Book excerpt: Scott Sigler is the voice in modern horror - and NOCTURNAL will make certain that you never look at cities the same way again. For centuries, their race has lived beneath the earth, emerging only at night, to feed quietly on the dregs of society and slip back into the shadows. But now their time has come - their time to rise up from their hiding places and take back what is theirs. San Francisco homicide detective Bryan Klauser is supposed to be hunting a serial killer. But a serial killer couldn't be responsible for the seemingly impossible DNA evidence the crime-scene techs keep finding - or for the gory, strangely prophetic dreams Bryan keeps having. And what about the connections he keeps finding to a century-old cult - and his superiors' sudden reluctance to give him the answers he needs about cases that should be dead and buried? Ultimately, Klauser's investigations will reveal a race of killers who've long lurked beneath San Francisco's streets - and are preparing to take back the city. Klauser is the only man who can stop them, because . . . he might not be a man at all.

Book excerpt: From @wilderpoetry comes a heavily expanded revised edition of Nocturnal, a collection of poetry and beautifully illustrated black-and-white imagery inspired by darkened days and sleepless nights. Poetry meets presentation in each of the four sections ("Dusk," "Northern Lights," "Howl," "Lucid Dreams,"), which trace the author's continuing journey of self-discovery while illuminating a path for others along the way. Ink stains, landscapes, dreamlike animals, blackened pages, and textured spreads create a multifaceted reading experience. And true to the moniker, these poems are linked by a motif of "the wild." Celebrating the art of self-love poetry with both word and image, Nocturnal will leave readers comforted, curious, and inspired to explore the world around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned neurologist shares the true stories of people unable to get a good night’s rest in The Nocturnal Brain: Nightmares, Neuroscience, and the Secret World of Sleep, a fascinating exploration of the symptoms and syndromes behind sleep disorders. For Dr. Guy Leschziner’s patients, there is no rest for the weary in mind and body. Insomnia, narcolepsy, night terrors, apnea, and sleepwalking are just a sampling of conditions afflicting sufferers who cannot sleep—and their experiences in trying are the stuff of nightmares. Demoniac hallucinations frighten people into paralysis. Restless legs rock both the sleepless and their sleeping partners with unpredictable and uncontrollable kicking. Out-of-sync circadian rhythms confuse the natural body clock’s days and nights. Then there are the extreme cases. A woman in a state of deep sleep who gets dressed, unlocks her car, and drives for several miles before returning to bed. The man who has spent decades cleaning out kitchens while “sleep-eating.” The teenager prone to the serious, yet unfortunately nicknamed Sleeping Beauty Syndrome stuck in a cycle of excessive unconsciousness, binge eating, and uncharacteristic displays of aggression and hypersexuality while awake. With compassionate stories of his patients and their conditions, Dr. Leschziner illustrates the neuroscience behind our sleeping minds, revealing the many biological and psychological factors necessary in getting the rest that will not only maintain our physical and mental health, but improve our cognitive abilities and overall happiness.

Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago, Susan Morrow left her first husband Edward Sheffield. One day, comfortable in her home, and her second marriage, she receives, entirely out of the blue, a parcel containing the manuscript of her ex-husband's first novel. He writes asking her to read the book; she was always his best critic, he says. As Susan reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of his character Tony Hastings, a maths professor driving his family to their summer house in Maine. And as we read with her, so are we. As the Hastings' ordinary, civilised lives are disastrously, violently sent off course, Susan is plunged back into the past, forced to confront the darkness that inhabits her, and driven to name the fear that gnaws at her future and will change her life. TONY AND SUSAN is a dazzling achievement: simultaneously a riveting portrayal of the experience of reading and a page turning thriller, written in startlingly arresting prose. It is also a novel about fear and regret, revenge and aging, marriage and creativity. It is simply unique.

After surviving three or more hunting seasons, these whitetails have learned that it is only safe to venture forth when the cloak of darkness descends. They are the nocturnal bucks. But, just because you do not see them in the diurnal hours, does not mean that they are not around. In fact, all of us have probably walked past within a stone throw of a bedded or hidden nocturnal buck and not noticed him. There are probably huge nocturnal bucks where you hunt. However, you may not have seen them. Having harvested several nocturnal bucks in the last several years, I would like to share some insightful information with you. This book describes in detail where to find nocturnal bucks and how to kill them during the daylight hours. The revealed strategies and tactics will bring you within bow range of a nocturnal buck in the daytime. I have also included a few detailed accounts of the nocturnal bucks that I have arrowed down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses nocturnal cooling technologies for building applications. Exploiting the natural environment as a renewable and sustainable resource has become a significant strategy for passive energy saving in buildings, and has led to growing interest in the use of passive radiative cooling based on nighttime (nocturnal) and daytime (diurnal) operating periods. Of these, nocturnal cooling is more promising since diurnal cooling is hard to achieve due to the solar radiation effect. As such, this book provides a comprehensive overview of nocturnal cooling for building applications, including a definition, concepts and principles; materials and devices; and cooling systems and configurations.

Book excerpt: Few publications focus on the mysterious, genetically acquired disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and the related "intractable" disorders—aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. Now, however, the latest understanding of the clinical and molecular genetic aspects of PNH is summarized here in the proceedings of the International Symposium held in Tokyo in 2001. Major topics reviewed include the molecular mechanisms of the PIG-A gene mutation; complement activation and inhibitors; experimental animal models; pathogenesis; the history of PNH research; the natural history of the disease; the mechanism of PNH clone expansion; the emergence of PNH clones under bone marrow failure syndromes; and treatment of the disease by immunosuppressive agents and stem cell transplantation. This book provides an invaluable summary of current research on the fundamental aspects of PNH pathology, presented by renowned experts in the field.

Book excerpt: Although deconstruction has become a popular catchword, as an intellectual movement it has never entirely caught on within the university. For some in the academy, deconstruction, and Jacques Derrida in particular, are responsible for the demise of accountability in the study of literature. Countering these facile dismissals of Derrida and deconstruction, Herman Rapaport explores the incoherence that has plagued critical theory since the 1960s and the resulting legitimacy crisis in the humanities. Against the backdrop of a rich, informed discussion of Derrida's writings -- and how they have been misconstrued by critics and admirers alike -- The Theory Mess investigates the vicissitudes of Anglo-American criticism over the past thirty years and proposes some possibilities for reform.

Book excerpt: Nocturnal Malagasy Primates: Ecology, Physiology, and Behavior is composed of different studies investigating the "strategies adopted by lesser known nocturnal species of Marosalaza forest to cope with the contrasted seasonal conditions. In general, it defines the relationship between ecology and physiology of these species. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is comprised of five chapters detailing field studies conducted during the seven successive and overlapping field trips, from November 1973 to July 1974. This part is focused on dietary adaptations, growth and reproductive cycles, activity rhythms, social structures, and interspecific competition in five sympatric prosimian species. The second part is also comprised of five chapters, but describes the laboratory studies conducted at Brunoy in simulated climatic conditions. It centerson the relationshipsand comparisons between species of annual variations in feeding, body weight, activity, and reproduction, with supplementary investigations of social interactions, marking, and learning abilities. Altogether, the field and laboratory studies presented in this book constitute a comprehensive approach to elucidate the problem of ecophysiology.

Book excerpt: As the frequency of hemodialysis sessions has always been a concern, it is not astonishing that interest in quotidian (daily) hemodialysis appears to be growing worldwide. The main reasons for more frequent dialysis are to maximize well-being and minimize both intra- and interdialytic symptoms, as well as to improve the treatment of patients with severe underlying medical problems, particularly cardiovascular disease. Moreover, studies also indicate overall potential cost savings as compared with current conventional hemodialysis. There are two options available, namely short daily and long nightly treatments. The main difference centers on the ability of the nightly regimen to remove greater amounts of phosphate and beta-2-microglobulin. Even so, there is no doubt that both treatments are highly preferable to conventional three times weekly dialysis. Further issues which are discussed include the requirements necessary to run dialysis programs, vascular access requirements, and the management of complications and risks such as calcium and phosphorus control. This is the first publication devoted solely to daily hemodialysis therapies: Concentrating on clinical and technical issues, it is an important contribution to the practical development of daily hemodialysis and is highly recommended to nephrologists, nurses, managers of renal programs and others involved in renal care.
