Book excerpt: The Origin of Species Charles Darwin The origin of turbulence in fluids is a long-standing problem and has been the focus of research for decades due to its great importance in a variety of engineering applications. Furthermore, the study of the origin of turbulence is part of the fundamental physical problem of turbulence description and the philosophical problem of determinism and chaos. At the end of the nineteenth century, Reynolds and Rayleigh conjectured that the reason of the transition of laminar flow to the 'sinuous' state is in stability which results in amplification of wavy disturbances and breakdown of the laminar regime. Heisenberg (1924) was the founder of linear hydrody namic stability theory. The first calculations of boundary layer stability were fulfilled in pioneer works of Tollmien (1929) and Schlichting (1932, 1933). Later Taylor (1936) hypothesized that the transition to turbulence is initi ated by free-stream oscillations inducing local separations near wall. Up to the 1940s, skepticism of the stability theory predominated, in particular due to the experimental results of Dryden (1934, 1936). Only the experiments of Schubauer and Skramstad (1948) revealed the determining role of insta bility waves in the transition. Now it is well established that the transition to turbulence in shear flows at small and moderate levels of environmental disturbances occurs through development of instability waves in the initial laminar flow. In Chapter 1 we start with the fundamentals of stability theory, employing results of the early studies and recent advances.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with mathematical modelling of supersonic and hyper sonic flows about bodies. Permanent interest in this topic is stimulated, first of all, by aviation and aerospace engineering. The designing of aircraft and space vehicles requires a more precise prediction of the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics. Together with broadening of the flight condition range, this makes it necessary to take into account a number of gas dynamic and physical effects caused by rarefaction, viscous-inviscid interaction, separation, various physical and chemical processes induced by gas heating in the intensive bow shock wave. The flow field around a body moving at supersonic speed can be divided into three parts, namely, shock layer, near wake including base flow, and far wake. The shock layer flow is bounded by the bow shock wave and the front and lat eral parts of the body surface. A conventional approach to calculation of shock layer flows consists in a successive solution of the inviscid gas and boundary layer equations. When the afore-mentioned effects become important, implementation of these models meets difficulties or even becomes impossible. In this case, one has to use a more general approach based on the viscous shock layer concept.
Book Synopsis Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow by : Alexander J. Smits
Download or read book Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow written by Alexander J. Smits and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.
Book Synopsis Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions by : Holger Babinsky
Download or read book Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of turbulence encountered in coastal and civil engineering. The primary aim of the book is to describe turbulence processes including transition to turbulence; mean and fluctuating flows in channels/pipes, and in currents; wave boundary layers (including boundary layers under solitary waves); streaming processes in wave boundary layers; turbulence processes in breaking waves including breaking solitary waves; turbulence processes such as bursting process and their implications for sediment transport; flow resistance in steady and wave boundary layers; and turbulent diffusion and dispersion processes in the coastal and river environment, including sediment transport due to diffusion/dispersion.Both phenomenological and statistical theories are described in great detail. Turbulence modelling is also described, and several examples for modelling of turbulence in steady flow and wave boundary layers are presented. The book ends with a chapter containing hands-on exercises on a wide variety of turbulent flows including experimental study of turbulence in an open-channel flow, using Laser Doppler Anemometry; Statistical, correlation and spectral analysis of turbulent air jet flow; Turbulence modelling of wave boundary layer flows; and numerical modelling of dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer, a set of exercises used by the authors in their Masters classes over many years.Although the book is essentially intended for professionals and researchers in the area of Coastal and Civil Engineering, and as a text book for graduate/post graduate students, the contents of the book will, however, additionally provide sufficient background in the study of turbulent flows relevant to many other disciplines, such as Wind Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.
Book Synopsis Wave-induced Perturbations in a Turbulent Boundary Layer Over Progressive Water Waves by : Hsi Yen Yu
Download or read book Wave-induced Perturbations in a Turbulent Boundary Layer Over Progressive Water Waves written by Hsi Yen Yu and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structures of the wave-induced perturbations in a turbulent boundary layer over a mechanically generated monochromatic wave-train were experimentally investigated. Both the amplitude and phase of the wave-induced pressure and the two wave-induced velocity components were studied. The wave-induced Reynolds stress and the power input were computed. The magnitude of each term in the governing energy-balance equation was evaluated through the measured values. It was found that each of the wave-induced pressure and velocity components has certain phase and amplitude distribtuion with respect to the distance from the wave surface. Each also varies with the ratio of the mean wind speed and the wave celerity. An effort was made to evaluate the integral energy balance equation through the experimental data. Download or read book The Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Boundary Layers and Film Cooling written by Kunlun Liu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new finite volume algorithm has been developed to solve a variety of flows by using large eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation. This finite volume algorithm was developed using a dual time stepping approach with a preconditioning technique and a new factorization implementation. The method takes the advantage of pressure based and density-based methods. Thus, it provides an efficient way to numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations at the low Mach numbers. Meanwhile, to generate the inflow conditions for the simulation of turbulent boundary layers, a dynamic recycling method was proposed. In addition, a characteristic boundary condition method was suggested for the outlet boundary conditions of external wall shear flows. The implementation of the methods was validated by obtaining solutions to a number of flows including turbulent boundary layers with or without heat transfer, turbulent boundary layers subjected to free stream turbulence, and supersonic adiabatic turbulent boundary layers. Good agreement between the present results and benchmark results in the literature was achieved. With the new numerical method and boundary condition technique it is possible to investigate the statistics of turbulence with greater accuracy. Thus, the fluid physics of three different turbulent boundary layers are discussed. These are a turbulent boundary layer without heat transfer, a turbulent boundary layer on a heated wall, and an adiabatic supersonic turbulent boundary layer at Mach number 1.8. The incompressible turbulent boundary layer study focused on the two-point correlation and the anisotropy. The compressible turbulent boundary layers study, that is, the low Mach number turbulent boundary layer with strong heat transfer and the supersonic turbulent boundary layer, is concerned with the strong Reynolds analogy, Van Driest transformation, and the applicability of Morkovin's hypothesis. Large eddy simulation is applied to an example discrete hole film cooling configuration. The computational domain included the coolant supply tube as well as the main mixing region. A tube L/D of 8 and an injection angle of 35 degrees was employed for two different simulations: one was with a blowing ratio of 0.5, and the other was with a blowing ratio of 0.362.
