Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue accompanied the first American museum retrospective of the English artist Francis Bacon. In his essay, Senior Curator Lawrence Alloway explores the essence of Bacon's painting beyond the usual associations with the grotesque. Instead, he offers a different argument: Bacon was a realist painter of his time, closely tied into the Grand Manner and painters such as Manet, Van Gogh, Velasquez, and Titian. Bacon continued and evolved the central tradition of European figure painting at a time when abstraction was dominating the art world. Also included are an exhibition checklist, 64 color and black-and-white reproductions, and a bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s were heady years in Argentina. Visual artists, curators, and critics sought to fuse art and politics; to broaden the definition of art to encompass happenings and assemblages; and, above all, to achieve international recognition for new, cutting-edge Argentine art. A bestseller in Argentina, Avant-Garde, Internationalism, and Politics is an examination of the 1960s as a brief historical moment when artists, institutions, and critics joined to promote an international identity for Argentina’s visual arts. The renowned Argentine art historian and critic Andrea Giunta analyzes projects specifically designed to internationalize Argentina’s art and avant-garde during the 1960s: the importation of exhibitions of contemporary international art, the sending of Argentine artists abroad to study, the organization of prize competitions involving prestigious international art critics, and the export of exhibitions of Argentine art to Europe and the United States. She looks at the conditions that made these projects possible—not least the Alliance for Progress, a U.S. program of “exchange” and “cooperation” meant to prevent the spread of communism through Latin America in the wake of the Cuban Revolution—as well as the strategies formulated to promote them. She describes the influence of Romero Brest, prominent art critic, supporter of abstract art, and director of the Centro de Artes Visuales del Instituto Tocuato Di Tella (an experimental art center in Buenos Aires); various group programs such as Nueva Figuración and Arte Destructivo; and individual artists including Antonio Berni, Alberto Greco, León Ferrari, Marta Minujin, and Luis Felipe Noé. Giunta’s rich narrative illuminates the contentious postwar relationships between art and politics, Latin America and the United States, and local identity and global recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography will help researchers to accurately interpret motifs in medieval art and literature. Five chapters describe overview studies and identify and briefly annotate journal articles in English and all major European languages. "Medieval Art" treats library catalogs of illuminated medieval manuscripts, and genres such as glass, sculpture, and wood carving by country. "Other Tools" covers medieval encyclopedias, preaching handbooks, and sermon and exempla collections as repositories of imagery. "The Natural World" surveys imagery of land and water animals, plants, stones, and illustrated bestiaries. "The Christian Tradition" discusses the Bible and its apocrypha, saints' legends, and material on specific biblical figures, such as the horns believed to be given Cain or Moses. "Learned Imagery" includes sections on alchemy, astrology, famous persons such as Arthur, Alexander the Great, and Roland, and mythology, both mythographic commentaries and treatments of individual myths. Finally, "Daily Life" covers topics such as medieval ideas of beauty and the body, color symbolism, costumes, feasts, and specific images like the symbolism of mirrors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hackett edition of this classic of medieval philosophy and mysticism--a plan of pilgrimage for the learned Franciscan wishing to reach the apex of the mystical experience--combines the highly regarded Boehner translation with a new introduction by Stephen Brown focusing on St. Francis as a model of the contemplative life, the meaning of the Itinerarium, its place in Bonaventure's mystical theology, and the plan of the work. Boehner's Latin Notes, as well as Latin texts from other works of Bonaventure included in the Franciscan Institute Edition, are rendered here in English, making this the edition of choice for the beginning student.
