Book excerpt: Join former literature professor Sean Byron McQueen as he returns to face big questions, big tech, Big Love, and death in his final thrilling adventure. It’s the summer of 2036, and Sean’s beloved, M, has been missing for nine years and is presumed dead. M’s cruel captors have “cursed” Sean with the promise of torture and death, forcing him to live off the grid in a remote Irish tower with a robotic manservant for friendship and protection. When Sean cautiously steps out of his cloistered life, he’s met with exponentially advanced AI and the long-promised, now looming date of alien arrival—9/9/36. Sean’s best friend and renowned writer of “alien lit,” Molly Quinn, leads a CE-5 movement promoting a peaceful alien welcome in opposition to international forces preparing for war. As Sean and Molly try to prevent an imminent War of the Worlds, he grapples with his feelings toward her. Can Sean love again while there’s any chance M still lives? Will he follow his spiritual guide, Juno, into self-realization? Or will his nemesis fulfill the curse, preventing Sean from living long enough to witness the alien arrival and write the final chapter of his Big Love story? With wit and bold imagination, Juno’s Song envisions a rapidly changing world of cutting-edge technology and advanced psychic powers that challenge what it means to be authentically human.

Download or read book Juno's Daughters written by Lise Saffran and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love takes center stage when a single mother and her teenage daughters play Juno, Iris and Ceres in a summer production of The Tempest. Jenny Alexander has sought refuge from a troubled past on a tiny, verdant island, off the coast of Washington state. Surrounded by the cold water of the Puget Sound, she does her best to raise her girls, innocent Frankie, and thrill-seeking Lilly, in a tight-knit community of eccentrics and dreamers. The island bursts open each summer with the arrival of actors leading the annual Shakespeare production. A handsome thespian from New York reawakens Jenny to long-buried desires. As the intensity of rehearsals builds toward the live run of The Tempest, a potent mixture of actors, islanders and tourists, besotted by verse and swept up in the romance of the theater, spills the enchantment of the play into the lives of the players. When Jenny finds her daughters caught up in a "brave new world" of love and heartbreak, she is ultimately thrust into a command performance that will resonate in all their lives.
Download or read book The Juno Mission written by Scott Bolton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Juno mission to Jupiter is one of the most ambitious, daring and challenging solar system exploration missions ever conceived. Next to the Sun, Jupiter is the largest object in our solar system. As such, it is both a record and driver of the formation and evolution of the planets -- no other object in our solar system can tell us more about the origin of planetary systems. Understanding the details of giant planet formation, structure, composition and powerful magnetospheric environment required a new perspective close up and over the poles of Jupiter -- an orbit never before attempted. Juno was specifically designed for this challenge, entering into the harshest planetary environment known in the solar system. This volume describes the mission design, scientific strategies and instrument payload that enable Juno to peer deep into Jupiter’s atmosphere and reveal the fundamental process of the formation and early evolution of our solar system. In these papers, the Juno instrument teams describe their investigations, which include gravity radio science, microwave radiometers, magnetometers, an infrared imager auroral mapper, an ultraviolet imager and spectrograph, a visible light imager known as JunoCam, low and high energy particle detectors and plasma wave and radio electromagnetic sensors. The articles also describe a radiation monitoring experiment and the extensive laboratory measurements undertaken to assist with the analysis and interpretation of Juno’s pioneering investigation of Jupiter’s deep atmosphere. Download or read book Encyclopedia of New Year's Holidays Worldwide written by William D. Crump and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the world's myriad cultures and their associated calendars, the idea of a "New Year" is relative and hardly specifies a universal celebration or even a universal point in time. Ways of celebrating the New Year range from the observances of religious rituals and superstitions to social gatherings featuring particular foods, music, dancing, noisemaking, fireworks and drinking. This first encyclopedia devoted exclusively to the New Year includes 320 entries that give a global perspective on the New Year, beyond its traditional Western associations with Christmas. National or regional entries detail the principal traditions and customs of 130 countries, while 27 entries discuss major calendar systems in current use or of significant historical interest. The remaining entries cover a wide variety of subjects including literary works, movies, and television specials; the customs of specific ethnic groups; universal customs such as toasting and drinking; football bowl games and parades; and the New Year celebrations at the White House and the Vatican.
