Book Synopsis An Archaeology of the English Atlantic World, 1600 – 1700 by : Charles E. Orser, Jr.
Download or read book An Archaeology of the English Atlantic World, 1600 – 1700 written by Charles E. Orser, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Archaeology of the British Atlantic World, 1600–1700 is the first book to apply the methods of modern-world archaeology to the study of the seventeenth-century English colonial world. Charles E. Orser, Jr explores a range of material evidence of daily life collected from archaeological excavations throughout the Atlantic region, including England, Ireland, western Africa, Native North America, and the eastern United States. He considers the archaeological record together with primary texts by contemporary writers. Giving particular attention to housing, fortifications, delftware, and stoneware, Orser offers new interpretations for each type of artefact. His study demonstrates how the archaeological record expands our understanding of the Atlantic world at a critical moment of its expansion, as well as to the development of the modern, Western world.
Book Synopsis An Agricultural Testament by : Albert Howard
Download or read book An Agricultural Testament written by Albert Howard and published by Distant Mirror. This book was released on 2021-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is there a cow on the front cover of this book? This is a book about agriculture, and farm animals have become unfashionable in some quarters. Cows, it turns out, are responsible for global warming, climate change, and so, no doubt, rising sea levels and chemtrails. But any real farmer, from any time in history, knows that this is not true. Animals have been around forever. Animals are a vital part of an insanely complex living system. Anyone who knows the basics of regenerative agriculture understands this. Albert Howard spent years studying and using the methods of traditional Asian agriculture, and shows in this book that the fertility and health of the soil depend on humus, in the production of which animal materials play an vital role. A healthy soil needs animal inputs. Animals in agriculture are central; they're right in there with fungi. This message is not welcomed by those who would feed the modern world a diet of plant-based, lab-grown food substitutes that have lists of ingredients as long as your arm, and are going to save the planet using gene-spliced soybeans and 3D printed pizzas. So, the cow and her calf are on the cover to redress the balance, and also to feature as one of the stars of this book (along with sugar cane, waste pits, and public servants). She was the photogenic one. Albert Howard's text has been thoroughly re-edited in this new version of his book. The habit, common at the time, of using long paragraphs is not preferred by modern readers, so the text has been extensively 'reparagraphed'. Grammar has been tweaked, and styles have been adopted. Headings have been added, infinitives unsplit. The changes made have been to make things more comfortable for modern eyes and tastes. The sense and intention of the author has not been altered at all, of course. We hope that Albert Howard would approve of this reworking of his book. His ideas are more important than ever. Wendell Berry wrote in The Last Whole Earth Catalog "Howard's discoveries and methods, and their implications, are given in detail in An Agricultural Testament. They are of enormous usefulness to gardeners and farmers, and to anyone who may be interested in the history and the problems of land use. But aside from its practical worth, Howard's book is valuable for his ability to place his facts and insights within the perspective of history. This book is a critique of civilisations, judging them not by their artefacts and victories, but by their response to the sacred duty of handing over to the next generation, unimpaired, the heritage of a fertile soil."
Book Synopsis The Grim Reaper's road map by : Shaw, Mary
Download or read book The Grim Reaper's road map written by Shaw, Mary and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive full-colour atlas, with over 100 colour-coded and accessible maps, uniquely presents the geography of death in Britain. The first atlas published on this subject for over two decades, this book presents data from more than 14 million deaths over a 24-year period in Britain. The maps detail over 100 separate categories of cause of death, including various cancers, suicides, assault by firearms, multiple sclerosis, pneumonia, hypothermia, falls, and Parkinson's disease, and show how often these occurred in different neighbourhoods. Accompanying each map is a detailed description and brief geographical analysis - the number of people who have died due to each cause, the average age of death and ratio of male to female deaths are listed. Taken as a whole, these provide a comprehensive overview of the geographical pattern of mortality in Britain. This atlas will be essential reading for academics and students of social medicine, sociology of health and illness and epidemiology. It will also be valuable for anyone who wants a better understanding of patterns of mortality within Britain, including medical and healthcare practitioners, policy makers and researchers.
Book Synopsis Firearms Control by : Colin Greenwood
Download or read book Firearms Control written by Colin Greenwood and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972 Firearms Control is the result of research carried out at the Cambridge University Institute of Criminology, looks at the various problems involved in firearms control. Chief Inspector Greenwood, a serving police officer, makes use, in his investigation of the problem, of fascinating material not previously published or largely forgotten. He reveals massive and dangerous shortcomings in the official statistics, and his detailed and original findings show how badly the problem has been misunderstood. He examines closely current legislation and current policies, showing the effort they involve and the product of that effort. The findings of Firearms Control call into question many of the attitudes and theories which have hitherto been unquestioningly accepted. Colin Greenwood here recommends radical changes both in legislative and administrative attitudes to firearms control, with a view to reducing the burden on the police there by permitting them to devote their time to methods which are likely to be productive. The book will command attention of legislators and police, sociologists, statisticians, lawyers, and laymen.
