Book Synopsis Determination and Use of Scaling Factors for Waste Characterization in Nuclear Power Plants by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Determination and Use of Scaling Factors for Waste Characterization in Nuclear Power Plants written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication will assist Member States with the formation and implementation of efficient strategies for safe and cost effective classification and disposal of nuclear wastes. By exploiting the benefits of the scaling factor (SF) method of waste characterization, waste management professionals can facilitate the processing of larger quantities of heterogeneous radioactive waste. Whereas before, the complexity of quantifying difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclides within sealed waste packages frustrated the efficient management of their disposal, the new SF methodology exploits known quantifiable ratios of DTM to easy-to-measure (ETM) nuclides so as to facilitate radioactive waste processing. This publication contains guidance and case studies from Member States where the technique has been successfully deployed, and provides an essential and effective complement to the recently published ISO standard 21238:2007 on the same topic.
Book Synopsis Restricted Data by : Alex Wellerstein
Download or read book Restricted Data written by Alex Wellerstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nuclear weapons, since their conception, have been the subject of secrecy. In the months after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the American scientific establishment, the American government, and the American public all wrestled with what was called the "problem of secrecy," wondering not only whether secrecy was appropriate and effective as a means of controlling this new technology but also whether it was compatible with the country's core values. Out of a messy context of propaganda, confusion, spy scares, and the grave counsel of competing groups of scientists, what historian Alex Wellerstein calls a "new regime of secrecy" was put into place. It was unlike any other previous or since. Nuclear secrets were given their own unique legal designation in American law ("restricted data"), one that operates differently than all other forms of national security classification and exists to this day. Drawing on massive amounts of declassified files, including records released by the government for the first time at the author's request, Restricted Data is a narrative account of nuclear secrecy and the tensions and uncertainty that built as the Cold War continued. In the US, both science and democracy are pitted against nuclear secrecy, and this makes its history uniquely compelling and timely"--

Download or read book Observation of Nuclear Scaling in the A(e, E') Reaction at X{sub B}] 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ratios of inclusive electron scattering cross sections of 4He, 12C, and 56Fe to 3He have been measured for the first time. It is shown that these ratios are independent of xB at Q2> 1.4 GeV2 for xB> 1.5, where the inclusive cross section depends primarily on the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. The observed scaling shows that the momentum distributions at high-momenta have the same shape for all nuclei and differ only by a scale factor. The observed onset of the scaling at Q2> 1.4 GeV2 and xB> 1.5 is consistent with the kinematical expectation that two-nucleon short range correlations (SRC) dominate the nuclear wave function at pm300 MeV/c. The values of these ratios in the scaling region can be related to the relative probabilities of SRC in nuclei with A3. Our data, combined with calculations and other measurements of the 3He/deuterium ratio, demonstrate that for nuclei with A12 these probabilities are 4.9-5.9 times larger than in deuterium, while for 4He it is larger by a factor of about 3.8.
Book Synopsis Transformations for Scaling of Close-in Pressures from Nuclear Explosions by : D. Lehto
Download or read book Transformations for Scaling of Close-in Pressures from Nuclear Explosions written by D. Lehto and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents scaling methods for pressure -distance curves for a simplified model of a nuclear explosion. It is found that different scaling variables are useful in different regimes, one set yielding a single dimensionless curve in the close-in region, while another set yields a single curve in the limit of large distances. These scaling methods are exact for an ideal gas, except for deviations caused by the second shock. For real air, additional discrepancies are introduced but the scaling is still sufficiently accurate to be useful. (Author).
Book Synopsis Modeling and Control of a Large Nuclear Reactor by : S R Shimjith
Download or read book Modeling and Control of a Large Nuclear Reactor written by S R Shimjith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control analysis and design of large nuclear reactors requires a suitable mathematical model representing the steady state and dynamic behavior of the reactor with reasonable accuracy. This task is, however, quite challenging because of several complex dynamic phenomena existing in a reactor. Quite often, the models developed would be of prohibitively large order, non-linear and of complex structure not readily amenable for control studies. Moreover, the existence of simultaneously occurring dynamic variations at different speeds makes the mathematical model susceptible to numerical ill-conditioning, inhibiting direct application of standard control techniques. This monograph introduces a technique for mathematical modeling of large nuclear reactors in the framework of multi-point kinetics, to obtain a comparatively smaller order model in standard state space form thus overcoming these difficulties. It further brings in innovative methods for controller design for systems exhibiting multi-time-scale property, with emphasis on three-time-scale systems.

Book Synopsis Multi-Physics and Multi-Scale Modeling and Simulation Methods for Nuclear Reactor Application by : Xingjie Peng
Download or read book Multi-Physics and Multi-Scale Modeling and Simulation Methods for Nuclear Reactor Application written by Xingjie Peng and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nuclear reactor operates in an environment where complex multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena exist, and it requires consideration of coupling among neutronics, thermal hydraulics, fuel performance, chemical dynamics, and coupling between the reactor core and first circuit. Safe, reliable, and economical operation can be achieved by leveraging high-fidelity numerical simulation, and proper considerations for coupling among different physics and required to provide powerful numerical simulation tools. In the past simplistic models for some of the physics phenomena are used, with the recent development of advanced numerical methods, software design, and high-performance computing power, the appeal of multi-physics and multi-scale modeling and simulation has been broadened.
