Book Synopsis Seen and Heard by : Nichola D. Gutgold
Download or read book Seen and Heard written by Nichola D. Gutgold and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a messenger of television news, an anchorperson must hook the audience and make them pay attention. In America, there has been a strong tradition of male news anchors--Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings. These men, perched at their 'electronic hearths', recounted the details of America's most significant history to its citizens. Today, women are visible in every area of television news, even in the hallowed anchor chair, but their presence has been hard-fought and continues to present unique challenges. When Oprah Winfrey edorsed the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama, it reinforced the tremendous power a broadcaster can wield. Seen and Heard examines the lives, careers, and communication styles of twelve of the most compelling and recognizable women of television news, including Christiane Amanpour, Elizabeth Vargas, Diane Sawyer, Paula Zahn, Judy Woodruff, and Candy Crowley. From Barbara Walters's vast career that spans more than half a century to Katie Couric's historic appointment as the sole anchor of the CBS Evening News, this book explores the obstacles and opportunities for women in broadcasting.
Book Synopsis The Audience in the News by : Dwight DeWerth-Pallmeyer
Download or read book The Audience in the News written by Dwight DeWerth-Pallmeyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, communication scholars have taken a renewed interest in analyzing the audience and its impact on the communication process. Similarly, news editors and producers have often turned toward a marketing orientation which seeks to give new readers and viewers what they want, or at least what they say they want. Yet, there has still been little written about just how the audience factors into the news which is produced. Seeking to fill that niche, this book argues that audience images are quite important in the construction of news, but not easily detected. That is because journalists are not principally interested in their audience; they are interested in the news. USE THIS PARAGRAPH ONLY FOR GENERAL CATALOGS... This volume argues that although journalistic images of the audience may be "incomplete," they do exist and powerfully help shape the work of journalists in producing journalistic texts. Using a case study of news workers and news texts at two Chicago newsgathering organizations, the Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV, this book: * examines notions of audience and how they have been treated by academicians, * presents a detailed description of the ways in which audience is embedded within the news construction process, * presents a very representative set of journalistic news values, * presents differing ideas of audience at three key levels of the news organizations -- reporters and news gatherers, editors and producers, and senior editors, producers, and news directors, and * seeks to summarize and position this study within the larger body of mass communication research.

Book excerpt: By many measures Enda Kenny was Fine Gael's most successful leader of all time, but his position as Taoiseach was thrown into turmoil in February 2017 by an explosive political scandal – one which threatened to collapse his government, and ultimately cost Kenny his job. In Enda the Road: Nine Days That Toppled a Taoiseach, Gavan Reilly offers an enthralling blow-by-blow account of the Maurice McCabe scandal: how a Garda whistleblower was targeted by a national smear campaign, and how the government's botched response led to a fatal loss of trust in its leader. Compiled through exhaustive research and interviews with dozens of key figures and witnesses, Enda the Road is the ultimate account of a nine-day political hurricane whirlwind that brought down a Taoiseach.
