Nietzsche, considerably more than most philosophers, has permeated Western popular culture to the extent that his name entails specific, negative connotations even to the layman. Although, this is perhaps in part due to an unfair association with Hitler, claims that Nietzsche promotes an inherently negative philosophy are present even in academic treatments. It is among such academics that the most serious accusation against Nietzsche arises; namely that of Nietzsche being a nihilist. While accusations related to Nazism can relatively easily be refuted, other accusations are not quite as unfounded: Nietzsche encouraged strength and power; he called himself an "immoralist"; he rejected democracy and human equality; he promoted the notion of an "Ubermensch"; and he did encourage nihilism. This book has greatly influenced Modernist thinkers like Sigmund Freud , and Post-Modern thinkers like Michel Foucault. It was very popular in France in the 20th century, further establishing a Nihilistic foundation of central European society. This work, which consists of a preface and three "treatises," is one of Nietzsche's most influential writings. They are not a collection of aphorisms like most of his other works, but longer, systematic texts with a thoroughly scientific approach: he presents sociological, historical, and psychological theses attacking Protestant Theology. Unlike the classical moral philosophers, Nietzsche does not attempt to derive or justify morality, but rather to trace the historical development and psychological preconditions of certain moral values. Thus, he does not ask how people should act, but why people (individuals or groups) believe they should act in a certain way, or want others to act in a certain way. He uses a genealogical method to trace the development of moral concepts, revealing their contingent and power-laden nature. The book is divided into three essays, each exploring different aspects of morality, including the contrast between master and slave morality, the role of guilt and guilt in the formation of conscience, and the ascetic ideal. On the Genealogy of Morality, or On the Genealogy of Morals (German: Zur Genealogie der Moral), subtitled "A Polemic" (Eine Streitschrift), is a book by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed and first published in 1887 with the intention of expanding and following through on certain new doctrines sketched out in his previous book Beyond Good and Evil. The book is considered by some Nietzsche scholars to be a work of sustained brilliance and power as well as his masterpiece. It consists of a preface and three interrelated Abhandlungen ("treatises" or "essays"), which trace episodes in the evolution of moral concepts with a view to undermining "moral prejudices", and specifically the morality of Christianity and Judaism. Nietzsche's treatises outline his thoughts "on the origin of our moral prejudices", thoughts a long time in the making and already given brief and imperfect expression in his Human, All Too Human (1878). Nietzsche attributes the desire to publish his "hypotheses" on the origins of morality to reading his friend Paul Ree's book The Origin of the Moral Sensations (1877) and finding the "genealogical hypotheses" offered there unsatisfactory. Nietzsche has come to believe that "a critique of moral values" is in order, that "the value of these values themselves must be called into question". To this end he finds it necessary to provide an actual history of morality, rather than a hypothetical account in the style of Ree, whom Nietzsche refers to as an "English psychologist" (using the word "English" to designate a certain intellectual temperament rather than a nationality).
