Book excerpt: Bluff-body wakes play an important role in many fluid dynamics problems and engineering applications. This book gives and up-to-date account of recent results obtained in the study of bluff-body wakes. Experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches are all comprehensively covered and compared. Topics of particular interest include hydrodynamic instability analyses, three-dimensional pattern formation problems, flow control methods, bifurcation analyses, numerical simulations and turbulence modelling. The main originality of thisvolume is that recent conceptual advances made to describe nonlinear phenomena in general are put to the test on a classical problem in fundamental fluid mechanics, namely the wake structure generated behind a bluff object.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various passive and active techniques for controlling unsteady flow dynamics and associated coupled mechanics of fluid-structure interaction. Coupled multiphysics and multidomain simulations are emerging and challenging research areas, which have received significant attention during the past decade. One of the most common multiphysics and multidomain problems is fluid-structure interaction (FSI), i.e., the study of coupled physical systems involving fluid and a structure that have a mechanical influence on each other. Regardless of the application area, the investigation toward modeling of fluid-structure interaction and the underlying mechanisms in dealing with coupled fluid-structure instability with real-world applications remains a challenge to scientists and engineers. This book is designed for students and researchers who seek knowledge of computational modeling and control strategies for fluid-structure interaction. Specifically, this book provides a comprehensive review of the underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction of freely vibrating bluff bodies, the self-induced flapping of thin flexible structures, and aeroelasticity of shell structures. Understanding flow-induced loads and vibrations can lead to safer and cost-effective structures, especially for light and high-aspect ratio structures with increased flexibility and harsh environmental conditions. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios, Reynolds number, nonlinear structural deformation, proximity interference, near-wall contacts, free-surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered in this book. In conjunction with the control techniques, data-driven model reduction approaches based on subspace projection and deep neural calculus are covered for low-dimensional modeling of unsteady fluid-structure interaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering technology is of crucial importance to the infrastructure on which modern societies depend, and keeping abreast of the latest research and developments in the field is of vital importance. This book presents the proceedings of HCET 2022, the 7th International Technical Conference on Frontiers of Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology, originally due to be held, in Sanya, China, from 25-27 September 2022, but instead held as a fully virtual event on Zoom due to continued uncertainty related to the Covid 19 pandemic. HCET is a platform for the dissemination of research results on the latest advances in the areas of hydraulic and civil engineering technology and environmental engineering, and provides an opportunity for scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to exchange their findings, discuss developments, and possibly establish a basis for collaboration. A total of 275 submissions were received from international contributors, and all were subjected to a rigorous peer-review process, with each paper reviewed by a minimum of two experts. Papers were also checked for quality and plagiarism, after which, 163 papers were accepted for presentation and publication. Topics covered include the research and development of concrete structure design and analysis, structural mechanics and structural engineering, geological exploration and earthquake engineering, building technology, urban planning, energy, environment and advanced engineering science and applications. The book offers a state-of-the-art overview of recent developments, and will be of interest to all those working in the fields of hydraulic and civil engineering technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the flow field associated with a highly yawed cone was conducted at a Mach number of 5 and a free-stream Reynolds number per foot of 4,400,000. Surface static pressure measurements, flow-field surveys and schlieren photographs were obtained on a sharp five-degree semi-vertex angle cone at an angle of attack of 24 degrees. The results of the measurements indicate that the flow field on the leeward side of a highly yawed cone is very similar to that of a circular cylinder in supersonic cross flow. The essential difference between these two flow fields is the presence of a disturbance from the tip of the cone which separates the gas which has passed through the shock wave on the windward side from the flow which has passed through the weaker portion of the shock wave on the leeward side of the cone. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
