Book Synopsis The Seabees at Gulfport by : Gina L. Nichols
Download or read book The Seabees at Gulfport written by Gina L. Nichols and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1942, the U.S. Navy established an advance base depot in Gulfport because of its uncrowded deepwater port, rail access, open land, and a tepid climate that permitted training and open port facilities year-round. The base became the southern home for the Seabees and was ideal for shipping construction materiel and men to the Caribbean or the Pacific via the Panama Canal. Since the base reopened in March 1966, Seabees have deployed from Gulfport to serve during major conflicts as well as in peacetime. Seabees from Gulfport played an integral part in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and more recently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq to assist in local construction efforts to rebuild both countries. Seabees assist thousands each year in international humanitarian projects while still calling Gulfport home.

SEABEES: NATIONAL INSTRUMENT OF POWER PROJECTION (2013) INTRODUCTION: INTRODUCTION The Seabees of the United States Navy were born in the dark days following Pearl Harbor when the task of building victory from defeat seemed almost insurmountable. The Seabees were created in answer to a crucial demand for builders who could fight. Using sailors to build shore-based facilities; however, was not a new idea. Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans did it. In more recent times, from the earliest days ofthe United States Navy, sailors who were handy with tools occasionally did minor construction chores at land bases. After the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into the war, the use of civilian labor in war zones became impractical. Under international law civilians were not permitted to resist enemy military attack. Resistance meant summary execution as guerrillas. The need for a militarized Naval Construction Force to build advance bases in the war zone was self-evident. Therefore, Rear Admiral Ben Moreell determined to activate, organize, and man Navy construction units. On 28 December 1941, he requested specific authority to carry out this decision, and on 5 January 1942, he gained authority from the Bureau of Navigation to recruit men from the construction trades for assignment to a Naval Construction Regiment composed of three Naval Construction Battalions. This is the actual beginning of the renowned Seabees, who obtained their designation from the initial letters of Construction Battalion. Admiral Moreell personally furnished them with their official motto: Construimus, Batuimus -- "We Build, We Fight."

Download or read book A TRAMP'S TOUR written by Rod Leger and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When author Rod Leger got drafted in the middle of 1966, he was in his freshman year of college. The next few years transformed his life. In this memoir, he recalls his feelings as a college student in the period leading up to the war. At the time, he never considered that the war might not be the best idea. After all, if the country was drafting young men to fight and die overseas, then it must have been right. He enlisted in the US Navy’s American Seabees, and because he completed a year of college, he was designated as a “striker” and trained as a builder. Although he spent some time in the States, he was destined to go overseas to Vietnam, where he served two tours of duty. As a member of the Seabees, he helped bring free medical care to outlying villages. The Seabees built permanent clinics, constructed roads, improved or installed infrastructure, provided clean water wells, and improved the quality of life for many Vietnamese citizens. The members of Leger’s squad also made it a personal mission to help an area orphanage. In A Tramp’s Tour, Leger shares the story of his Vietnam experience and of how the Seabees lived up to their motto: “We build for the fighters, we fight for the builders.”

This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 103 photos, maps and illustrations The following account represents one of the earliest efforts to chronicle Marine Corps operations in Iraq between 2004 and 2005. This was a significant period in the history of Operation Iraqi Freedom, seeing two battles fought over the city of Fallujah, the eruption of the Sadr revolt in an-Najaf, continuous counterinsurgency operations throughout Iraq, and initial efforts on the part of Marines to cultivate and forge alliances with the tribes of Iraq’s al-Anbar Province. Almost as soon as Saddam Hussein’s regime collapsed in 2003, it became apparent to U.S. commanders that a second deployment of Marines to Iraq would be necessary to conduct security and stability operations. This monograph recounts the first two years of this second deployment during which Marines were responsible for Iraq’s vast al-Anbar Province. This study focuses on I Marine Expeditionary Force’s deployment in 2004 and II Marine Expeditionary Force’s deployment of 2005, paying close attention to planning, counterinsurgency operations, and efforts to build civil-military relations with the Iraqi population. Particular attention is also paid to the first and second battles of Fallujah and the battle of an-Najaf.
