Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question, 'Why should I obey the law?' introduces a contemporary puzzle that is as old as philosophy itself. The puzzle is especially troublesome if we think of cases in which breaking the law is not otherwise wrongful, and in which the chances of getting caught are negligible. Philosophers from Socrates to H.L.A. Hart have struggled to give reasoned support to the idea that we do have a general moral duty to obey the law but, more recently, the greater number of learned voices has expressed doubt that there is any such duty, at least as traditionally conceived. The thought that there is no such duty poses a challenge to our ordinary understanding of political authority and its legitimacy. In what sense can political officials have a right to rule us if there is no duty to obey the laws they lay down? Some thinkers, concluding that a general duty to obey the law cannot be defended, have gone so far as to embrace philosophical anarchism, the view that the state is necessarily illegitimate. Others argue that the duty to obey the law can be grounded on the idea of consent, or on fairness, or on other ideas, such as community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People obey the law if they believe it's legitimate, not because they fear punishment--this is the startling conclusion of Tom Tyler's classic study. Tyler suggests that lawmakers and law enforcers would do much better to make legal systems worthy of respect than to try to instill fear of punishment. He finds that people obey law primarily because they believe in respecting legitimate authority. In his fascinating new afterword, Tyler brings his book up to date by reporting on new research into the relative importance of legal legitimacy and deterrence, and reflects on changes in his own thinking since his book was first published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we should obey the law is a question that affects everyone’s day-to-day life, from traffic laws to taxes. Most people obey out of habit, but the question remains: why are we morally required to do so? If we fail to obey, the state may enforce compliance, but is it right for it to do this, and if so, why? In this book, George Klosko, a renowned authority on political obligation, skillfully probes these questions. He considers various prominent theories of obligation and shows why they are unconvincing, contending that only an approach that interweaves multiple principles, rooted in "fair play," is fully persuasive. Klosko develops the fullest statement of his own well-known theory of political obligation while providing a clear overview of the subject. The result is both an essential introductory text for students of political theory and philosophy and a cutting-edge, original contribution to the debate.

PURSUE (Purposefully Understanding our Risen Savior Until Eternity) takes you into the lives of biblical characters who understood the purpose that God had given them to live. The reader also gets to know characters that walked alongside Jesus after His resurrection. OBEY takes the reader into the lives of biblical characters that were obedient believers, bad decision makers, and those that showed the evidence of obedience within their lives. On the last week, the reader gets to know the author's favorite character in-depth (Jehoshaphat) to see how his life can correlate with your own. LIVE (Life in Various Experiences) breaks down the longest chapter in the Bible (Psalm 119) as it pertains to how the reader can use the Bible to live in whatever experience they may face in life. Come join Ann in this wonderful journey as we pursue Jesus, obey Jesus, and live for Jesus daily!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can it be? How can salvation be God’s gift of grace through faith and not by works; yet there are tons of Bible verses that connect eternal life directly to obedience and faithfulness? It was a great aid to me to see how both are given, and they do not conflict at all. I have written several papers to show this, and they have been helpful to a number of people. So I am enclosing these into a book form. Each paper shows in various ways how both the faith and obedience verses are valid and precious. “According to Scripture … very good … I agree with everything in it … I don’t think we will ever fully know God’s part and our part, but this is the closest I have ever seen … It is the best bridge I have seen … I feel it is a unique and much needed contribution.” (concerning Paradox). —Dr. Robertson McQuilkin, president emeritus of Columbia International University “Very thought-provoking! I’ve been aware of this Paradox, but having it presented like this highlights the grace-works elements in our faith which must be confronted. It also broadens one’s appreciation for the Word.” (concerning Paradox). —Dave Scovill, missionary, translator, missions counselor, administrator, and writer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God uses people daily to communicate His fragrance and message to us. Too often we don't check to see what aroma or impression we are leaving for others to see, hear, or smell. After visiting someone's home or before checking out of a motel, or when moving, we double check to make sure we haven't left anything behind. Even criminals check to make sure they haven't left any clues at the crime scene to identify them. A story reminded me of this. A robber thought he had committed the perfect crime. He assumed he left no clues behind. But he didn't count on someone remembering how he smelled. The smell he left behind was what helped convict him. Yes, we leave something everywhere we go. Stuart Holden reminded a young man moving from a boarding house of this fact when the young man said, he was just double checking to make sure he wasn't leaving anything behind. "There's one thing you will leave behind, young man, your influence."

Book excerpt: Andre the Giant Has a Posse is a street art campaign based on an original design by Frank Shepard Fairey created in 1989 while Fairey was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). At the time Fairey declared the campaign to be "an experiment in phenomenology." Over time the artwork has been reused in a number of ways and has become a world-wide pataphysical movement, following in the footsteps of Ivan Stang's Church of the SubGenius and populist WWII icon Kilroy Was Here. At the same time, Fairey's work has evolved stylistically and semantically into the OBEY Giant campaign. This book displays 10 years of graphic evolution - from the first photocopied "Andre the Giant" sticker that Shepard Fairey made at RISD to the giant billboard posters you see all around the world. A stunning full-colour documentation of Fairey's T `campaign' of postering and stencils It attempts to simultaneously bring the viewer to question propaganda absorption and to encourage a better use of public space.

Book excerpt: David Obey has in his nearly forty years in the U.S. House of Representatives worked to bring economic and social justice to America’s working families. In 2007 he assumed the chair of the Appropriations Committee and is positioned to pursue his priority concerns for affordable health care, education, environmental protection, and a foreign policy consistent with American democratic ideals. Here, in his autobiography, Obey looks back on his journey in politics beginning with his early years in the Wisconsin Legislature, when Wisconsin moved through eras of shifting balance between Republicans and Democrats. On a national level Obey traces, as few others have done, the dramatic changes in the workings of the U.S. Congress since his first election to the House in 1969. He discusses his own central role in the evolution of Congress and ethics reforms and his view of the recent Bush presidency—crucial chapters in our democracy, of interest to all who observe politics and modern U.S. history. Book excerpt: in the 21st century, commerce and culture are ever more closely entwined. This collection of essays by design critic Rick Poynor takes a searching look at visual culture to discover the reality beneath the ultra-seductive surfaces. Poynor explores the thinking behind the emerging resistance to commercial rhetoric among designers, and offers critical insights into the changing dialogue between advertising and design. Other essays address the topics of visual journalism; brands as religion; the new solipsism; graphic memes; the pleasures of imperfect design; and the poverty of "cool." The worldwide dominance of huge corporations is invariably expressed by visual means. This book challenges this mono-culture critically. It offers inspirational evidence of alternative ways of engaging with design, and it will appeal to any reader with a questioning interest in design, advertising, cultural studies, media studies, and the visual arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fascist regime under Mussolini regarded its youth as its best hope for the future. Young people were courted more assiduously than any other group in the society and their political socialization became a central concern of the government. Believe, Obey, Fight discusses the various tools used by the Fascist regime from 1922 to 1943 to shape the political values and environment of the young. Tracy Koon focuses on the secondary agents of socialization, including the party, the educational establishment, youth groups, and the media of political communication. She shows that the response to this socialization ranged from apparent consent to dissent and finally to open opposition. The regime employed several methods to produce consensus among the young. Koon's analysis begins with a discussion of the rhetorical style of Mussolini's message and the key political myths manipulated by his propaganda machine: fascism as continuing revolution and social justice, the glories of ancient Rome, the hygienic function of war and violence, the religious spirit of the new creed, and the omniscience of the leader. She then describes the pre-Fascist educational system, the "most Fascist" Gentile reforms of 1923, and the later revision of those reforms by zealous party men engaged in the Fascist regimentation of teachers and students and the militarization and politicization of curricula and textbooks. Equally important agents of socialization were the Fascist groups organized for young people from their earliest years through the university level, including the annual national competitions and forums in which members could express their ideas on a range of issues. The regime provided physical, military, sports, and political training to strengthen the new Fascist society. Fascist socialization did for a time create a superficial consensus by appealing to both the love of conformity that marks the very young and the economic fears that caused students to conform in the hope of jobs. But Koon argues that the regime's attempt to exert totalitarian control over the young deprived them of personal identity. As time passed, the contradictions of the regime became clearer, the chasm between Fascist rhetoric and reality more obvious. In the end, the majority of young people came to believe that the regime had given them nothing to believe in, no one to obey, and nothing for which to fight. Originally published in 1985.
