Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Field Fortifications The above quotations set forth very clearly the legitimate role of Field Fortifications in military operations, and their appreciation, when properly employed, by the greatest soldier the world has yet produced. The "Notes on Field Fortification" was first issued in 1912, having been prepared by the Director and Instructors of The Army Field Engineer School for use in the course given the student officers of The Army School of the Line. The object is the inculcation of correct views regarding the employment of Field Fortifications by combat branches. It is in no sense a manual of military engineering or a treatise on fortification; but merely enunciates certain principles which are to be amplified in the class conferences and their application taught by terrain exercises. No solutions of map problems are issued with the "Notes," as it is not believed that the subject of Field Fortification can be satisfactorily handled except with the ground actually before the student. The original edition having been exhausted, advantage is taken of the necessity for reprint to make changes which the use of the book in the instruction of the three classes and the progress of the past two years have indicated to be desirable. Hess provides a narrative history of the use of fortifications--particularly trenches and other semi-permanent earthworks--used by Confederate and Union field armies at all major battle sites in the eastern theater of the Civil War. Hess moves beyond the technical aspects of construction to demonstrate the crucial role these earthworks played in the success or failure of field armies. A comprehensive study which draws on research and fieldwork from 300 battle sites, Field Armies and Fortifications in the Civil War is an indispensable reference for Civil War buffs and historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Army of World War II considered itself an offensive, mobile force. The experiences in the trenches in World War I had done much to shape its concept of field fortification, and its mobile warfare ethos was intended to prevent the previous war's stalemate. This book addresses frontline defensive field fortifications, built by infantrymen using local materials, and includes rifle platoon positions, trenches, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, dugouts, shelters and more. It also covers anti-tank and anti-personnel obstacles, as well as field camouflage methods and construction methods. The integration of these positions into permanent systems and theatre-specific defences are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earl J.Hess's study of armies and fortifications turns to the 1864 Overland Campaign to cover battles from the Wilderness to Cold Harbor. Drawing on meticulous research in primary sources and careful examination of battlefields at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Bermuda Hundred, and Cold Harbor, , Hess analyzes Union and Confederate movements and tactics and the new way Grant and Lee employed entrenchments in an evolving style of battle. Hess argues that Grant's relentless and pressing attacks kept the armies always within striking distance, compelling soldiers to dig in for protection.
