Book Synopsis Students, Markets and Social Justice by : Hubert Ertl
Download or read book Students, Markets and Social Justice written by Hubert Ertl and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines tuition fees as the most prominent and most visible trend among higher education policies that embodies recent neoliberal trends in the policy area of education. Tuition fee policies and the accompanying provisions for student support illustrate the contemporary tensions between marketisation and social justice. Among the major transformations higher education systems have undergone in the last two decades, the emergence of marketisation, and in particular the introduction of tuition fees, have received a lot of attention. In Europe, these trends seemingly break with a long-dominant representation of higher education as a public good, which has been at the centre of the process of massification of higher education access in most European countries since the 1960s. Against this background, the volume examines recent changes in tuition fee policies in a number of western European countries, Canada, the United States and China, and investigates the impacts of these changes on access to higher education. There are two main contributions the volume makes: first, it provides an overview of recent reforms in a comparative perspective, including a diverse range of national contexts; second, it elaborates a systematic analysis of tuition fee policies’ rationales, instruments and outcomes in terms of access to higher education. The volume argues that tuition fee policies provide fruitful grounds to explore the variety of neoliberal trends in higher education, that is, how marketisation and concerns regarding social justice are intertwined in contemporary higher education systems.

Book Synopsis Cultural Impact on Conflict Management in Higher Education by : Nancy T. Watson
Download or read book Cultural Impact on Conflict Management in Higher Education written by Nancy T. Watson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Impact on Conflict Management in Higher Education shares information regarding conflict management and resolution in higher education from a global perspective. In this book, we introduced many conflict resolution methods from different regions in the world. You can borrow some successful strategies and examine the differences and similarities between contexts. The book shares a conflict resolution model which may direct the reader to start thinking about addressing and managing conflicts from different levels of organizations. This book is a collective work of authors coming from all over the world. We chose higher education as the context because it is a place where diverse thoughts, perspectives, and people come together. Because of the potential richness of diversity on a college campus, the opportunity for conflicts occurs. Managing conflict does not work when there is a “one-way only approach/model” for addressing conflict. Some conflict resolution encompasses multiple dimensions: (a) one’s personal beliefs or beliefs about an issue; (b) an individual’s personal history in terms of how the conflict was perceived as something to be discussed or not; (c) work culture of the conflict where if ‘one has a conflict,’ the person or unit is messing up or there is a problem person; (d) the unconscious strategies of ‘face saving’ (trying to maintain one’s image) present; (e) social hierarchies or relationships; and (f) the diversity dimensions and issues that may be present.

This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the problems that have developed as students lack either the social or cultural capital to take the opportunity of Higher Education through conventional routes. This might be due to leaving school early, lacking entry qualifications or wanting to further their education and prospects after entering the workplace. Foundation courses help to widen participation and create a route towards higher education. This book offers tried and tested practical solutions, from the notion of widening participation, to recruitment of students and to ways of helping them to make the most of themselves and develop the skills they need to progress on degree courses of their choice.
