothing more than a pipe dream. Guidelines to acquiring a franchise are laid out in Chapter 2. The game plan is developed and strategies unfurled. Once awarded the franchise, he must raise the funds to sustain the franchise and operational costs. In Chapter 3 he develops step by step instructions on how to legally structure the deal, to entice investors and to learn about funding. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 give us detailed insights about the inner workings of a sports franchise How to organize How to staff How to market the dream And, how to acquire players These chapters are a must for all sports marketers, sports educators and entrepreneurs. Chapter 7 sweeps us into the cacophony of a major indoor sporting event. The media coverage is outlined in Chapter 8. We commiserate with the author as he describes the demise of his dream in Chapter 9 and how he rises from the ashes in the final chapter. From Chapter 7: "Imagine if you can, sitting in a luxurious and darkened indoor arena at game time waiting for your team to be introduced for the first time. The playing field is a plush, emerald green, fast-track surface. Suddenly, flashing strobe lights appear, swirling their multicolored beams around the arena. Then, deafening music starts playing You feel your adrenalin rising and you are getting into the magic. Unexpectedly, a spotlight appears at one end of the arena. The light is focused on one of the goals, and it and the surrounding area is engulfed in artificial fog...". It's game time

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitting atop Mount Oread, the University of Kansas stands as a monument to the determination of the state's earliest settlers to build for the future. As a "city on a hill," the university has also mirrored both American society's hopes and its fears—and never has this been truer than over the past five decades. Transforming the University of Kansas chronicles the many accomplishments and the daunting challenges that marked the last half-century at the University. On the eve of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the school's founding, this book reflects upon the people, politics, and developments that have transformed KU since 1965, making it the distinctive institution of higher learning that it is today. Like major universities across the country, Kansas became a global research institution in these years, a leader in academic inquiry and scholarly expertise. It also experienced a wrenching process of change following student protests demanding greater rights and recognition. The authors—all experts from KU's faculty or staff—focus on particular aspects of the era, documenting major changes that occurred and introducing key leaders. Organized in three broad categories—leadership and politics; teaching and research; and students, protest, and sports—these essays draw upon a wealth of archival material, including interviews and yearbooks, student publications, and alumni sources, to create a full and richly textured picture of growth and change over five decades. These essays detail the school's transformation from a bucolic college into a sprawling university, capturing the personalities and spirit of each of the eight chancellors who have guided KU through these challenging times. The essays describe innovations in learning, from the liberal arts through international studies and graduate research. And they reveal the changing character of student life in curricular and extra-curricular activities, in campus activism, scholarship, and athletics. Together the essays comprise a living portrait of the university, broad in scope and vivid in detail, growing and adapting to a rapidly changing world, prepared to meet the challenges of the new century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basketball fans at the University of New Mexico have always been loyal, loud, and numerous, and the devotees have grown in number over the fifty years since the opening of the University Arena, a.k.a. the Pit, in 1966. Herron recounts many of the best players and games in this celebration of one of the best-known facilities in the United States. With almost two hundred color photographs, this illustrative explosion shows you the players, the plays, the coaches, and the sold-out crowds dressed in red. You can recall the colorful nicknames: Petie Gibson, Marvin “Automatic” Johnson, and, of course, “Stormin’ Norman” Ellenberger. This stunning work also contains extensive statistics that will not disappoint—like who took the Lobos to the most postseason contests. Herron does not overlook women’s basketball, a standout sport at UNM, nor does he omit the great non-UNM entertainment that has happened at the Pit: the NMAA state high school basketball tournament, the Gathering of Nations, boxing matches, bull riding, concerts, and more.

Book excerpt: This book examines the development of television in India since the early 1990s, and its implications for Indian society more widely. Until 1991, India possessed only a single state-owned television channel, but since then there has been a rapid expansion in independent satellite channels which came as a complete break from the statist control of the past. This book explores this transformation, explaining how television, a medium that developed in the industrial West, was adapted to suit Indian conditions, and in turn has altered Indian social practices, making possible new ways of imagining identities, conducting politics and engaging with the state. In particular, satellite television initially came to India as the representative of global capitalism but it was appropriated by Indian entrepreneurs and producers who Indianized it. Considering the full gamut of Indian television - from "national" networks in English and Hindi to the state of regional language networks – this book elucidates the transformative impact of television on a range of important social practices, including politics and democracy, sport and identity formation, cinema and popular culture. Overall, it shows how the story of television in India is also the story of India's encounter with the forces of globalisation.
