This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The science is strong, but a test is only as good as the men carrying it out," was said by Valery Legasov in the Chernobyl Mini-series. The quote resonates with me, as do the words, "Art pieces are as formidable as the quality of work, people, and resources drawn to bring them to life." Motion pictures are among the most radical art forms, and their role as sources of entertainment on both small and big screens speaks volumes. For more than a century, people have been making movies, and this trend will continue as long as people exist. In Nigeria's Nollywood, much has been accomplished, and much more is awaited. Therefore, the need to caution, educate, and take bold steps is greatly warranted. Nollywood's Path To Ascension (NPTA) aims to provide practical guidance and steps to reach the zenith.

Download or read book Nollywood written by Jonathan Haynes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English-language branch of the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, has become the third largest in the world. Nollywood films saturate Nigeria and have spread across the African continent, achieving an astonishing extent and depth of cultural influence. They are the most important modern cultural form to come out of Africa. In this book, Jonathan Haynes aims to map out the cultural terrain of Nollywood films much more comprehensively and ambitiously than has been to date. He in effect establishes a canon for Nollywood films. The book is organized around the historical development of Nollywood film culture, which is explored with close attention to the recent history of Nigeria. Throughout the book, genre (defined with reference to common usage in Nigerian film markets) is the principal framework. Thus after establishing a sense of the material and social circumstances out of which Nollywood was born and exploring a few landmark films, Haynes analyzes the durable set of themes and plot types that dominate the industry and reveal deeply embedded tensions in contemporary Nigerian life. These genres include family films and romances, village films, cultural epics, political films, films made in or about the Nigerian diaspora, and campus films. Haynes concludes by offering some remarks on the future of Nollywood, exploring the buzz around a New Nollywood of films with higher budgets fit for international film festivals and widespread screening in cinemas in Nigeria and abroad."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas and practices related to afrofuturism have existed for most of the 20th century, especially in the north American African diaspora community. After Mark Dery coined the word "afrofuturism" in 1993, Alondra Nelson as a member of an online forum, along with other participants, began to explore the initial terrain and intellectual underpinnings of the concept noting that “AfroFuturism has emerged as a term of convenience to describe analysis, criticism and cultural production that addresses the intersections between race and technology.” Afrofuturism 2.0: The Rise of Astroblackness represents a transition from previous ideas related to afrofuturism that were formed in the late 20th century around issues of the digital divide, music and literature. Afrofuturism 2.0 expands and broadens the discussion around the concept to include religion, architecture, communications, visual art, philosophy and reflects its current growth as an emerging global Pan African creative phenomenon.
Book Synopsis The Well of Ascension by : Brandon Sanderson
Download or read book The Well of Ascension written by Brandon Sanderson and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now with over 10 million copies sold, The Mistborn Series has the thrills of a heist story, the twistiness of political intrigue, and the epic scale of a landmark fantasy saga. The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Ruler -- the man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand years -- has been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protégé, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves. As Kelsier's protégé and slayer of the Lord Ruler she is now venerated by a budding new religion, a distinction that makes her intensely uncomfortable. Even more worrying, the mists have begun behaving strangely since the Lord Ruler died, and seem to harbor a strange vaporous entity that haunts her. Stopping assassins may keep Vin's Mistborn skills sharp, but it's the least of her problems. Luthadel, the largest city of the former empire, doesn't run itself, and Vin and the other members of Kelsier's crew, who lead the revolution, must learn a whole new set of practical and political skills to help. It certainly won't get easier with three armies – one of them composed of ferocious giants – now vying to conquer the city, and no sign of the Lord Ruler's hidden cache of atium, the rarest and most powerful allomantic metal. As the siege of Luthadel tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows. Book Synopsis Biblical Theology for Ethical Leadership by : Aaron Perry
Download or read book Biblical Theology for Ethical Leadership written by Aaron Perry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that ethical leadership without a theological foundation is lacking a firm foundation. It begins with a critical assessment of ethical leadership as a leadership theory, showing how ethics and theology became separated, creating the space for ethical leadership outside of theology. Nevertheless, the author argues that ethical leadership without a biblical basis is weak, though one need not be religious to embrace the leadership principles of biblical theology. Unfolding Christology, anthropology, eschatology, and contextualized leadership as four key aspects of biblical theology for ethical leadership, this book will appeal to those studying leadership, business, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Book Synopsis The Rise of Africa's Middle Class by : Henning Melber
Download or read book The Rise of Africa's Middle Class written by Henning Melber and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Africa, a burgeoning middle class has become the poster child for the 'Africa rising' narrative. Ambitious, aspirational and increasingly affluent, this group is said to embody the values and hopes of the new Africa, with international bodies ranging from the United Nations Development Programme to the World Bank regarding them as important agents of both economic development and democratic change. This narrative, however, obscures the complex and often ambiguous role that this group actually plays in African societies. Bringing together economists, political scientists, anthropologists and development experts, and spanning a variety of case studies from across the continent, this collection provides a much-needed corrective to the received wisdom within development circles, and provides a fresh perspective on social transformations in contemporary Africa.
Book Synopsis Immigrant Generations, Media Representations, and Audiences by : Omotayo O. Banjo
Download or read book Immigrant Generations, Media Representations, and Audiences written by Omotayo O. Banjo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology examines how immigrants and their US-born children use media to negotiate their American identity and how audiences engage with mediated narratives about the immigrant experience (cultural adjustments, language use, and the like). Where this work diverges from other collections and monographs is the area is its intentional focus on how both first- and second-generation Americans’ complex identities and hybrid cultures interact with mediated narratives in general, alongside the extent to which these narratives reflect their experience. In a three-part structure, the collection examines representations, “zooms in” to explore the reception of these narratives through autoethnographic essays, and concludes in a section of analysis and critique of specific media.
Download or read book Greek Whisky written by Tryfon Bampilis and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many contexts of Greek social life, Scotch whisky has coincidentally become a symbol of "Greekness," national identity, modernity, and the middle class. This ethnographic study follows the social life of Scotch in Greece through three distinct trajectories in time and space in order to investigate how the meanings of the beverage are projected, negotiated, and acquired by various different networks. By examining the mediascapes of the Greek cultural industry, the Athenian nightlife and entertainment, and the North Aegean drinking habits, the study illustrates how Scotch became associated with modernity, popular music and culture, a lavish style, and an antidomestic masculine mentality.

Download or read book Comic Book Movies written by Blair Davis and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic Book Movies explores how this genre serves as a source for modern-day myths, sometimes even incorporating ancient mythic figures like Thor and Wonder Woman’s Amazons, while engaging with the questions that haunt a post-9/11 world: How do we define heroism and morality today? How far are we willing to go when fighting terror? How can we resist a dystopian state? Film scholar Blair Davis also considers how the genre’s visual style is equally important as its weighty themes, and he details how advances in digital effects have allowed filmmakers to incorporate elements of comic book art in innovative ways. As he reveals, comic book movies have inspired just as many innovations to Hollywood’s business model, with film franchises and transmedia storytelling helping to ensure that the genre will continue its reign over popular culture for years to come.
