Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) represents a historic change in relations among Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The effect of the agreement on the three economies has generated controversy and some degree of alarm within each country. In this book, noted trade and development experts review the available literature on the effects of NAFTA on the three member countries and the world trading system. They evaluate how NAFTA will affect areas such as economic growth, employment, income distribution, industry, and agriculture in Canada, Mexico, and the United States; and consider the significance the trade agreement holds for the rest of the world. Drusill K. Brown begins the discussion by providing an overview and comparison of the general results from recent studies. Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda and Sherman Robinson explore in greater detail the potential effects of NAFTA on wages and employment in Mexico and the United States. Sidney Wintrab reviews industry-specific effects of NAFTA, in particular, the environment, the social agenda, and human rights and democracy. Finally, Carlos Alberto Primo Braga considers the implications of NAFTA on the rest of the world. Following each of these chapters, international scholars assess the alternatives and provide recommendations for future research.
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the New American Community, and Latin-American Trade by : Jerry Rosenberg
Download or read book Encyclopedia of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the New American Community, and Latin-American Trade written by Jerry Rosenberg and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1995 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the prime force behind trade throughout the Western Hemisphere, the United States is emerging with two trade projects--the newly-signed North American Free Trade Agreement and the projected New American Community. This volume provides a clear, concise guide to all aspects of the 5-volume NAFTA accord, its side agreements, and the unfolding New American Community. It covers specific issues, rationalizations, ideologies, controversies, and recommended actions. With special emphasis on the North American Free Trade Agreement, the volume will provide a major resource for both academics and decision makers in industry and government. Written by a leading authority on U.S. Latin American trade, the volume includes entries, arranged alphabetically, on NAFTA and other trade-related topics. The NAFTA entries are based on the five-volume treaty or official government and nongovernmental publications. Since the New American Community is still emerging, the non-NAFTA entries are interpolations from past trade accords and existing nationwide agreements or ideas based on global concepts and directives, especially the European Union.

Book Synopsis NAFTA to USMCA: What is Gained? by : Mary E. Burfisher
Download or read book NAFTA to USMCA: What is Gained? written by Mary E. Burfisher and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) was signed on November 30, 2018 and aims to replace and modernize the North-American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This paper uses a global, multisector, computable-general-equilibrium model to provide an analytical assessment of five key provisions in the new agreement, including tighter rules of origin in the automotive, textiles and apparel sectors, more liberalized agricultural trade, and other trade facilitation measures. The results show that together these provisions would adversely affect trade in the automotive, textiles and apparel sectors, while generating modest aggregate gains in terms of welfare, mostly driven by improved goods market access, with a negligible effect on real GDP. The welfare benefits from USMCA would be greatly enhanced with the elimination of U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico and the elimination of the Canadian and Mexican import surtaxes imposed after the U.S. tariffs were put in place.

Book Synopsis Glossary of NAFTA Terms by : Christian D. de Fouloy
Download or read book Glossary of NAFTA Terms written by Christian D. de Fouloy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final text of the proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed by the Heads of the three member states (United States, Canada and Mexico) on December 17, 1992. After ratification by the U.S. Congress, the agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. The Glossary of NAFTA Terms elucidates and clarifies a large number of commonly used acronyms, abbreviations and terms found in the trade pact, a 2,000 page document together with side agreements on environmental and labor rules. Because of the hemispheric implications of the agreement, reference is made to all trade agreements, common markets, free trade arrangements prevailing today in the Caribbean, Central America and throughout South America. The Glossary of NAFTA Terms is an indispensable reference work for diplomats, journalists, international and national civil servants, businessmen, researchers and students that take a deep interest not only in the North American region, but indeed in the future growth of the entire Western hemisphere.
