Nach Angaben der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung wurden im Jahr 2006 373.681 Ehen in Deutschland geschlossen. „Bezogen auf die Einwohnerzahl waren das 4,5 Eheschließungen je 1.000 Einwohner. 1950 lag die Zahl der Eheschließungen noch bei knapp 750.500 – das entsprach 10,8 Eheschließungen je 1.000 Einwohner.“ Dies rührt daher, da viele Menschen nicht mehr dauerhaft in einem so festgelegten Raster wie der Ehe, mit starren Regeln leben möchten. Stattdessen werden immer öfter freie Formen des Zusammenlebens gewählt und so leben immer mehr Menschen in einer nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaft. „Die nichteheliche Lebensgemeinschaft ist ein gesellschaftliches Phänomen, das sich während der letzten beiden Jahrzehnten in den verschiedensten Formen und Ausgestaltungen immer stärker entwickelt und ausgebreitet hat.“ Jene Lebensform soll nun in der vorliegenden Hausarbeit ausführlicher behandelt werden.

Doch wer hätte gedacht, dass die nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften einen so großen Anklang finden, dass selbst die "Wissenschaftler" sich ernsthaft Gedanken machen, ob die Institution Ehe gefährdet ist. Die umfangreiche Literatur zeigt, dass es ein Thema ist, über das man diskutieren kann und vielleicht sogar auch muß. Schon der Begriff nichteheliche Lebensgemeinschaft regt zum Denken an, denn was genau versteht man darunter? Unter diesen Begriff fallen alle Formen von Lebensgemeinschaften: gleichgeschlechtliche Paare, Wohngemeinschaften, eheähnliche Gemeinschaften, getrenntlebende Paare, u.v.m. An diesen Beispielen sieht man, dass die nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften ein großes Spektrum abstecken. Dieser Text beschränkt sich auf "eheähnliche" Lebensformen. Für eheähnliche Lebensgemeinschaften gibt es verschiedene Definitionen, doch die aussagekräftigste ist die Definition von Max Wingen (1984) : "Grundsätzlich geht es um auf eine gewisse Dauer angelegte Verbindung eines verschiedengeschlechtlichen Paares, das in einer Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (Haushalt) in umfassender Lebens- und Geschlechtsgemeinschaft zusammenlebt,ohne dass die Beziehung durch eine Eheschließung offiziell bestätigt (legitimiert) ist." Auf das Ausland wird nicht gesondert eingegangen, genauso wie auf die DDR. Die nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften werden nur anhand von Deutschland behandelt. Zuerst wird die Geschichte der nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften behandelt, und zwar speziell das 18. -19. Jahrhundert und ab den 60er Jahren bis heute. Danach werden die Strukturen der nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften aufgezeigt, und die Frage behandelt, ob es sich bei den nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften um eine Form der Probeehe handelt oder um eine Alternative zur Ehe. Am Schluß werden alle Ergebnisse nochmals kurz zusammengefasst dargestellt.
