Download or read book Warraparna Kaurna! written by Rob Amery and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the renaissance of the Kaurna language, the language of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains in South Australia, principally over the earliest period up until 2000, but with a summary and brief discussion of developments from 2000 until 2016. It chronicles and analyses the efforts of the Nunga community, and interested others, to reclaim and relearn a linguistic heritage on the basis of mid-nineteenth-century materials. This study is breaking new ground. In the Kaurna case, very little knowledge of the language remained within the Aboriginal community. Yet the Kaurna language has become an important marker of identity and a means by which Kaurna people can further the struggle for recognition, reconciliation and liberation. This work challenges widely held beliefs as to what is possible in language revival and questions notions about the very nature of language and its development.
Book Synopsis Coastal Landscapes of South Australia by : Robert P. Bourman
Download or read book Coastal Landscapes of South Australia written by Robert P. Bourman and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Book Synopsis Behind the Scenes by : Michael Llewellyn-Smith
Download or read book Behind the Scenes written by Michael Llewellyn-Smith and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Scenes examines planning in the City of Adelaide from 1972 until 1993 within the historical framework of City/State relations from 1836 when the Province of South Australia was founded. During this 21-year period, the City had its own planning and development control legislation separate from the rest of the State. Dr Llewellyn-Smith examines why this situation came about, why it continued for this particular period and why it ceased in 1993 when the separate legislation was repealed and the City became part of the State system under the new Development Act 1993. Behind the Scenes includes original interviews with many of the key individuals in the City and State who played influential roles during this period. Dr Llewellyn-Smith himself was the City Planner from 1974 until 1981 and then the Town Clerk/Chief Executive Officer of the Adelaide City Council from 1982 until 1993: this book, then, is both a work of scholarship and an insider's account. With a joint foreword by The Hon. Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia, and The Rt Hon. the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Stephen Yarwood.

Book Synopsis Urban Infrastructure by : K. Wellman
Download or read book Urban Infrastructure written by K. Wellman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnitude of investment, the long time-frames involved and the influence of pre-existing infrastructure on urban infrastructure provision make a co-ordinated approach to forward-planning, policy development and implementation essential. There are major challenges in making decisions on urban infrastructure and getting management structures and processes in place. Getting it right generates long-term dividends; getting it wrong involves major costs, often borne by taxpayers. Urban Infrastructure: finance and management is posited on a strong belief that the physical structure of cities and the efficiency of infrastructure services delivered are driven by efficiencies within individual infrastructure sectors, lessons learnt across these sectors and the ability to co-ordinate and integrate sectors to generate economies of scale. This necessitates an interdisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from finance, governance, planning and management as well as the characteristics of the individual urban infrastructure sectors involved. Here it is not only about getting the initial decisions and policy settings right, but also ensuring effective implementation. A major theme running through the book is the nature of institutions and the governance structures responsible for delivery and management of urban infrastructure and the decision making processes involved. The editors have taken a deliberately pragmatic approach to the finance and management of urban infrastructure; chapters are cross-sectorial and present both theory and practice. This book is for students and practitioners in policy, planning, urban management, infrastructure finance and management.
Book Synopsis Health, Social Change & Communities by : Pranee Liamputtong
Download or read book Health, Social Change & Communities written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments, while concentrating on policy development and the pursuit of strategic approaches, have concurrently distanced themselves from the direct provision of services to become funders, not providers. Funding is provided to agencies, whether from the public or private sector, on the basis of the strength of their competitive tenders and the number of relevant organizations that they have included. The effects that these and other changes in the political and economic sectors have had on Australian society at the beginning of the 21st century are the concern of the authors of Health, Social Change and Communities. Since communities are both the recipients and the participants in health and social policy, the book is a sympathetic, but critical analysis of some of those community groups, and how they are faring in terms of health and social indicators. All of the chapters focus on the four main areas: An overview of current social, cultural or epidemiological perspectives relevant to the community and their members' health. Problems or issues in Australian society as reflective of wider international concerns. A discussion of relevant health policies and programs. Measures that can be taken to improve the health of selected groups in the community. Health, Social Change and Communities is written for readers who either have an interest or who are engaged in working with members of communities. With its presentation of diversity in communities, the book provides insights to enlighten and influence thinking about health and social policy.
Book Synopsis Coastal Management in Australia by : Nick Harvey
Download or read book Coastal Management in Australia written by Nick Harvey and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coast is one of our most valuable assets but how is it being treated and what is being done to look after it? COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of this important subject. Interesting case studies are used to illustrate human impact on coastal processes as well as demonstrating the global significance of the coast and the international imperative to manage it properly. COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA introduces the background to the various coastal management systems operating in Australia and illustrates these with 'real world' examples from the different states and territories. Since this book was first published yet another parliamentary inquiry has been added to some 30 years of national inquiries into coastal management, with further calls for national co-ordination. In addition, the Australian government has focused attention on the potential risks of climate change for the Australian coast. Both authors have national and international coastal expertise; significant academic teaching experience in coastal processes and coastal management; coastal planning and policy skills; and have extensive government expertise in coastal management.
